This is the crash that ended Bill Wimble's racing career at Lebanon Valley in 1968.

He was hit so hard it stopped his watch! He owned it until his death I believe this wife gave it to one of the Northeast racing museums.

 

The car was owned by McCredy Motors (Chevrolet dealer) Sherburne NY they to towed with a 56 Cadillac Factory Limo, they ran weekly at Utica-Rome, Fonda, and Albany-Saratoga (Malta) and all the NASCAR National Modified-Sportsman races.

lots of surfers used hearses to haul their gear in the 1960s. would have been in poor taste if pit crews did the same.

 

Robert Palmer, you got any pictures of Frankie Schneider’s hearse tow vehicle?

 

I don't I know dad doesn't he never liked hearses as race car haulers because of the implication.

 

Years ago, there was an article in Stock Car Racing about Schneider, who was quoted by Dr. Dick saying that at that time you could get good used hearses for next to nothing, body in good shape, low mileage. There was room for all the tools and equipment that was needed AND room for the whole crew…

The same reason firetrucks were popular (if you could find one) for ramp trucks low miles, no rust/rot and they usually were set up for a P.T.O to run a winch.

 

It started life as a 1935 Ford Phaeton the rear door were welded shut and a padded roof was built. I an unclear if the roof lifted off Carson style or was welded to the body.
