  1. Did any make an adapter to bolt an early SBC to a ‘37 LaSalle? Thanks!

I’ve never seen one, but you could use a SBC to flathead trans pattern, then a flathead to LaSalle bell.

  4. Well, Offenhauser 5169 (331 to LaSalle) just sold on the eBay. Will set an alarm for #3705

    Thanks!

    Hello,

When my brother and I built our 1940 Willys Coupe for the B/Gas cl***, we started with an 283 SBC motor. We also got a 37 LaSalle transmission, as they were very popular and parts were close by at any shop or s**** yard. Our friend in his 34 Ford Coupe with a big Oldsmobile motor, also had a 37 LaSalle transmission. He knew every place to get parts when needed. So, that was the transmission for us.

But, despite our 283 having an Isky cam, we turned to Howard Cam Company for their aluminum transmission adapter for the SBC to LaSalle connection.
upload_2025-11-25_3-12-19.png A year later, the parts list for sale was placed in the Drag News weekly. It got instant action and all parts were gone by three weeks. The motor was sold to a racer who flew in from the Midwest to purchase and ship it home. Despite the bad typing from the secretary who took the information I gave her. the motor for sale was a 292, not 283... 40 Willys running motor and running gear not 49...etc.

All of the parts for the 283 were the top name brands. When we switched to a rebuild and moved up to a 292 c.i. block, now, all of the parts came from Reath Automotive and they ordered the blower spec parts for the new build. They did the motor bore, crankshaft machining and balancing. Then we had the huge puzzle to ***emble the rest of the complete motor in our backyard garage.

We were able to use the same heavy duty clutch from the top build shop in Long Beach. But, everything else was able to be bolted on during the new build.

Our cash flow was now empty and we decided to use the 6 Strombergs on top for now. At the end of the summer season, we had ordered a new two port Hilborn Injector, a B&M stick hydro, Halibrand Mags and a larger set of M&H slicks. We were getting ready for the Nationals in Detroit on Labor Day. YRMV

    Note:
All orders had to be cancelled and sent back...in late August 1960.
