Technical Custom wheels

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Kerry Phelps, Oct 18, 2025 at 2:53 PM.

  1. Probably been asked a million times but I'm a newby on here. Looking for suggestions for custom wheels (Cragars, etc.) that will clear the rear axle hub on a 37 Ford.

Only late model stock car wheels. Unless you can locate some vintage Safety Racing stock car wheels.

We call those “wide fives” and no company ever made street car wheels for them. But the same bolt pattern has been used in the racing industry since way back then.

Edit: I think Johnson’s Hot Rods now makes wheels for these hubs. Probably all CNC from aluminum. Contact them, but I’d bet you should be sitting down when asking the price.

I'm wondering if he still has "wide-fives" on his car, since he asked about rear axle clearance and not the weird bolt pattern. A lot have been changed to 5-5 1/2" in the las 85 years. It then becomes a different problem but opens up the choices a lot.

We need to know the real problem first.

I guess I assumed he knew what he had. But it’s very common to find out after we provide advice that the OP has something totally different.

Ha, foiled again! I guess if he never comes back, he’ll only have himself to blame.

  11. Sorry.... been away for a few days. Lou is right. Hubs and drums are 5X5.5 Was just wondering if wheels like Cragar are deep enough in the center cap area to clear the end of the axle.

I have the new production American Racing Torq Thrust Originals on my 40 with the stock rear end and it does not have any interference with the axle stubs.
I would think most center caps for aluminum slots should clear too.
