im just curiouse if anyone has seen or has pictures of a 57 olds g***er????? closest thing i have seen was a 56 olds but not a 57......... cause also i am now in the process of buildin a 57 g***er WHOOOOOOO!!!
At 4000 lbs. vs. 3200 lbs. for the lower lineage Chevys & Fords they weren't exactly g***er fodder.... that's not saying there wasn't one or more built but there wouldn't have been a good reason to start 800 lbs. in the hole..... CC
Don't know if it would qualify as a g***er but back in the late 50's or early 60's there was a guy in Connecticut who had a chopped 57 Olds that had a blown 433 in.Olds motor with a huge bubble in the hood.I believe he raced it as well as showing it.Some really nice custom touches;canted quad headlights, mouth grille. It was changed over quite a bit and made into a wild show car(gold Metalflake with a transparent top center section).I have a magazine article around here somewhere;I'll see if I can dig it up.I'm sure Anthony(00Mack)knows the car I'm talking about.
This is proof of my theory. G***ers are the new red wheels, flat black and skulls fad. That would be an especially sad fate for a cool car.
Sad fate? sounds like a good idea to me. Some of us have always liked the g***er look and not just jumping on a fad. My "almost" first car at 16(my dad said, "NO WAY") was a 53 Chevy X-g***er, sitting up high and mighty, Engine long gone, needed body work, But the look is what got me, and that was in 86'. If you don't even know this guy or his wagon keep that ridiculous theory to yourself. Would'nt you rather him to this to the wagon then slam it with 22 inch wheels and low profile tires?
I have a hard time picturing a 57' as a g***er, they just look too heavy to do that. I guess you could be the trail blazer!
OK, I guess I stand corrected. Why not a g***er made from a mid seventies he****? Or a chopped Merc g***er? Or a 4 door Gran Marquis? Or any heavy big car? Because g***ers are race cars. Faux g***ers are faux race cars, but they are supposed to LOOK like race cars. A '57 Olds Fiesta wagon? And the guy says that he knows it'll be slow. But it'll LOOK fast? C'mon, that is stuffing a pair of socks rolled up into your pants. The reason I said what I did is that '57 Fiesta wagon is a really neat car. G***erizing it is like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa. Prove my point? Someone post a pic of a Fiesta and let's photochop it. As a phony g***er, a modern style car with big wheels and as a traditional style semicustom with Supremes and a candy fade paint job. Of course it's his car. I know. But he DID ask, ya know?
yes i know this car is gonna be heavy but im gonna do alot to cut down weight. front frame with be changed up no independent suspention. no GIANT bumper, no hood, plus a 454 wont hurt it. but i like the way tingler put it. its not gonna be a g***er particularly but it will move. i have had this car sittin for a few years and i was gonna drag the ***** but than i wound upi doin that to my 55 chavy that was gonna be a g***er. but i have been wantin to do a big stupid g***er ever since i saw the 49 caddy g***er that runns 11's in atco all the time.............. so hopefully you guys will see me beatin the ever loving hell outta this thing later on this year.......
As far as big heavy g***ers... Depends on what cl*** you wanted to run. Have you forgotten the Flintstone Flyer Packard. Lots of engine and body combos back when, CI displacement vs weight put you in a cl*** where you at least had a chance to be compe***ive. Not all g***ers were tri five Chevys and Willy's with blown Chryslers.
Well, the old saying was "If it don't go, chrome it". The 21st century adage is "If it don't go and you can't afford to chrome it, make it into a faux g***er". But a Street Freak is closer to a Donk than a gas cl*** car. Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Loved that Packard. It was an N.H.R.A. record holder. If you remember any thing about drag racing in the 60's, there where a lot of st.wagon's thet held record's. Bel air's ,Chevelle's ,Dodge, Plymouth, all 4-door's, and brand new. Nickleson(62 Chev). The ram chargers, ect. Super stock .I"ve seen 55 to 61 Chev wagon g***ers, so why not an Old's. Cub. in.divided by weight= cl***. Hove
Absolutly, there was a time, before the current cookie cutter- belly****on -1-800-racecar-****ola- mentality of today, a 57 Olds was as viable a g***er as anything else. Back then we raced what we had and the local drag strips were full of a motley (by todays standard) ***ortment of racers. If you want to build a "traditional" g***er, a 57 Olds would certainly appropriate.
Dear lord. Its not the mid 60's anymore. There aren't 50 ******** drag racers waiting on every corner to blow your doors off. There are 50 Ricers on every corner.....and if they want to race, who cares? Ol' Skool DONKS rule.
The car is the right time period, and it's yours.Go for it,you'll have lots of fun.Racing isn't about having what everyone else is doing or did.Be unique!
the guys at radar wheels in jersery have a few old g***er type cars one a 60 dodge wagnon thats relly cool this olds sounds like it would be a great car and a ton of fun go for it in the early 60,s we made g***er out of what you had cl***es were weigh to h.p.ratio some guys took heavy cars to be in lower cl***es i,m sure somebody got dad,s 57 olds wagnon and will a picture of it here go for it
Racing in general is all about making the car as light as possible. No matter what type of racing or what cl***. If the guy was building the car specifically to race and he had to win, then the advice to start something lighter might be warranted. If he is just building something for his enjoyment then what does it matter. As long as he's happy with his car, that's only criteria that it has to meet. But then again, there is nothing that say's he can't build a racing winning machine out of his heavier car. If I recall the Ramchargers even experimented with a wagon. It wasn't a g***er but the same rules of physics apply. Ultimately, it's not our car.
Build it and have fun, I''ll come and watch it run. Can't stand it any more watching Comeros, Firebirds and comp dragsters. And bracket **** hitting the brakes in a drag race WTF. Watching the old g***ers and old coupes is where it's at for me. Could be cause thats what i grew up on and and gettin older makes ya want to go back in time. Thank God Nostalgia racing is making a good start.
I feel a whole lotta love happening here in this thread. Can a "real" G***er have an inline 6 Chev/GMC? Just checking
I looked at the packard sedan and 4-dr 39 chev pics previously posted on this thread and think they are awesome and depict the true spirit of rodding and racing. It should STILL be about RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG and ENJOY!!! There is only one rule...NO RULES!!!
