  5. Probably, but he likes to get em running first. It is a neat little car and I cant see him not wanting to spin the axle in it before he sends it down the road. He must be on a cruise livin it up.

Lol nothing to update. Block is in the machine shop getting bored, cleaned, plugs and cam bearings. Reconditioned the rods, and putting them on my @lumpy 63 pistons. I've got the cam & lifters. Bought a fresh set of 906 vortec heads. Gonna be 12.5-1 according to the sheet that came with the pistons, but it doesn't seem to account for the. 030 bore. Picked up this intake at the swap meet Saturday. $70  and i got a set of fenderwell headers for it. Should be set as far as engine/ trans goes. Had a great conversation with quick performance about the axles and rear gear. But I've got narrow the rear housing still, cut the ends for C clip eliminators, and order said eliminators lol. The car is just sitting around waiting :D

Hey with that 8.8 the thing to do is to weld 9’ ends on it because nobody makes c clip eliminators for the Explorer 8.8.

The 8.8 uses C clips to retain the axles, the 9" doesn't. The rears are completely different, although the strength is similar.

That’s why you put 9” ends on the 8.8 you can use 9” axles on the 8.8.
Usually the Explorer 8.8 has 2 7/8” removed from the long end to center the differential so the axles will be the same length. But if you put the billit 9” ends on each end you can build whatever width axle you want and get rid of the C clips.

Im lucky enough to live less than a hundred miles from Quick Performance in Ames Ia., I took them a clean axle housing sandblasted and washed with no brackets they welded the center to the tubes and welded the 9” ends on. At the time with there work the cost of the used axle assembly new axles crush sleeve eliminator and new differential clutch kit I had a complete assembly with 3.73 gears an LD differential and 31 spline axles for less than a grand. I’m thinking about getting spool and 4.10 or 4.30 gears now but I’m finding that the parts are not cost prohibitive for the 8.8.

how much you have to do to it, also depends on how fast the car is, eh? Might not need to mess with it at all?

Running a spool from QP, requires C clip eliminators. Guess I'll get vigilant on finding a 31 spline posi. 20251015_102103.jpg 20251015_102137.jpg 20251015_103237.jpg 20251015_110728.jpg

How fast or quick in the 1/4 mile before c clip eliminators are required?
I understand that axles can be broke with relatively low hp. However I do believe that normally to break an axle in heavier set up like the 8.8 is uncommon until a certain performance level is reached. Not sure what that level is.

Rear axle rules usually depends on whether you're running a normal limited slip, vs a locker or spool. You need good axles with a spool.

I'm using quick performance axles. Was gonna run their spool also, but now I've gotta dig deeper into the eliminator thing.

I swore I watched a video of a man prepping an explorer 8.8 for them. Went out and looked at my axle ends to see if they looked like his (the small shoulder that you have to retain to locate the eliminator) and mine look just like his did.

  26. Quick Performance does list eliminators for 8.8’s, but they say they are for Mustangs.

Not a gasser and kinda cheesy, but this thread reminds me of this video.
