I have a picture somewhere from when I visited the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (at least if that was the original car). But, as mentioned, I have never necessarily been a huge fan of the car other than the fact that it was somewhat influential to a big group at the time. When it was popular, I was a muscle car guy... I am also not the proudest of some of the 80's and 90's styles on those that I did to my own cars as I look back...

I remember seeing that car when it first came out. I always wondered why people went ga-ga over it. Other than it was owned be someone famous it was really a basic Ford coupe. A nice car with a chrome front axle and nice detail, but the same car most guys could build.

Never said they weren't talented...just preferred bands (Allmans, Skynyrd etc.) that relied entirely on their music alone WITHOUT gimmicks...(ie, hot cars, hot chick vids, fuzzy instruments etc.)

@hotrodjack33 That was for a music video. Kind of the point. They leaned into the flash on a few tours, but also did a lot where it's just 3 guys on a stage.
If you hold the Allman Brothers to that music only standard, well I've got bad news.
Who is that playing in the pics?

I get it, certain things just rub us wrong at times. But try to look at the group's entire legacy and catalog.

You kind of made my point for me. All the bands in your link http://brotherhoodoflightshow.com/ made it on their music alone and didn't depend on flashy MTV videos to become legendary.

Fwiw, ZZ Top had already 'made it ' way prior to the fuzzy guitar era. MTV hit and they got in the game, causing a resurgence in their popularity, due to some pretty damn good tunes to go along with the fuzzy guitar shtick. Totally tongue in cheek on their part. Wasn't my favorite period either, I'd already been baptized by Tres Hombes, etc....

Saw them at least 3 times in the 80's and they brought the house down every time! The furry guitars were a obviously a gimmick, but when they played them, the place went ape ****.
They had musical and marketing talent and toured thier ***es off.

Top had already earned their street cred, when they went uptown with Eliminator. From the first album, then Rio Grande Mud, Fandango, Tejas, Deguello and El Loco. Rev Billy, Dusty , and Frank will always be rock icons! Hand me another one of them brews from my carrier, boy…drive that ol Chrysler to Mexico! IMG_3928.jpeg

Not sure if this was the real deal, or one of the "official" copies [ I understand there were at least two; one of which was wrecked ] (guessing the latter, since it wasn't roped off). Raceway Park, "near" Englishtown N.J. Probably about '85 or so. Old Time Drags.

Lol, well there was no MTV or I guarantee all those bands would have been on there, had videos.

And there's not a group on here that 'made it on music alone', flashy stage show or erratic stage behavior was part if it for every one of um. How'd Hendrix dress? Zep? Jimmy was strutting around with a dragon on his outfit and lasers shooting everywhere, lol. And they're probably my favorite band. And forget about the Doors, Morrison pushed it further than pretty much anyone else, and not the music. His whole thing was to make a spectacle, a la Oct 20th 1967 at U of M.

They all had light shows and effects at their shows. MAYBE I'll give ya the Allman's being just regular guys on stage, even though they had effects and light shows, etc. They were definitely the most normal dressed guys on the list. Especially ****ey.

Man as a guitarist I can tell ya, the flash is part of the show, and the audience wants to see a show.....don't let two fuzzy guitars in a music video keep ya from some great music! ZZ Top is awesome, and according to Jimi Hendrix himself who said "Billy Gibbons is one of America's best young guitarists, and a "technical wizard"...

I don't have a picture of the ZZ car but the key chain in my 34 roadster is the same one I used 40 years ago when I built my 36 5 window.

Definitely one of the most influential, bands that continued to show that simply a b*** guitar a lead guitar and a drummer that knew what the right beat was, and most ***uredly never to follow trends, but to be original!
These great musicians always kicked ***, ask any Mexican Blackbird!
