With road trip weather rapidly approaching, I get the bug to travel the backroads and stay in old motels, eat great non politically correct food. I was reading the other day of a restored motel with cool old themed rooms. Someday when I can retire I plan on traveling every back road there is just traveling and enjoying the sights of American history.

List any that you know of that are time capsules......

There is one place in particular in South Dakota that is fantastic. They got all kinds of cool***** including old cars, rare cars, really rare stuff, farm equipment, a General Lee, one of Elvis' Motorcycles, and a bunch of wierd old stuff. I've been twice. Sure, it's creepy, I paid 8 bucks to get in, and was alone in a demented wonderland for hours. One of the few I've seen that stay true to the Real Roadside Attraction. I'll try to dig up more info if you're intertested. From memory, I know it's on the same highway as Wall Drug, but if you miss that place, you're probably doing yourself a favor.

In the heart of the Redwood trees, drive your car through one. This one is about 80 miles south of Eureka, CA.

  10. Yeah, it's in Murdo SD on I90 about 80 miles east of Wall/Wall Drug(another roadside attraction/tourist trap:rolleyes:)

The blue whale outside of Oklahoma City is a long-standing roadside wonder. I think Rashy lives close by..See two wonders within miles of each other! :p

I've stopped at every tourist trap and curiosity on the Western half of Route 66 (what's left of it), and Cadillac Ranch is surely up there. Also, Pop's Diner in Clinton OK (I think) is like a*****in' time capsule. Not that it's fancy or covered in chrome or anything, but the old timers hold court at a bunch of tables pushed together in the middle, and the ceiling tiles have enough tobacco stain to warrant a visit from the ATF. The pie there is*****in' goooood too.

Lots of good ideas in the Route 66 books that are out there.

Sort of cool, and sort of roadside. Drive through a tree in Northern California. This is me driving our rental through last October

There was a bunch of places like what you're looking for full of Americana in and around this area, but this is the only thing I actually got a photo of.

I try my best to not covet another man's posessions, but I have serious lust in my heart after seeing that diner. I'm off to confession.

Here's a few snapshots of my visit there while on my way to California. Certainly well worth the stop. Plan on a couple of hours. The place is very large compared to alot of other auto related museums

If you're out in South Dakota lookin at the other stuff, check out Devil's tower and Mt. Rushmore. Also the town before you get to Rushmore is pretty cool. Been a long time since I've seen Rushmore and I heard they built a parking garage and charge an admission fee. Still worth it if you're out that way. All three are a short drive off of I-90.

If you're coming out west, make sure to stop in Tombstone, AZ on your way to Bisbee. I highly recommend the Shady Dell. You basically rent a trailer, just like you would a hotel room. All the trailers are restored and full of vintage stuff. Its a really amazing place. Dot's Diner is also there, which is a restored 1957 diner, and they have really great food. www.theshadydell.com

This is a shot of the dining cars restaurant in Buellton, California well at least they were there when we moved from California to West Virginia in 2003. Picture was taken about 10 years ago or so.

These pictures are of the former A&W on Spring St. in Paso Robles.
From what I understand it was torn down recently.

The next picture is of the old Coke building in Santa Maria, California. As far as I know it's not torn down but it's no longer the Coke building.
