Who's idea what kind of "guy" you are?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Feb 27, 2007.

  1. I own a Vette, but sure as fuck wouldn't consider myself a Vette "guy". And i'm building a 32, but fo sho won't be a 32 "guy". I'd like to think i'm just a guy (part time dickhead) with a Vette and a 32. So what makes someone a whatever "guy"?

People's expectations...so keep'em off balance by always wearing a Kaiser-Frazer Restorer's Club T-shirt, and if they need rattling, grab them by an arm, look them in the eye with crazed intensity, and ask "Say, do you know where I could find an original accessory kleenex box for my Kaiser Dragon? I've been searching for 10 years".

You Groucho, like a lot of us are a "CAR guy" who get's his crank turned by MANY different kinds of cars- and MANY more DIFFERENT styles of cars. But there ARE guys who can ONLY get revved up for restored Corvettes- or repo Cobras. Seen them often and it's sad when they cannot appreciate more than what is directly in front of them.
I had my Roadster pickup at our local Saturday morning cruise last week and another guy pulled up next to me in his "simular", but very cobbled together creation and the lady with him pointed at my car and said to him "I like our car SOOO MUCH better because ours has CHARACTER". I wanted to tell the lady if PILE OF SHIT equals CHARACTER- You have it in spades! But I just let her think that in their own world their car rules the planet and held my tounge. Another JACKASS came over with the DUMB ASS blue tooth on his ear and pointed out to his budy how a tiny spot was missed when they sprayed the scallop on my car and did it with the hood doors open and missed a section by not closing them. And he JUST BOUGHT the ugliest RAT ROD to share the garage with his restored '66 GTO. The thing BLOWS, but again- he rules the world with a car he HASN'T TURNED ONE BOLT ON!!!

I'm a CAR GUY- just like you and most of the others on here- period.

I have a 62 vette and a 31 A right now and many other cars through the years. People who don't know you will always make judgements about you based on what you are driving that minute. Simple judgements from stupid people....

  6. Hey Jim. I would've asked her if she'd like some more "character" 'cause my cat just buried some in the catbox. TeeHee

  7. I was just talking to Mel abut this a few weeks ago, I have issues in general, and have issues with the whole "car guy" phrase. I consider myself a "classic automotive enthusiast". Well everyone drives cars. maybe "old car guy", but I have a couple of motorcycles and cars so.. just me.

Thats a dam good question, personally I try not to label, but if it walks like a duck.....shoot it. We have not entered cars shows for years just for your reasons, I'm going to get in trouble telling someone off. Kinda like when my wife and I use to play softball, always some weekend warrior fucking up the fun. I too have a Vette, that's why I came to this forum, it's a hot rod, not some stuffy stock thing, took alot of shit for customizing it.Now we are working on a 39 Plymouth..

  10. Groucho, By the looks of things, maybe your're a fiberglass guy. (Easy now, just kidding, great looking vette by the way)

  11. That blue Vette is nasty! Never thought wide whites would look so cool.....especially on a Vette!

If you emanate a singular kind of identity based on something that you own, to the exclusion of anything else, you might be tagged a "(whatever)guy." It looks like you have enough range and variety in your stable not to be labelled.

Many folk will tell you they like their stuff better, which is reasonable -- then add their moronic reason and reveal themselves to be insecure and self absorbed. Who cares?

    Your cars are cool.

I know a guy who is a vette guy through and through. has a 72 for roadracing, a late model Z06, and a 63 (?) big shitpile that has been a road race car it's whole life. never even been titled or street driven. the only thing that is not garbage on it is the VIN that says it's an original fuely car.

he's had a bunch of others..seems to like the 68 - 73's. he's all about part numbers and specs. he'll go on and on about some rare bracket for some obscure part, or some vette with a large gas tank that is one of 7 or some stupid thing.

he's a real dickhead. you don't want to be a vette guy.

I'm an old car guy. I like em all. stockers, muscle cars, hot rods and customs.

if I could only pick one I'd be a custom guy.

It can be maddening being just a car guy. I used to have a 61 bug but never thought I was a VW guy I had a 95 camaro but never thought I was a camaro guy. now I have a 64 cutlass I think I am getting closer to what i am if there is such a thing. I think a 31 five window on deuce rails is what I am but I don't own one. maybe someday.
I like the term gearhead. I think those guys with the dolls leaning on the fenders call themselves car guys.

  19. At the risk of making a HUGE generalisation, "...guys" seem to me to have a few things in common: 1. They often come late to a hobby (fad) and jump in real deep real fast feet first and become an instant authority. 2. What they like is the only thing to like 3. Don't wrench a lot. 4. Like polishing and detailing 5. Like prizes 6. Are very value oriented as in "what's it worth." 7. Their beadth and depth of car knowledge is limited to their very specific thing ( ie. they're not really car guys).

Well that's my take on profiling!

And the whole "guy" business is gay.

And I can't fucking stand "golf guys."

    That's ripe.
In the early 60's i had 64 F.I. coupe. Built my own hood scoop,
had 6-taillights,4-exhaust pipes.I removed the rocker panel &trim,
painted exposed frame body color, plus other stuf.At the same
time I had a 31 Ford Vicky. stock body on a 57 Vette frame.
A buddy of mine has a Vette & a Mustang. When he Vetting he wears his Mustang shirt,When he goes to a Mustang show he wears his
Vette jacket. Build it the way you want it. That's what Kustom's
    and Rod's are all about.

I'm an old guy that would rather be in the garage building a hot rod than driving it, or looking at other's rods. If course, I do drive 'em and look at other's rides. I guess I'm a 'Hot Rod Builder Guy'. By the way, in the old days we'd call a guy that didn't know much and bought a finished rod a Waxer, cuz that's about all he could do.

  23. Yeah, seems that way. I do throw in a "metal" one here and there. BTW, i've been looking for a steel Vette, but they're getting pretty scarce

  24. You beat me to it,i just like hot rods rather it be a bike, car, truck, boat, etc,as longs as it has a motor to work on and hop up then thats me,i dont know what i am besides an ass hole as the wife calls me.:D

  25. I hope I'm never defined by what I own..... as much as how I treat people . Yes I have a passion for cars of all sorts and I own a few, but I hope that if there is a definition of who I am , it would be Husband, Father ,Friend .......That is my sappy for the year

  26. First let me say that you have one of the coolest Vettes I ever seen. But are you a "vette guy"? I'd say no F'in way. Real vette guys would commit hari-kari if they saw your car and thats probably why I like it so much. There ain't nuthin cooler than an early vette with a big motor done 60's style. And there ain't nothing more boring then all those numbers matching restored early vettes that never leave their garages. Hell, I got a 57 chevy 210 and if
I had to build it stock I wouldn't want to own it. The factory gave us the blank canvas so we can build em' our way.

    Some would say I'm a dickhead,some would say I'm a nice guy.
Some would say I'm a genius and some would say I can't find my ass with both hands full moon and radar.
Some would say I'm a slob and some would say I'm neat.
Some would say I'm a racer and some would say I'm a nut.
Some would say I'm a family man and some would say I'm a wild man.
But mostly to quote a venerable authority on the subject,"I am What I am and That's all what I am".;)

  28. i think the 60 vettes you've owned mildly qualifies you as a vette guy.

  29. I bought a Vette 2 weeks ago. I can already feel myself turning into a dick... Oh nevermind maybe I've always been this way! My only complaint with the car is how hard it is to have sex in the car. If anyone else was there it would have be impossible!
