I am contemplating moving the battery which currently rides under the floor of my A coupe to the trunk so this 76 year old not as strong as I used to be can access it. Current access involves dropping so exhaust, tight work to free the hold downs and shifting the battery with one hand while lying on the floor. This would add about 5-6 feet of cable. What size do I need. The gas tank is in the trunk now-what safety precautions do I need? Finally, is the a way to attach the new cable to the ends of the existing cables which have battery clams on them> Thanks for the ideas
I'd just go with all new 1/0 ga. batt cables. Can't say enough about these guys...... https://www.batterycablesusa.com/0-gauge-1-0-awg-extreme-battery-cable-with-ends Quality product, good prices and fast shipping. Not a problem if the batt is occupying the same trunk space as your gas tank. Pick up something like this to isolate the batt from the tank....... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSTDNC2F/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I put the batt in the trunk of my '54 with a batt box and ran almost 20' of positive cable all the way to my fender mounted solenoid in the engine bay. Never a problem.
only $60 plus shipping for an 8 foot cable with both ends on it. Be sure to vent the battery box, and get a good one that actually seals.
This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is the way to go Before you call them, figure out the shortest way to route the positive battery cable from where it originally went from your battery to the new battery location without risking chafing or rubbing or exposing it to heat or the elements, that is the length of the cable you will need. They probably have plastic wire loom to fit over the cable that you can purchase by the foot. Do not count on the frame to carry the negative cable to where it originated, install proper bonding jumpers to join frame components to ensure an solid path, buy a new cable if you are in doubt. Once you have engineered your design call them and ask their advice before you place your order. Jim
