So here’s the deal, fellas... most of my living comes from the ads shown when you’re not logged in. It’s always worked fine that way: members get a clean experience, guests get peppered with ads, and everyone’s happy enough.

But the last few months have gone sideways. I won’t dive too deep into the warped moral fabric of modern America or the pearl-clutching overlords running ad networks... but apparently, we’ve been labeled as heathens.

See, some of your avatars have triggered the puritan panic brigade. A 1950s pin-up? “Indecent.” A lady in a bikini? “Satanic.” And once the bots flag you, the ad money vanishes. Since August, my revenue’s dropped nearly 70%. That’s not just a pinch... it’s a hammer to the ribs.

So, I need your help. If your avatar shows anything that could be twisted into “explicit,” please swap it out before I have to. I’ll also be trying to build a plugin that hides avatars from guests... though I’m told it’s gonna be a royal pain in the****.

I hate this. It feels gross, it feels wrong, and it makes me sick that it’s even necessary. But here we are. Thanks for understanding, and I’m sorry it’s come to this.

I will keep you all updated through this thread.

The bitter irony to this is for a week or so one of the ads I kept seeing was for a device that helped a mother when breast-feeding, you got to see everything but the "cherry on top".

I have always thought that the avatars on a traditional hot rod forum should be a traditional hotrod or custom anyhow. I am all for it.

Don’t like it but it’s a small price to pay to keep this forum in the black.
Yes I think avatars should at least be traditionally inspired.

Sorry for the****y pic of my car.

On a serious note, I tend to agree that it*****s to have to deal with. But, that pics of traditional hot rods or customs are the most appropriate for this forum anyway.

At the risk of getting flamed, is there a list of your advertisers with this "puritan" attitude? If it is a company from whom I would buy a product, I would most certainly avoid buying from that company again.

it’s a government agency recommending policy to a number of advertising platforms that we use. These platforms sell and place the ads for us.

I don’t want to get into any further than that as it would spark both political and religious debate.

Nope, don't need that. We got enough going on outside the HAMB, don't need it here.

The sad part of this is that there isn't anything in this world that doesn't upset someone somewhere.

First and foremost I want to thank you for the protection from the mind numbing infantile******** colon that is modern advertising. Personally I’d see that reduction in revenue as their attempt at making you expose the members to the tripe as well, have tried other forums but cannot stomach the bombardment of ads especially on a small screen, this is my happy place, please please keep it free from the*****

Ya know I just noticed no adds on the OT forum.
Ryan ya gotta do what ya gotta do, hope everyone who has a questionable avatar changes it PRONTO!!! 70% is crazy.
Just signed up for an Alliance Membership hope it helps.
Alright my fellow hot rod hoodlums time to cough up some coin and join the Alliance. If you’re like me you’ve been sitting on the fence for a while also like me you’ve spent the 50 on beer, cig’s, cigars, golf, junk food and who knows what.

I will say this... There isn't anything in the world that could stop me from obsessing over cars - particularly traditional hot rods. It's something I simply can't shake.

And there isn't much of anything I can think of that would stop me from hosting this joint. Someone telling me what I can and can not host is really about the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that would make me pack up my***** and leave.

On top of this avatar thing, I was actually sent a list of over 1000 words that must be censored from pages that display ads. Luckily, that's not a big deal... I can just turn on censorship for users that are not logged in, but...

This kind of thing eats at me, man. I’d love nothing more than to unload and say exactly what I think... what I know... but that wouldn’t do this place any favors. I’m not about to drag the joint down or disrespect folks who see things differently.

Just know this: I’m pissed off. And I’m sorry it’s come to this.

There is nothing wrong with being upset about something it's what people do with that upset which has become a huge problem in society.

"I'm not about to disrespect folks who see things differently." Far too many people don't follow this pretty basic tenet and think not following it is perfectly acceptable.

  25. Ryan ew know that you are doing your best. Hopefully the people that are using / displaying in-appropriate avatars, or words will get the picture. Let these people shape up, or there wont be the H.A.M.B anymore.

There’s nothing the least bit inappropriate about a 1950s pinup illustration for an avatar in my book… and the word “shit”? Hell, that’s just part of the language of living. But the folks holding the purse strings that keep the servers humming... well, let’s just say they folded out of survival and now by proxy, we’re the ones left dealing with the*********.

Point is, I don't see this as a "those****holes need to change their avatars" situation. I see it as a "I can't believe I have to ask them to change their avatars."

I'm no puritan and have dropped F-bombs and other language on the forum that I don't usually use in polite conversation.
It certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings to clean up my language if it benefited the HAMB in any way...and I'm sure most everyone would feel the same way.
I'm sure a lot of the "words" on the list aren't used by HAMBers, but I sure would like to see that list.

PS. Perhaps if more of you would become Alliance Members, maybe ad revenue wouldn't be such a big deal!!!

    Don't you*****ing dare! Seriously.

Regardless, the "profane language not consistent with the moral values of our advertisers" problem has been resolved by simply turning on censorship for users that are NOT logged in.
