Sorry Roger your right it is not a Galaxie. and that kid that you were talking about, It wasn't me, was it????

Bones Wagon is Kool and you'll be impressed. The Roadster is awful but the motor is something to see. I was amazed how many horse are under the hood. The motor looks four foot wide in person. Hand built dracula car?? Not in Tulsa. l cannot wait to see that one.........

    Happy Trails,

  3. Cars like this make me revert back to when I was 4 years old and I didn't think about drivability and other practical things like that. Complete suspension of disbelief. I love it.

Thanks Roger for letting me know...I was sweating it out.

Here is the only Kustom that was at the show that I hadn't seen in a while.
This Merc years ago was a mess and even though I would have done some things different. (Side Mirrors AHHHHH!!) Its nice to see it finished. Anybody have any pictures of this car on a trailer at the Last Run?? Years ago......

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

  5. Looks like a Chrysler Hemi to me a 354 or something maybe?

I'm probably going to hurt someone's feelings here ( not my intention) as I think the pink bomb has some connection to the HAMB or at least there has one here like it at some time or another but that Bugger really grosses me out. I'm not sure if its the color or someting else about it maybe a combination of things but it just makes me shudder everytime I see it.

  6. Kinda like chopped shoeboxes, Mercs and traditional 32's, 31's, 30's coupes. These are becoming the camaros/bellybutton cars of the hotrodding world. It's refreshing to see creativity once in awhile, as opposed to just well-executed duplication. While the respect is there for the workmanship, it gets redundant from duplication.

Yeah-I usually think black is boring but I really think a satin black with simple red/yellow/orange seaweed flames would have been so much more killer...

Here's my deal... Hot Rods and customs are about form and function. The form comes from an absolute dedication to not compromising functionality.

Think about the Doane Spencer roadster. If that car is boring to you, I can't help ya...

Think about the hirohata merc. Same thing there...

On the other hand, these cars are really just different implementations of Roth's style. And like the cars they emulate, most of them don't run. I'm glad someone builds them because they are fun to look at... but frankly, I don't really get why someone would work so hard on something they can't haul ass in.

OK, this thread really bugging me. The show car, drivability stuff. When I was a kid in the sixties I would drool over the wild show cars like this bubbletop. Being to young to drive, I could care less if they were functionable, they functioned just fine in my dreams (hmmm... so did the girls in those dreams come to think of it). Anyway, the point is there is room in this sport for both the drivers and the show only cars and I'm really sick of the bickering and slamming between the two camps. Build what you want, but appreciate the others, we all have our own idea of what we want to accomplish weather it's in primer and you can drive the hell out of it or it lives in a trailer so it can win car shows.

I don't think anyone is slamming anyone... Folks are just giving their opinions is all... And there is nothing wrong with that.

  15. Sure would nice to see one that drove TO shows and stuff. Always thought it would be cool to build a driver, bubbletop.

In the 60's Starbird drove his stuff to his local show as often as not. He also made sure that the newspaper folks had a camera person standing by the side of the road to capture the moment for free advertising. I can also remember a local TV news piece on him driving his blue stick steer car around and explaining how it worked.

I don't think that Starbirds show requires it but most of the major shows require that the car run under it's own power to be eligable for awards these days.

It's a decent show. Saw Sam's draggin Vicky, what an awsome car, Sam said he couldn't wait to get to the track. Just walking through it becomes evident that there is a wide variety of agenda's being shown. Personally, a trailer queen, show only, however you want to characterize them, are not what I am interested in. Wheather you are a "HAMB Star" or not, personally, I am interested in cars that are driven - on the street - not just on and off a trailer, not just around a show, but to and from places. There are many examples of both at Starbirds show, just linger at the ones that please you, walk on by the ones that don't. Just give everyone space to be what they want to be and don't pretend you are what you aren't.

I appreciate the workmanship, the dedication etc., but I especially like cars, and the people who build cars, that are driven. (Not those who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk - crappy cliche' - they know who they are)

  19. Well I like it, and if it runs and drives I like it more.

The instrument pods are Fairlane, as is the rear (quarters and deck), which the builder told me came from a 62. The grille underneath the taillights is also Fairlane. The car is steel, and it runs. They qualified for the "fine nine" award but really didn't care as they were just happy to be there and having fun. The builder invited me inside the ropes and I looked the car over for quite awhile. Now if I could just talk my wife into letting me make a really big BBQ pit...

He also invited me inside the ropes today, but I declined thinking I didn't want to start something with all the people there. I guess that was you I seen inside the ropes today. I was taking pics again as you were getting out of the ring. Usually the bubbble tops don't move me but this one and the other two that are simular did. I didn't like the 2 other bigger ones.

    Amen, ya gotta drive em.

Here is the car I had in the show. The record cold, the cinders on the 100 miles of turnpike, kept me from driving it to the show. We hauled it in a box and my brother teased me a little about that. But it is a driver.

i just got back from tulsa. mick, i'm sorry i missed you, i wish i would have known you were gonna be there. we did run into rashy and i saw larry's 32, stunning as always!

i was there with bill and the pink freak/freakshow truck-a-ma-jig. we were sitting right across from the 'telstar', and judging by the chassis, it sure looks like a driver! i looked at that for many hours on saturday, and grew on me more and more as the day went on. it was a lot nicer than that merc (sorry to the owner, but too many themes in that one).

after being considered for the 'fine nine', but not making the cut, bill was miffed, but what can you say about car show politics? the crowds around his car were deep and relentless, so he still feels the car is a good draw for promoters, so good news for motor city folks, he's thinking about the autorama....

    Hey MonsterFlake,

I didn't have the time to spend at Starbirds like I would have liked. We went
Thursday for a few hours and had to head back. Friday I was stuck at
work and I spent Saturday night at a Junior high dance. I must be getting
old because I sure hate todays music. The Freakshow was something else.
And I was thrilled that it was there. I've seen pictures on the web but until you see it in person you don't get the full effect. Needless to say I spent a lot of time around it and your right I think a show promoter would love to have it at their show.

Was Bill's wife the one filling up the stands?? I talked to her a couple of
times I try to stay out of the way when guys are setting up. Thank Bill for
showing his truck in T-Town. Having the opportunity to see his truck in person was a blessing. I'll never forget it. I'l run ya down next time.

Politics & indoor car shows? You have to be kinding.... Ha, Ha, Ha.....

I told some of the guys I likes it so maybe I'm part of the blame. Sorry next
time I'll try to keep my mouth shut.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick
