This actually was an Ian Roussel car. Someone submitted footage of it that I had to cut when Yahoo! Current Driver was still in operation:

Rightfully, I titled it: "Plymouth From Hell"

Comic book fantasy. Was this trip really necessary? Some drawings and mockups before actual production would have said "No".

This 58 Chev isn't really "bad". It wears almost every customizing cliche, idiom, note, meme, idea or whatever you want to call them of the 1958-1962 era. It's over the top by 2007 tastes but is an honest and fully realized representation of one "school" of customising. I'm not sure what name this style goes by but there is a lot of thought involved. I can't vouch for the level of sanity of the creators but I like these cars.

It looks like a giant hot wheel. If it were lime green, then I'd be sold, for 12 dollars.

Let's be fair to some of the customizers, like Barris and Bailon. When a customer showed up with a stock car and gave them free reign to design and build the cars, most turned out pretty decent.

But when the customers asked to have their cars restyled for the third and fourth time, they had to build the car to the customer's specs. It's hard to be in business and turn away ready money.

Everyone picks on Barris's "The Grecian," but they usually have only seen the final product, the yellow and green beast, re-named "The Modern Grecian." The original, while not perfect was much more subdued. They goofy headlights, butterfly fins, and garish paint were added later at the request of the owner. Here is a pic of the original; not perfect , but a fairly nice restyling of a difficult car.

Bailon's first restyling of the '58 Chevy that became "Scoopy-Do" was also quite nice. Anyone have a pic of the original car?

  22. Hey Dave, I totally agree, ugly and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But sometimes, guys should leave well enough alone. Too many cars looked good in the first iteration, then when everybody got caught up in the "change for the sake of change" 60's, they went overboard.

And then there are some that just never got it, or never pulled the car out of the garage and stood back.-MIKE:eek:

  23. all this is further proof that just because its custom, doesn't make it right.

youre probably right. but to me it seems that the more work that looks obvious in a car usually winds up making the car look crummy. most of these cars on this thread in fact seem like a lot of work and not so much thought. customs i always thought should look clean and understated, not just different. my two cent donation for the day.

I agree with you. When you went to a car show back then, you knew you were really going to see something. You would see a rolling sculpture that was so unlike anything you saw before.

Those over the top cars made such an impression that we still can recall them 40 years later.

But now our tastes have become very refined and the most popular customs don't go to far from their original Detroit shapes. That is progress I guess.

    ProEnfo,
Awesome show photo, thanks for posting.

I was thinking the same thing. It's one thing to screw up a recently built rod or custom. It's just stupid to me to take a restored original custom and do that to it. It's not like the Duroso car is a thing of beauty to start with, but it looks worse now! The same thing was done to the sectioned candy red 55 buick (Loren Sharp car?) a few years ago too. A tweek here or there to improve the lines is one thing, but the high tech look sucks! I guess it's up the the current owner to do as he wishes.

Believe it or not that car has been restored. The owner supposedly spent $150,000 to restore it. I even think it's crazy and I love 58 Plymouths, in fact I currently have one. I don't know if the car is actually a custom since it was a Plymouth concept car, but it certainly fits the ugly part.

Here are a couple of restored pics
