    Putting together the steering shaft for my '27 T roadster. I have a shaft about 26" long. One end has a quick release steering wheel hub. The other end has the 5/8"x 36 spline u-joint for the reversed Corvair steering box. The shaft is 3/4" x 1/8" wall DOM tubing. The u-joint and the QR hub are weld on. The shaft also has a 3/4" Heim for support near the steering wheel in the middle of the shaft.
    I don't really want to trap the Heim between two welded ends, mostly for installation reasons. I am contemplating drilling the QR end of the shaft and using a roll pin to attach the QR hub. Would this be safe enough? Maybe even use two roll pins spaced about 2" and 90 degrees a part? Roll pin size?
    Is this an acceptable practice?

    @jaw22w
    Post pic of the Q-R , pieces
    I do some unique things but I do not think I would use a roll pen
    Maybe be soild & 5/16
    Or Two 1/4 clocked 90 deg & @ least 1/2 down from each other ?
    More the tighter fit the better , less shear chance .
    I would make all press fit ,
    Lathe ?
    I have used thiner chromoly
    Machined stem to slide down in like 1 inch , & plug weld with Tig

    You could swap the tube shaft for solid (or attach a slug of solid). The u/j end could be machined to double d to fit a dd joint. Or shaft with spline? Either way a new or modified shaft and u/j required.

    Edit. Are split-able bearings available to replace the heim? Hmm. Yes they are, but priced at equivalent to many u/j's!!!!!!!

    Back when I was building and selling early Ford columns for the 39 & 40 wheels. I bought 36 inch shafts from either Ididit or Flaming River that had a 3/4 36 spline on one end and we would cut them to our length and machine the cut end to the Ford keyed & tapered end. Worked great. I think I sold my last shaft recently.

    The 1/8" wall tubing is "questionable"!!!

    Vega boxes also have 5/8-36 spline. So do Azusa go karts. Azusa sells solid 5/8 shaft with a 36 spline on one end in lengths from 6" to 34" https://azusaparts.com/product/steering-shaft-splined-58-od-with-snap-ring-34-length/ . Driveshaft parts has 5/8-36 x 5/8-36 u-joints https://www.driveshaftparts.com/ST015 . Cut the welded-on joint off, stub the end with 5/8-36, use a u-joint that comes off, slide the bearing over before you put on the u-joint. The Azusa shaft is for a steering wheel hub, it has a threaded end and snap ring groove. You can loose the threaded end. It is the most economical 5/8-36 splined shaft I could find. Mike
