Last week I attended Corvette Carlisle. The factory correct crowd is a different group. There was an autocross track my friend was throwing around his Z06 modified street/strip car on. Otherwise very few non stock cars. Pre Stingray examples were only a small percentage. Basically it was like looking a new car lot. Great for those who like it. G***ers are more my thing
I used to drive my sister back to university- about a 4 hour drive. Half way there was a 59 vette sporting about 4 different colours, running and driving for $5900 bucks. I sat in that thing, and marvelled at the steering wheel size and the way the seats sculpted around you. It was all the money I had in the world, and I had it earmarked for other things. A couple of years later I was at a house party, with a stock 62 in the garage under a car cover. Peeled back the corner of that cover for a closer look. Both are memories that stay with me more than 40 years later. The 59 would have been more fun. My current crowd are not corvette guys, but I think they would give this one some grudging acceptance, 283, headers, 4 gear, stretch of straight gravel, dare to dream…

I was contacted yesterday by a customer about building him a Rolling Bones style ch***is for his 33 3window coupe he wanted to build into a semi Bonneville style coupe. I had to tell him I had retired from the ch***is business. He asked me who I would recommend I declined to answer. The conversation continued and he told me he had contacted another reputable builder in Nebraska who advised him that he should build an IFS front/Coilover rear ch***is and not to waste his money on Bones style ch***is or car He was also advised not to chop his 33 coupe as that would destroy the value. Basically the rod shop wanted him to build a resto rod in the style they like to do. This guy is in his early 70's and this is his dream car. My advise to him was to forge ahead with his dream. I told him if he couldn't find anyone to do the job I would help him realize his dream. Different strokes for different folks. I made a lot of money building one off 28-34 ch***is that no one else would build. I also told him what to tell the rod shop but I won't repeat that.
This shows up every year at the Holiday Motor Excursion https://www.socalhcca.com/holiday-motor-excursion
Your car your blank slate, would hate to own a car that I couldn’t personalize. There are enough 100 point Corvettes that live in a trailer and never see the light of day because owners have spent so much on restoration thet can’t afford to lose a point from perfection. Picture is friend of mine Corvette. Was only driven on street a couple years before becoming full time race car.
110% correct. I was into early (62-67 in August 67 Ford took over) Shelby cars. When the conventions started in 1976 there were 3 cars on trailers. A Daytona Coupe, the first 66 GT350 being restored that was a freshly painted shell and a Coupe that was sitting on a 427 Cobra ch***is with a 427 SOHC engine. The conventions would draw around 7-800 real cars (SA production 62-70 was about 13,000 total). Today there are maybe 100-150 orig cars at conventions. They are no longer big enough to be held alone and they partner with the Pony Club of America. The reduction can be traced to a couple things. Many people own multiple cars so instead of having 1 owner bring his only car you have one guy bringing one of his 5 cars. But the big problem is indeed the restoration dilemma. They seem to only bring their restored cars to 1 convention and have it judged. It then goes home under the car cover only to be seen again when a new owner gets it. Here's the Coupe. It was restored as a 427 Cobra. The body was also put on a different ch***is and survived. If I remember the guy was asking 10-15 grand. That also included 10 more 427 Magnesium wheels that were in the bed of the truck.
If I had a C1 Corvette I would have to modify it so I can fit in it and drive it then it would have to get a 59 Olds 371.
My 63 Vette roadster had a 409 and Mickey Thompson cross ram. I wanted to put the hood on so I could daily drive it so swapped the 409 for a SBC and some $$.
View attachment 6810137 Hmmmmm. While i have had my 57 over 40 years . I paid about $8500 in about 1985 not running with a hood scoop and in pretty rough shape. I over paid a bit but i wanted it bad. I still drive it today but ill be honest id rather it have it 100% a stock fuely car worth $150,000 or more . I put a stock hood on it years ago . Still have the race car hood. Maybe some day ill use it Mine could be restored but the rare parts like the injection are long gone and the cost to retstore it even non fuely type car is way way out of my means. If it was perfect id be afraid to drive it. Right now it needs some attention . Paint is bad , interior ****s I have the corrrct cushions and frames but sticking a few grand into srat and door panels on something i do not plan to sell is tough. Id like to find a happy medium with about 400 HP and OD and brakes . As far as some super rare nash thats original that might be only one of a few left id not modify it to be some Ford Coupe wanna be. Inless you really have dreams of a hot rod Nash . The Vette in question is already very modifed do as you see fit. Id loose the flares or reduce them maybe do a road race type hot rod
My old boss bought a 57 fuely new - his last bachelor car. He traded it in on a 61 Caddie. I used to love reading him the Fuely ad prices.
Hot rodding a rare car. That is the perverbial question. If by rare you mean a one of 7 known 57 Jag XKSS then y’all got rocks in your head. However if you’re referring to say, a triple black 63 Vette split window then go right ahead.
All that needs is a week in the garage, a Sawzall, some Semi-Chrome, & 3/4 ga of red lacquer primer. I just happen to have the primer...
This one always got my attention. I wonder if it still exists. Not everyone would stuff a Ford SOHC in a vette.
Joey, you're killing me (with this post)! I just listed my Vw and then, later the Model A for sale locally. Well, the guy that came to buy the Vw found out that the A was for sale, also. Called a friend and sent him photos, SOLD! Picked them up yesterday, so I have an empty garage just waiting for one of my Dream cars. The Vette pictured above is at the Top of my list. Oh and today is my Birthday!! Hope all you HAMBers have a relaxing Labor Day.
Speaking of Duesies (?), I just saw where Gables won a concours Big trophy. Great looking machine, but I couldn't help thinking that it Definitely needed to be lower in the front!
Hey, 29sleeper; Saw that SOHC '34/Cobra f/s at an NSRA nats, & sadly figured out, that after the price - which was quite a bit for me - I'd have the expense of getting it home(a long ways...) = no-go. & of course, then getting it drivable & eventually making 2 correct cars from the one. Well, nuts anyways... Hey, Vics stuff; As rare, & as nice as the Nash is, *I* couldn't cut it up, but would hotrod it(keeping the body & most of the interior almost "stock"-looking, sorta-late 50's-early 60's hotrod/resto-rod effect, but todays' quality), after researching correlated-car-companies & their components. Simply because it's *sooo* much more interesting(to me) to see something "kept in the family", the ingenuity, imagination, & skills required to do so, & then used as a probable backstory... . Nash history, eventually mixed w/Rambler/Hudson(used Packard v8s)/AMC/Chrysler/Stellantes(& others ;( ), Kelvinator(???)/etc. Marcus...
The pics that started this thread seem to indicate a road racer rather than a hot rod. My favourite Vette is a pic I’ve seen of a ‘54 with a 8BA!
Picking out what is going to fill that empty garage could make it a great birthday! Especially when you have cash in your pocket to go looking! I would probably come home with a nice cruiser ride, and a crazy, slightly unruly toy, to satisfy both needs. Happy Birthday!
I can think of worse ways to celebrate my birthday(& I just did, this last one, sadly, this's one I won't/can't forget), than selling some cars I don't want anymore, & then guy buying one, sells the other(s) for me, right then & there... Geezzz, how do people have this luck. I can't sell free iced drinks to folks in hell. ;( . Glad it works for somebody, somewhere... Marcus...
It is much harder to build a fast street SWEEPER/ SLEEPER then adding blowers injectors and straight axles. Just an old street racers perspective!
