My son is planning on continuing the manufacture of rebuilding kit and parts section of The Carburetor Shop when I am no longer able to handle it. But he has no interest in rebuilding carburetors, which is why we are selling cores as quickly as possible.

Do you remember the color? Mid-70's I was working on a new powerhouse near Portage and there was a slightly dented pale yellow Superbird in that area for sale for $2000. My wife absolutely refused to consider it. If I remember correctly, someone had panel painted and done some spider webbing on it.

You know I don’t remember the color for sure, weird, I think it was blue, IIRC it was mint. It was located in Dubuque Iowa.
$2000 wow, wives are funny that way, just amazing what they’re worth now.

This is great news Jon. Sad to see so many shops closing, often times because family members aren’t interested.

Face it dudes, cost is the killer of the entire picture. No? Go buy a gallon of top shelf paint and its needed components like thinner, clear (if used), compound, etc.etc. OR-run over to the nearest collision/and/or rod shop and get a price to fix or paint it. I won't mention the special tools prices if you don't have them. No more wrecking yard browsing on Saturdays, parts picking at meets (now mostly wore out junk or signs), or picking up a newspaper (remember those?) and looking for something that was listed in them. Yeah, there will always be folks that do this but they will be independent and have the funds available--common critters ain't gonna cut it! How many under 25's use this board?

I used to work at a restoration shop that specialized in early T-birds, it's kinda shocking what a bargain they are now.

It depends, if you're still with your original wife, and she's still putting up with you, she's priceless. Oh, we were talking about cars, weren't we? ;)

  9. And sadly they won't get anywhere near $55k.for it.:(

I think we’re just in adjustment stage, the hobby has been in a constant state of change forever. Like I stated above in the 70s you couldn’t hardly give away a muscle car, now you can’t hardly afford one. We or at least I don’t know what the future holds, maybe the Edsel will become the hottest thing out there Who knows?

I think is wonderful.... only real car guy will be buying at awesome prices.
This sold a month ago locally.... everything was there except the OG V8.

Remember when a bare 32 shell was going for 2K?
    Or a firewall for $1500?

Yea.. this whole sedan was asking at $8500.... and that's Canadian.... so take a 40% exchange less off the asking.

Yea.. it's a tad ruff.... but I have seen a lot worse for 3x that price.

    I welcome this.

I remember A Coupe bodies(rough) were asking 8-12K USD.... those days are gone.
Build what you love or you're gonna be ****er bait.

With people aging out and prices dropping, I was able to pick up two cars I have always wanted, in the last 3 years. Problem is I am aging out also.:p

When my wife suggested I sell some cars, I said OK. Put ads in AUTOWEEK with photos in mid-December and then pointed out that there was no interest in spite of the fact that I was advertising them in a national publication!

Woah, Hello! Small world stuff here...I'm from Dubuque, there was a nice yellow Superbird there when I was a teen, late 80's. I only ever saw it once, but all my friends knew about it. Small enough town I doubt there could have been 2!

We just went down to the big swap meet in Moultrie, Georgia yesterday, and the car corral section was the biggest we've ever seen. There were some deals, but plenty of over priced stuff too. Overall the prices were buyer friendly, I think.

    Hello,

Collector cars are not what the “normal” hot rod folks are from the beginning. It was one hot rod roadster, coupe or truck that took time and effort to get to a running, while having a fun position on the road. Cost was relative as it was pay what you can to make it run. Then pay more to make it run faster. It has always been like that throughout history.

Forget the collector who hoards tons of cool cars, just because he has the funds to do so. The prices they pay at auctions is not normal. You can only drive one hot rod on the street at a time. So, why hoard? It does not show why a $25k hot rod got sold for $40k and everyone is smiling… It is a shame that there are folks who do that just because. Then there are others who are the core of hot rodding and custom car building and cruising. One car, one build, etc.

My wife and I are strange to some or most people. We have always had one car as a daily driver for each of us. Even if we had tons of money, we can only drive one car or hot rod at a time. As our daily drivers, one was an El Camino for work and play. The other was a 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery also used as a daily driver. So, no room to hoard and no money to pay for that hoard. Whatever fit in the small two car garage… as a matter of fact, that is the epitome of house owning. A small garage for two cars and less area to keep clean… Ha!

But, on the other hand, if we lived in a larger house with plenty of garage space for 5 cars, my wife would like space for three of her choices, including a large truck, a sporty car and daily driver AWD wagon. I have no inclination other than a small station wagon and 34 Ford Roadster with an SBC motor. That is not hoarding, it gives us a different car to use for daily driving and weather conditions. YRMV

    Note:

If the collector car group, not normal hot rod folks, still attends and buys those over priced builds, then that is their prerogative. But, they keep the prices high until it starts to level out. When it does, that allows them to buy more with the hoarding idea behind each one.

Makes sense. I'm in education as well. Working with young people makes you realize how far distanced today's kids are from old Fords.

I was told once that if you didn't like the gauge cluster it didn't matter how nice the rest of the car looked you wouldn't enjoy driving it. You spend a lot of time looking at the dash in front of you.

If a guy is not set on having a “trendy” body style car then you have always been able to have fun with old cars reasonably cheap. All depends why you are doing it.

I just got these, both show cars and the prices were low enough that I could afford them.

There are a lot of project cars available in my neck of the woods, very few are desirable and if the are they are still pricey, I may build another car but I'm not thinking about any more ground up builds, maybe some ones stalled project or something that need freshing up. HRP
