true old laquer

i need some black old laquer , the reason
i bought a 64 chev sedan , 40k miles , original car , original paint ,
the roof and lh 1/4 panel have a small dent in them i whan to fix .
we have talked with the paint store where we buy our paint ( we have a body shop ) the new laquer is different to the paint in the 70s and early 80s ,we are told if we can find some old paint on the shelf that would be best . i would think that paint sitting that long would be
hard.
but if anyone has any old school paint let me know

Not bustin' your chops just another and perhaps better option.

I've sprayed the newer laquer next to the older laquer after you buff it out as long as you have a color match you can't really tell. Compatibility shouldn't be a problem it should be all gassed out after 20 or 30 years, at least I didn't have any problem with it.

 

you have used the new laquer , side by side with the old ? and it worked good . i just dont want to use urethane .

 

I think you are looking for nitrocellulouse lacquer, mostly industrial paint/ chemical shops sell it.

 

yea its got less to no lead so it doesn't flow out as well but if your gonna buff it anyway its not that big a deal.

Black should be an easy match, just tell 'em ya want it to look like mid-night in the cypress swamp and that should be more than close enough.

 

We used to match nitro lacquer all the time with acrylic lacquer and never had any trouble. It works about the same and is easy to shoot. Plus it's a little more flexible than the nitro was. Try it and it should be fine.

Your 64 had acrylic laquer froom the factory["MAGIC MIRROR"]was the byword then....it was a little less glossy than urethane even when buffed....Nitro Laquer q=was only used up into the fifties on most cars.
Any acrylic laquer will duplicate your finish if the formula is adjusted for aging... have a PPG dealer use the "Prophet" a color analyzer- to get a "read" of your old finish -then he can compute a match formula for you.....
