    Hi,

I'm looking for a small modular housing similar to a Mark Williams housing like this one
but cheaper and as narrow as possible (I'm shooting for something about 12" wide but I don't have a 9" gear set in front of me to determine if that is even possible). I am looking to build a narrow IRS unit using 9" internals. I was hoping that someone on the board might know of a cheaper, smaller alternative. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Why not a ford 8.8" IFS rear end out of a late model ford cobra or something? Strong enough parts are available for almost any amount of HP that you can make (some of those cobras are wicked fast!)

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to take a look at the new mustang IRS. The center section by Duchman is what I am looking for just a little bit out of my price range. Looking at it made me think of installing a halibrand type quick change rear end. They are narrow, fairly plentiful and cheap because a lot of the circle track guys use then, and can be easily modified for IRS. I'm not too framiliar which models are best but I'm sure the internet will have alot of informaiton on them.

Thanks for all of the help.

The 8.8" ford IRS was also available in some of the later thunderbirds and lincoln mark VIII's. If'n I'm not too far off last time I looked some of those cobras are running into the 9's on that basic rear... Plenty stout for a lightweight car.

If you run across a cheap quick change, let me know.

I've seen used complete units on ebay for $350 plus shipping. Not "cheap" but definitley reasonable.

Speedway Engineering used to make quickchange side bells with "ears" for use with IRS setups. At least they did 20 years ago when we ran 'em in 300ZX Trans Am car (with a NON-quickchange center section). Just needed to mill the "ears" to get the pinion angle you wanted.
