I have a 53 caddy we're working on right now. We just pulled the motor out last night. I was hoping to leave the tranny in the car but that was a no go. The motor and the tranny are seemingly joined for all eternity. I have all the bolts pulled. The starter is off. It's just hanging there. You can get a couple screw drivers in there for some space but it will not come off. Anyone know if there is a trick to pulling the tranny off without breaking stuff? I'm at a loss. It's a pre fire auto tranny. help...anyone. oh and thanks to a couple of hambers for coming out and lending hands.
Did you split the fluid coupling? There's about a hundred screws (bolts) holding the back half of the fluid coupling to the "flexplate". The flexplate is bolted to the crank.
The only way you will get it apart is to take allllllll those bolts loose. Be careful there is a gasket between the flex plate and the converter.
I'll have to look under all the grease. Anyone have an engine diagram...gonna need one to put the shit back together anyways. I'll look when I get home. Hope I didn't already break something. Never seen anything like it before.
The guys are right, you need to take out all 32 bolts around the flywheel edge.Bottom half first, then rotate crank to get to the rest. Auto trans fluid will spill out everywhere.
already bathed in tranny fluid... anyone have an engine diagram???? I need to find a manual..the big one. I have the little one.
I knew there wasn't a hundred but it seemed like more than 32 when I did it years ago. But I thought there was a drain plug in those couplings. No?
