    a little more progress-

I woke up this morning and decided it was time to chop the windshield! No real reason, but the stock height has been throwing me off for proportions, like a missing piece when looking at the car.

Started with the frame. This frame already had some damage up top and cracks around the pivot bolts. If i cut the damage clean off it would be a 3" chop.

I had planned on starting with 2", but what the hell straight to 3":
measure, mitre cut, new pivot bolt hole.

I cut mine 2 1/2" Then I laid it back, that makes a huge difference in looks. The main reason I brought it up is because if you are going to lay it back more, figure it out before you cut your stanchions. If you cut the top of the stanchion off at the round part you can rotate it up so the top iron will slip down straight. IMG_0997.JPG

Next reshaping the stanchions, when i took them off i noticed one of them was significantly heavier and thicker. Both have the same wear and age to them as they appear.

Good info on the angle, im not planning on having a top but they can always be changed again.

I went with 3 because of the damage to the frame already. The bottom of the frame is completely rotted out someday itll need to be replaced.

Wow! That's the kind of detail that really makes a project shine! That's well beyond my sheetmetal working skills, but makes me want to keep pushing myself!

Im still on the debate for what to do with my fan. Almost $600 plus core parts for EJ Whitney to rebuild my gen seems crazy.
Joey Ukrop (I cant figure out how to tag) Mentioned another company Millworks who does conversions for $300 plus core and possible additional costs after they inspect your gen.

    Questions-

On the pre 38 gens that had fans mounted, what end had a timkin bearing that people have talked about. Looking up references i havnt seen a tinkin bearing so must be in the front cover plate? Most pictures show a ballbearing front and a bushing rear.

Powergens seems to have a good rep besides the fan deal. It cant be that hard to figure out how to put a timkin in it. Im willing to try if i can get enough info together.

Why not just have your generator rebuilt and converted to 12 volts? I just had one done here in GA for less than $200

That is what I’m trying to do. Can you give me the contact info for the shop who did it? Thanks!

either way would still need to get an earlier code then what I have or modify the ones I have to take a Timkin.

'39 Standard is the 2 brush generator with the fan mount you need. I have found a few for around a $100 or so on Ebay for my '32 Sedan.

I misread your message, but I’m not opposed to keeping it generator, either.

Not much physical progress on the car with the holidays coming and going but I have been trying to find the elusive generator needed.

I pieced IMG_4928.jpeg IMG_4927.jpeg IMG_4925.jpeg IMG_4926.jpeg IMG_4929.jpeg together some parts as well as a complete gen I saw for sale and I still don’t know if it’s quite right but it’s a 2 brush with a keyed shaft..

I got this Nos pulley in an auction, 4.375 OD, straight find, keyed which I believe is correct for the 39 standard gen.

I pulled apart the gen to look at the bearing and it’s not Timkin as I have read people exclaim but it is a larger bearing then the 40-up gen’s I have as reference.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct or it is supposed to be a Timkin bearing on front ..?

Everything I got goes together. It’s a little funky there was a home made spacer on the armature, ***embled I can pull the shaft in and out about .125” that needs to be fixed.

If I tighten the large nut that holds the pulley in place, the pulley fins make contact with the front plate. Not sure if I’m missing some shims that are supposed to be there or these parts all don’t go together exactly.

I don’t have much money into it all, but I hope I got something right so I don’t have to continue to scour for one.

That’s a 6V generator? Yes you will need to mess with the spacers between the pulley and bearing to get the correct clearance.

Timkin is a brand, but there are other good brands. Just make sure you get a high strength and precision bearing. Hopefully someone here can tell us the correct suffix for the part number. What’s the size number of the one in there now?

It should be a 6303, here is a picture of my front mount. If your thinking timken as in tapered roller no the ball bearing is correct IMG_0864 (1).JPG

Yes, when I read Timkin I go straight to tapered roller bearing so my mistake just referring it to only as “Timkin”.

thanks for the photo to confirm!

The end plate has an oil lite bushing and takes drops of oil thru the oil cap on top, no grease in there to get on the armature and brushes.

Hey thank you! Glad you found me here too. First time building my own hotrod, not working on someone else's so very excited about that. I will probably share some of the build on instagram too but doing a thorough thread here to promote myself and put myself out there for hire.
