I have just recently removed my transmission while the engine gets rebuilt. I think the transmission has been rebuilt, but seeps fluid around the shift forks (slightly) so I’m replacing those seals. The u-joint has some up/down play as shown in the video, is this normal? How much grease is used after ***embling the clam shells? I take it there is no one piece seal on the rear of the transmission, correct?
The X on the joint is supposed to slide in its bushings. It’s not supposed to rock. Make sure you understand what you have happening. Pack as much grease as you can around the X before you ***emble the inner cone or the outer shell. Lots of guys use John Deere corn head grease here. No seal on the back of the transmission, but some guys will now use a sealed bearing at the output shaft.
I take the speedometer turtle off, then pump grease in the clam shell zerk until I see it filling the speedo drive area.
There Is a sealed bearing type u joint You can buy nowadays and use that with the sealed rear bearing and no grease is needed
I filled the clamshell with John Deere grease until I saw the grease ooze out of the speedometer turtle opening. Then I knew it was full. Also used the newer clam shell seal with the 0-Ring. Lots more info in this thread: Clam shell help - The Ford Barn
There are clips that hold the bushings into the two large halves of the joint, but the center X is still supposed to slide loosely in the middle. It’s different than any other joint I have seen. A photo would help us confirm what you have.
