These are the last pictures I have, I could have taken hundreds more. The collection was so overwhelming its hard to even tell you what I saw and like I said I only saw about 1/3 of it.

Some of things I did not take pictures of were: display case after display case of pit passes, tickets, autographed pictures from just about every racer in the world, helmets from all the biggies, things like an alligator hunting license and pictures of Don hunting alligators with AJ Foyt. Etc, etc, etc...

There are more buildings like this last one, I guessed I was taken in 4 buildings. This building was full of Lincolns and Cadillacs, many INDY 500 pace cars.

I am told there is a building of Mustangs, and one of corvettes.. Again many Pace Cars.

Thank you very much for posting this. Something like this creates a feeling of reverence as you view the various displays. I hope this collection stays in tact. It would be a shame to see it broken up after the obvious work and money it took to amass it.

AHHH, he owns a bank and had interest or ownership in a bunch of other companies too,

and if you look at any of the pictures it will take you about 12 seconds to figure out what bank.

My LAME-O car club, organized it and only about 10 guys showed up... cuz its snowing ... and apparently (I moved here a year ago from the Michigan snow belt) when you get an inch of snow in Indiana the world comes to an end.

Eat your heart out, Jay Leno! What a great collection. I'm sure that having all that to look at every day keeps him 80 years YOUNG! Must have had a wonderful life. My congratulations!

Pretty awesome stuff! It would be nice to see that stuff spread out a little more in a bigger building. It is always nice to see that stuff is still around.I've seen similar cramed into darker, more confined places.

Thanks for posting. In reply #25 with the Duke standing behind the T-Bird. In the photo just below is a white race car with a little canopy roof in front of an Indy sign. Anyone know any more about he car, looks like Sommers or Summers on the door??

Thanks for taking time to post these pics. That is one helluva nice collection. I love open wheel racing, and there sure is some history in there.

I never understood collecting and not letting anyone see it.

It is a SUMAR Special. Mr. Smith's racing team was Sumar.

Here is a link on some more history and pictures.

Awesome collection, have heard about it for years and think I saw the yellow pennzoil car at the brickyard museum on loan.

Personally, he's welcome to hoard that stuff all he wants. Just the fact he assembled the collection earns plenty of respect from me. Hopefully he lays the groundwork for it to stay together after he's gone. Any less disrespects his incredible accomplishment.

A place like that could be sustainable as a museum, but it would have to be near a major raceway & city, not in terra haute. More like across the street from Indianapolis/Oreilly Raceway park so he can skim off huge race crowds.

I am going to defend Mr. Smith. When you walk through these buildings next to every piece of Memorabilia is a picture of his grandkids fishing, or them in a Halloween custom.

I think the majority of this stuff, was not "hoarded" they are gifts and/or items that his companies or he used.

I DO NOT KNOW, but I assume that some of the reason he does not show his collection is in his mind "its just stuff from my family, who would care about it but me?"

I live in Avon (west side of Indy) and I just found out there's a guy on our street that owns several old Indy cars including one of the STP turbines. (His business is aicraft engine remanufacturing, so I guess that one makes sense.) Those old cars are out there, you just never know where.
