Finally after all of these years I've got the front end painted and ***embling it together but now I have a problem... I've built everything, so I've had things apart and together numerous times so while mocking everything I've never installed the king pin shims, left them in the kingpin box all by themselves in a plastic baggy. Well a couple yrs ago my wife thought it would be nice to rearrange my parts I had in a closet. She opens the box and finds nothing but a rolled up baggy and throws it away, fast forward and now I don't have the shims to fit the king pins. Napa has numerous listing for them so no problem right? Wrong, there are no dimensions listed, called my guy at Napa and had him check, no dimensions for him either. Said he hasn't ordered any in the 8 yrs he's been there and don't know how to find out except call each vendor and ask directly. So has anyone ordered Napa shims and happen to have a part number? I thought this was going to be the weekend I finally got the front-end together, guess not ...
This says 28-48. Other places mention .005" thick. I didn't see one with all dimensions. https://www.roadstersupply.com/King-Pin-Shims-p/ahr-60715.htm Helpful drawing? https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/32-34-king-pin-installation-drawing.1128363/ Rock auto has full kit listed for 1948 as MOOG 8350B with OEM / Interchange Numbers: 21A3111B it also does not have individual part size or number. That # on the Moog site does not go back past 46 but is 50s trucks too. I looked for a 28 and a 32 and Moog only lists BMW back then!?!!!
@CSPIDY super bell axle, standard .812 ford kingpin. @RodStRace I've found some online, was hoping someone had a Napa number, this way I could order Friday morning and hopefully have them Saturday afternoon. Everything I've ordered in the past 3 weeks has been at least 5 days past delivery date due to Christmas shipping. Really didn't want to wait 2 weeks or more to get them. Might not have a choice... Just for giggles I ordered a piece with 2 day shipping Sunday, they are still waiting for usps to pick up packages this week, I should have had it tomorrow. Won't happen... ....
@BJR haha !! Damn right !! There went her diamond tennis bracelet !! Now she's getting a McDonald's happy meal gift card !! ...
Well., I tried! Such is life in the computer age. I bet the old books called out each part in the kit. Of course, back then it was mail your check and wait by the mail box 6-8 weeks. P&J didn't have part #s or specs either. Did have this https://www.peteandjakes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Front-end-instruction-blow-up.pdf
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/King-Pin-Shims-for-Ford-Spindles,7029.html Each shim measures .005" thick, 1.556" O.D. and .882" I.D. I checked NAPA and (as you know) they don't provide any specs on most single shims, one had the .005" thickness.
I would look around your neighborhood for a guy that has restored a few Fords. He probably has some in his junk drawer.
Since the shims on '37 up axles don't bear any weight and only take up any excess space between the top of the axle and the top ear on spindle; the type of material is not critical. You could make your own as needed. Br*** shim stock or other thin sheet metal you may have around would suffice.
@lostone One with a Napa # Sorry just so many parts $150 , I think I payed $60 also McMasters ect. shims or Torsion bearings with washers ?
I’ve got a set of Moog’s for ‘42-‘48 Ford, p/n 8350B, they came with .005 and .010 shims. I bought them decades ago, the box is marked $9.15!
I'm not home, but I had a plastic bag of shims, I bought from parts house. Think there was a part number on the bag, (Moog?) . From 35 years ago, so maybe still not available. I'll check this thread, when I get back home, and post, if not already found.
This is from the NAPA E-Rack site, it's all the catalogs they have and have had. https://www.napaecatalog.com/Ch***is-Applications-1995-and-Prior/951/ The next page list the sets, not sure they carry them anymore, but it might help narrow down your search. Don't use the dash when looking up parts at NAPA online.
@19Eddy30 thank you for the numbers, I was looking for that number awhile back for another friend of mine. @Algoma56 please if you find them would you post the numbers, just incase someone else comes across this thread !! @Joe H thank you !! That was exactly what I was looking for ! Happy to report I found the numbers I needed along with the dimensions and I went to napa this morning and the numbers are good and ordered AND I should have them the first of next week. Thank you again. The numbers for these is 262-7002 and DTN-303-110. These are a 20 pack of .005 shims. Thanks to all of you that answered, I appreciate the help and leads that you've given !! ...
Glad to hear. This site has other interchange numbers. I have no idea who they are or if they are valid. But if NAPA doesn't work for you, these might help. https://www.traction.com/en/p/king-bolt-shim-mogrs505 540-1000 262-7002 303120 45F2000 E4567 KP2367 SP627002
I don't restore old Fords, I hot rod old Fords; but part about having shims in a drawer is true. Don't mean to be a spoil sport; but I believe those NAPA shims are for big trucks.
