63 Gal with the T-Bird roof was the first new car my Dad ever bought ! He let me drive going home.... Mor-Door with a romp'in-stomp'in 260 with the Cruise-O-Matic ******. First thing he did was put a set of those Fingerhut clear plastic seat covers on it. (you know...the ones with the 'waffle-texture') Made a few of my old girlfriends look like they had leprosy on their backsides !!! (jus say'in !!) NO AC !!! Not many folks did in the 60's ! I can say....they were RUGGED !!! 6sally6
It's not, but lately, everyone is posting in here to be safe. Feel free to move it wherever you want to.
If you mean a 289 with a slushbox, sure. The ones with the "right" options, not so much anymore. To me the one which goes under the radar is the Mercury cousin, the Marauder. This is Steve Dauria's car which to me is perfect. It's exactly the type of car I'd have had if I were in the US but here in backwoods Austria it's just too wide...
There's probably some truth to that. But, as I stated earlier, I am not a numbers matching guy. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to buy a small block car and build a 445 for it. I don't do restorations, I build hot rods. Now, if it were a super rare car, I get doing a restoration....
The 1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight was a factory-built drag racer designed for the NHRA Super Stock cl***, featuring a 427 cubic-inch "top oiler" V8 with dual 4-barrel carburetors, producing a heavily underrated 425 horsepower. Only 212 examples were produced, boasting significant weight savings via fibergl*** and aluminum panels, plus stripped interiors to achieve 12-second quarter-mile times. Googled this for you, Thinking you will have to break the piggy bank if you can find one to purchase. Kool car, I have seen one 63 1/2 , and a 64 Ford Thunder Bolt on the street at local cruises in Milwaukee suburbs cruises back in the day when I lived there. There would be some outrageous cars showing up, Ground Pounders, goosebumps and make your hair stand up. "top oiler" typo should be "side oiler " So.......... Google and the net is not perfect ? Say it's not so. LOL
I came somewhat close to buying a 63 convertible not long ago but ended up p***ing it on to a fellow HAMBer. He is working on it now.
I am really only interested in the fastbacks. I am sure it had a lot to do with the one that got away.
No argument on that, I forgot you can still reasonably find project cars at reasonable money in the US, particularly once you get below the rust belt. I follow a couple of YT guys who go to auctions in "your" area and the stuff that keeps popping up in small country auctions where the buyers are more into tractors and just old stuff amazes me. But I don't know that the big Fords/Mercurys are cheaper than any other big coupe of that era, people just want pony cars and muscle cars for some strange reason
I too have always had a soft spot for 64 Galaxies. My first car was a slightly used Turquoise and White fastback with a 352 3 speed. Loved that car. Kept it until 73 when gas got pricey, although I had several 64s over the years.
Here in Oklahoma, Ford has dominated sales forever. Stuff doesn’t rust away like a lot of other places. We get about 3 weeks of bad weather in the winter. For example. It’s supposed to be 93 here by the end of the week. The Galaxies were popular family cars, so they are pretty plentiful. I just have way too many cars 90% of the time. I wish I was one of those guys that could be a specific car only guy. I know guys that only do 32 Fords. Me not so much….I think I have 7 right now.
I like the big Fords! Back in 1965 my father went to the Ford dealer in Checotah, Oklahoma to look at new cars! They had a white 1965 Ford Galaxie XL with blue interior, low mileage , used! They let my father take it home for a trial , I was 14 and couldn’t drive it on the highway, so my older sister and I drove it that night to get a Coke in Checotah! That was it! I fell in love with that car and begged my Dad to buy it! Well, him being him, waited a few months and bought a four door 66 Galaxie! Two completely different cars! Being a gear head at 14, I researched that 1965 Galaxie and learned most of the enivations it had! NASCAR was big then and everyone said that ‘65 Galaxie wouldn’t compete , due its box like shape! Fred Lorenze proved them wrong at the 1965 Daytona 500, by winning it! Now , I’ve got wood! But , I got bit by the “ horse “ car, I can’t mention here and bought one of those, life happened, but I always had my eye open for a 1965 Gakaxie500XL! After I retired I looked harder, but could never find the right combo of price and condition! So one day while traveling I bought a 1965 Country Sedan. Love this car! Two months later my BIL calls and askes if I’m still looking for a 65? Well, yes, he found my avatar car 20 mikes from my home town at a bargin! Well, now I have two driving ‘65s, plus three parts cars, plus my Dad’s old 66! Bones
This was my 61 Starliner about 2 months before I went in the Army in 1970. I had it painted at Earl Scheib in August of 1970. I still have the receipt, $31 and some change. I bought some touch up paint. They were having a $29.99 paint special. The car was red and I had enough for the special. When I got there they said red was $49.99. The special was for white, black, and a shade each of green and blue. I told them to paint it black. 390 with a 4 speed.
