Folks Of Interest How Can I get Young Guys into Hot Rods

You may be surprised how many "greybeards" will GIVE you hotrod parts if you show some interest and APPRECIATION. Definitely dont expect freebies.

I still have boxes of free parts I got for my 64 from 35 years ago.

The best way for you to get younger guys and girls into old HotRods is to start today building them. Get your friends involved, you might have one who is better at welding or paint and bodywork or fabrication or maybe just want to hang out and lend a hand. Knowing older guys in the hobby is a great plus for starting out because car guys are always full of opinions some good and others not so good but if you listen and do your research you can figure it out. Just reading your posts it looks like you have what it takes to get started and build the rod you want.

Oh man does anyone have a link to the 999 or 777 special Clark built a zillion years ago? I think he used an 80’s ranger for almost all the parts. Off topic for modern day hamb but would be a good example of using a rwd donor car for every little bit

THIS! When my two boys were working on old cars before they were 16, I can't count the number of free parts that my car buddies gave them. I have also done the same for some young guys trying to get started. And, I now have some older guys than me giving me stuff since they need rid of it and want to see it get used. The whole hot rod community is as about as good of folks as you can find.

 

I have gotten free parts from people that I know.

 

@EzraB do you know how to MIG weld? It's a skill you'll need to build what you're envisioning.

If not, buy (used on FB Marketplace or Craigslist) or borrow a name brand one, watch some YouTube videos, and practice welding s****s together.

If you can already weld, then offer to help others with projects. Networking will open doors for free/low cost parts for you *and* convince other young guys to join you.

Know anybody 's mom or girlfriend with a sewing machine? Any elderly neighbors with an air compressor? See where I'm doing with this post?

Im on the East coast! Orlando FL , turned 18 this February, only reason i dont got a project is still lookin for a job lmao but some day soon i'll bust out the pre war custom i got invisioned in my head. Kurtis, DuVall, Jimmy Summers, Westergard, the pioneers. Theres another hand full of guys our age i talk too (15-19) that are into and are interested in rods and customs too

 

Good to see someone your age taking up the hobby. Nice also that your father is there to help and guide you. Starting a club is a good idea. Get out there and network. There are lots of folks sitting on parts they’ll never use. Lots of stuff is being s****ped unfortunately, so there is an opportunity to do some horse trading.
I used to watch this guy. He was/is amazing, but then he hit 18 and went off to university. So, keep that in mind.

yea 30-31 Model A but instead of fenderless going the fenders, tail dragged and skirted route. So far got the shift knob, a pint of paint and pearl, gas ration windsheild sticker anddd thats about it for now.

Just think about it you could go to a column shift. I don't know if that's what you want to do.

 

Possibly, mines just one of those heavy *** Gemstone/diamond door knobs from the 20s-30s so I'll have to see if it wouldn't sag the shifter too much.heres a pic for reference. If i where to do a column shift definitely a FoMoCo 39-41

How much does it cost for a Model A sedan or a Model T Coupe or a roadster

 

I think it got named the 999 special because they were trying to spend less than a thousand dollars.

The ch***is and running gear for any of the cars your talking about are going to be basically the same so your cost is going to come in the body. If I was trying to get cheap I would not bother with an A, a t coupe is cool but for a decent one it’s still money, I would build a T roadster.

you can find gl*** ones for reeaaaaallll cheap after someone’s had it sit in the garage for ten years and realized it’s not gonna build itself. And you can find real/metal t roadsters for less than it will take you to fill the trucks gas tank these days.

And a lot of the T’s have the same sub rails weather it’s a roadster pickup or a roadster with a turtle deck. Lucky from luckys speed shop is piecing a little t roadster together and has posted a few things on IG of him using some late 40’s gm fender pods ( the part of the front fender that is on the door) to make a bun panel on an other wise flat/square touring front half.

very reasonable to get into and really you could start with a trash body and find a better one to swap on if you wanted to.

Keeping the cost down and the fun up is gonna keep the ball rolling when they realize just how much goes into a from the ground up big kid go cart.

 

Honestly having the guys build scratch built go carts with wheel barrows turned into little t buckets might be a cheaper/ faster test of do they want to commit to this.

 

the Model A coupes im looking at range from 10-15k ish? Mainly its around the same for Sedans but im looking at bone stock driver quality ones

A sbf can cost you whatever you want to spend on it, if you can find a good mid eighties or newer 5.0 you might be able to get by with rings and bearings and maybe a valve job timing chain and gaskets and have a couple hundred + horsepower, back in 2012 I dropped ten grand on a 289 and made 455 hp because I wanted a 289 but I could have bought a 500hp 363 for the same money.from Ford. The Ford small block with aluminum heads intake and header's weight is only a little over 400 lbs, 425 with iron heads. If you are willing to learn how to port heads , with minor headwork you can make 300-325 hp or more depending on how far you want to go. There’s books on building the small block Ford out there sometimes you see them on EBay.

 

This popped up recently. I’ve been looking for a “project” hot rod for yrs. Prices are of course crazy for the most part, but then there are a few like this that come along. I honestly think though, it’s better to buy a good older restored driver condition, but the thought of “hot rodding” it just doesn’t sit right with me. Price is CAN$.
