Anybody know if "Gasoline Alley" in New York that was featured in Street Rodder in the 80's is still around? They had some neat shots of that place in the article. Looked like it was about the size of a single car garage packed wall to wall, floor to ceiling.
I've drivin by this building for years. A couple of days ago they removed the wood siding and behold.
Now you gotta wonder what the old timer with the pocket glasses case was in there for! I wonder what his shop looked like...
In the late 60s, the local speed shop had a guy (probably around 70 y.o.) in the back room assembling engines, trannys etc. Kind of a crusty old guy but he knew everything, even the (then) current stuff. He was a wealth of information, and saved my young, stupid ass a couple of times.
There was an "old guy" working as a counterman in a local parts house several years back. He always wore a sports coat and tie in the cool weather and always wore a shirt & tie in the summer. His fingernails were always clean and he was always soft spoken & respectful. That guy could tell you how to install any part, in any car and very seldom had to look up a part. Tell him year, engine, make & model and he'd go back in the stacks and come out with the part in hand. I was in there once or twice, when a know-it-all kid didn't trust him and asked him to look it up. The guy was right, whenever I saw him do it. Don't sell the "old guys" short - show some respect to age & experience. Sometimes they actually know something.
I like the small scale version of the SuperModified chassis hanging from the ceiling! Here's what a complete car built from the parts in the speed shop picture would look like:
Bruce Lancaster posted that link and I lost it a few computers back.....I ordered the "print" and you can see in the back ground of the sign the old parts store logo. Bruce, if you read this do you remember where the site was located? Chris Nelson Kansas
Hey, any of you older farts in the Dallas area remember Harry's Hot Rod Shop. Man, I loved that place, I remember my brother Kendall taking me there when we where quit a bit younger, ok, a lot younger.
caffeine : >>"there is a guy who has a shop in Neshanic Station, NJ that reminds me of the above picture.....still has a similiar sign and a bunch of period cars inside. brick building....not sure if its the guys personal shop or what..."<< That's CARS Inc, sells repro & used Buick parts, expensive but has a lot of inventory. 1940AD- CA Speed in N.B., right? I thought the same thing- might be!
Yes! I was just in there again during the winter cause I was bored. It looks just like that. Tall ceilings and all! The guy there didn't seem to interested in the old school stuff - more on the new car accessories to sell. Some very cool 50's pieces, trophies, etc in the showcases though. The layout seems almost identical to those 2 pics, main parts counter on the right, displays in the corner.
Harry still has a place in Arlington, but are you were refering to the one that was in the Grove on Buckner? I made my dad take me there when I was a little kid (I'm 35 now.......... I think..?).
some nice pics I guess you guys saw the latest issue of HopUp. Talk about a fantastic place. Been all ower those pages with a magnifying glass for hours. ...some guys just aren't in it for the money. Paul
