-Waitasec- Denver has kick*** Mexican food! Give Monterrey House a try in Lakewood. I still love Chubbie's off of 38th st.
Dang Ryan, with very little modification that reads like you wrote it about me from looking over my shoulder all my life. I still have 2 cars I've had since High School. Both living in pieces and on Jack Stands well on their way to---. 3 projects so close yet can't get past the something next issue. I've totally relocated twice and they followed. Sold a few that I didn't mind. Sold one with full regrets that came back after M.I.A. 20 years. M***ive mistake (selling it part) it's still here in desperate need. I was lucky to run a business doing what I love and built many grate dreams for my Customers. I believe every one of them became a long-term friend. In the meantime, my personal projects got worked on hit-n-miss. All my resources have moved on or retired. The cost of Paint jobs and Chrome has moved into the range of you gotta be kidding me. 3 years back I decided to purge and downsize to one or two projects. That hasn't happened because what ones do I sell or keep. They all are like Family, and they are all the family I have. That's okay, I like sitting with them. They don't cost much to keep. They don't ask for anything. Just having them makes my days good enough. Retirement hasn't been anything like I thought it would be, so I try not to act retired. I'm actually just fine and I earned where I'm at. There will come a day it all goes up for auction, and I won't be there to watch any of it get trailered to a new address.
Often I considered how some of us have a bond with a transportation device. Certainly illogical to many people. I have owned my Dodge panel for 52 years and have no plan to sell it. I asked my son recently what he would do with all my cars when I p*** on and he said he would sell the panel. My heart kind of sank. None of mine are non-running projects. I have seen many nice cars end up on jack stands for umpteen years. A good friend of mine recently died with projects waiting, all the tools and knowledge to do them. I wonder how much will be sold for a song and the rest s****ped. So I am in the camp of keeping that ride full of memories. Do one thing every day to get it functional. Dead project cars bring a lot less money than a runner. Life is too short to live with regrets.
I can some what relate to feeling that feeling about letting go. Bought and built my 36 Ford in '93, after moving from SW Chicago to Colorado, it just sat in the garage next to the '36 Chevy. Sold the Ford to a fella in San Jose who sold it to another fella in Morgan Hill, Ca. and never felt remorse. I see it sometimes on line and have talked to him on the phone so all is good. I've owned my Chevy for over 46 years now so that one is NEVER going anywhere till my Son gets it when Im ready... What ever happens to your '38, it'll always be my favorite Ford coupe. Also,,, WELCOME to Colorado, whenever that happens. Mitch
even aaron decided to let go of the space truck, what is this world coming to? you guys know something i don't
In my opinion you should of left it alone, you can't feel and appreciate tradional, if all you know is tradional. That car wasn't a tradional build but was a great car for what it was built for, you don't ask things of it that it's not capable of delivering. I have 3 old cars on the road, each built in it's own style, one has uncontrollable horsepower but happens to ride the best, another also has plenty of juice under the hood and pulls the wheels effortlessly at the track but is harsh and brash out on the street, the other also has more power than needed, 4 wheel drum brakes and buggy springs. All do what they are built to do, but they also give a great sensation to their individual style and it's nice to swap them around to enjoy the different sensations.
God damnit. I read the comments. Nothing is ending. Not from where I’m standing anyway. I don’t know how to do anything else and I stopped wanting to a long time ago. The Jalopy Journal is what I leave behind when I’m gone. It’s the thing with my name on it that will outlast me, and I can’t imagine drawing breath without writing about old cars and keeping the lights on for the people who want to do the same. Some things might get cut loose. But the work? The work doesn’t go anywhere. It just gets lighter and meaner and more focused. Which, if you’ve been paying attention, is exactly what I do with everything I love.
I forgot the sarcasm in that post (Reference to owning/driving old cars) Cue the “it’s the end of the world as we know it” song
Carpe Diem One door closes and another opens. Do what feels right, only you know. If the 38 was mine I’d keep it, but that’s me. Dan
The best and most honest post I have read in a while…I always approach my junk from the perspective that they don’t eat much, why get rid of them? At some point it’s tough to discern who owns who♂️
Ryan, your quest is very familiar sounding. I have been downsizing life for about the last 5 yrs including a move as well. I currently have 3 pre 65’ rides and are looking to possibly sell all of them and get down to 1, a different one. Two of them won’t be hard to let go but my 57 Chieftain will be the difficult one. Your 38’ has inspired me a long time ago and every time my wife wears that red H.A.M.B. shirt, it leaves me coveting my neighbor. The 38’ that’s for sell up north on the hamb has me thinking that might be the 1 car for me but it’s too damn far away. Anyway, I say downsize however it makes you peaceful man but that is one bad *** kool 38’.
The Double J '38. I remember so many stories about it when I stumbled upon this amazing page online. How McPhail ripped the third brake light out of the package tray. The many photos of it looking just plain sinister. How you found it in a shed, on saw horses with a snubnose wrapped in burlap beneath the seat. Or the Young Guns write up in Rod and Custom magazine.
Just don't run off with some floozy your third of your age...and it will be alright. I get it though, sometime you gotta be honest with yourself, it can be liberating.... Now get some help and bolt that thing back to together as is and burn some rubber.
This pile is in a similar position. Too worn out to show its face in public. I drive her around the block a few times a year and that's about it. She is my retirement project. But, all you would have to do is say the word and I would drive her to any dragstrip in the country to line up with that black coupe of yours. It would be my honor, as you know I love that car. Don't look at the puddle under her, not quite sure what that is... -Abone.
@Ryan Your 38 and the Jalopy Journal is your signature. That’s what you are known for. Yea, we get restless now and then. Get over it buddy. Hugs man. Don’t **** it up.
I've been here since 2001. I was 18. Posted a few years later when I could be educated about some sub culture that I knew spoke to me. It was this place. But Ryan, with all due respect, you have let the rules of this forum ruin a great thing for you. The rules here are great to keep this place on track, but they should not steal the joy of a car that isn't HAMB perfect. Your 38 was killer how it was. Get it back on the road. Maybe don't show us everything we don't need to see. Let it be a contradiction. I've got one. I'm doing things to my 53 gmc right now that would get me banned. So what, i don't post it. But I love it. My model A's and 49 convertible can keep me in the good grace of the traditional gods. Any F anyone that messages you about buying it. Instant ban.
Does your daughter have any interest in the car? It sure sounds like it is a family member. Get it on the road again and keep it simple.
Keep it....leave it with Tardel.....it will be a reason to stay in touch with Tardel.....dream once in awhile about a milder Y block....then do it when the time is right. Please ....please after you are settled.....put the idea of a Bonneville car on the front burner and take us along for the ride as you build it....and the ride as you follow that long black line. Please....tell us more about the Colorado adventure.
A wise man once said “selling only leads to future regret”, or maybe it was @Moriarity . Either way, words I live by.
Male menopause at age 50 will **** with a guys head…… ( been there and a bunch of other older fellas have too)
