How many HG/GR's will make it to Tulsa or Mokan by the first of the summer and what engine. Is there anything other than, flathead ford. chevy 6, slant 6, GMC 302's. I have heard of at least one 223 ford 6. Is there any falcon motors, buick straight 8's, pontiac flathead straight 8, pontiac 194.5 four's, chevy four cylinders. Hudson 6. chrysler flathead 6, this list could be nice and long. There is no telling where Bubba might find some other logging truck.
Did log trucks ever use a four cylinder ?? Boy some of the midgets around here sure did!! I can't believe someone hasnt come up with one of these dudes. Little chevy two motor out of a midget with a afb four barrell and about 7500 plus rpm. Ought to fly ??? Ya know i think uncle Otis has one in a boat as well. Wish ya hadnt brought that one up.!!!!!!!!!
One that is not on your list...I am trying to buy a 166 ci VW engine. Pre-62 mag block...in dragster now with FI and alky running 9.20s. Parts to maintain are really cheap...compared to my 235. I wonder how many rochesters this deal will take???
Ya, the bug would be a killer, but sac religious i believe. The "spirit of the bug" would be violated if anyone used a "german" engine! I own VW's as well and have caught so much **** for it over the years with my hot rod friends. Some think they are "cute" but others just wont even look at them. In the summer some car shows wont even sponsor a cl*** trophy for them. Our area VW club takes our own trophys to some shows. I did see a couple at the Hundred Car Pile Up show this year though, maybe theirs hope as they get older.?? Being in Indy there are a lot of the old VW Midgets still runnng at some ofthe indoor shows.
Hey Mudflap, Lynn Lane was fun, I went to see racer Ray Crawford, I still don't know who saw us, I hope it wasn't the local police officer that is in that area a lot. Boy the front end sure feels light. It's a little hard to steer with only one front wheel on the ground while going through the gears!
all the streets in tulsa and you pick the one a buddy of mine lives on he said it sounded good now you need to get out to the track
Hey Godzilla I don't know about the spirit but I ran a 170 in my midget and it would run with the best
different........just ask the 'two headed sideshow freak' what he thinks about being 'different' cool and different are not the same. Cheers, Drewfus
Harsh man...really harsh. I talked to the spirits again....and they said it would be "cool" to be different. You might want to rethink asking a two headed side show freak about what is cool or different...one of his heads is definately on wrong.
yeah, he said he was of two minds about good or bad....was fun watching him argue with himself but Cheers, Drewfus (closet VW lover)
Isn't it interesting how the "Spirit of the Bug" tells each of us something different....just what we need to hear. Well, think I will burn some inscents now and contemplate how many HA/GRs could park on the head of a pin.
A bug motor could be interesting... I had a 1960 white beetle with an absolute killer 2110cc with dual webbers, hurst 4 speed and a 4.11 posi rearend. Car would eat small block V-8's for lunch stop light to stop light. Ran low-mid 13's in the 1/4 too...
Early dragsters had all kinds of powerplants in them...innovation ruled. They ran engines in the front and rear...and even in both the front and rear. They even tried a Lycoming airplane engine. Not too much different from a VW or Porsche. If we could see a wing tank with a flathead in back some day soon...why not a vw mounted in front. Why not two bangers side by side or a straight eight mounted sidewinder. Its all good. Its the way it was...
No...the spirits of the guys that done been there...and done that. The likes of C. J. "Pappy" Hart, Creighton Hunter, Joaquin Arnett, John Brandley and Calvin Rice. No posers in that group. They got out there and mixed it up and planted the seeds of this great thing we do on the weekends. They are the true voice of this sport...the spirit that should guide us. It is their voice that I listen to...whose voice do you hear???
My first post here (HA/GR board) but I've been lurking for a while following the concept and builds with interest. Let me say first off that I'm not trying to start anything here and don't have a dog in the fight, but the VW engine disscussion peaked my interest. I spent a large part of the 1970s wrenching on a variety of VW racers from ministocks to midgets to drag cars etc. and as a result became quite familiar with the intricacies of the little dubbers. Let me start off by saying a true 1961 VW engine was a 1200cc, single port head/w31mm valves, 40 hp engine. To say that a VW engine is a VW engine regardless of year is not correct. While almost identical to the naked eye, there are big differences from the early 40 hp single port to the later dual port 1600 engines. It would be like saying a 292 ohv chevy inline 6 is the same as a 235 ohv inline 6 due to the fact they are both ohv inline 6s. As I've seen numbers like 166c.i. (2700cc) and 2100cc bandied about I have to believe these engines were built on, at least, later model type 1 dual port engine cases. In fact 2700cc would probably be more in the type 4 territory (late model bus, Porsche 914 etc.)I don't believe the 1961 cases and heads would have the meat and clearences required for the cylinders and stroker crank needed to get that kind of displacement, (i.e. a 600 c.i. sbc based on a 265c.i. sbc block) and even if it were possible the true 1961single port heads would make it all pretty much useless. Again, I'm not trying to stir anything up, in fact I probably have most of the parts to build a high h.p. VW squirreled away, but I would have to wonder if others would see it as in the pre 62 "spirit." JMHO
I think others would not see the late VW as the spirt Kazootie, good post. I would love to run a 300in ford engine but I guess that would not be in the spirt either.
Here is a Colorado question...What kind of engine did Eddie Jackson run in his midget when he won six RMMRA Championships and 82 main events beginning in 1960?
A little before my time, but the late, great MR. Jackson was pretty much a Offy man back then. The Mauro 5 I believe.
Godzilla, I like the way you think! Sidewinders, twins, rear engines all sound in the spirit of the 50's and 60's. The cookie-cutter cars of today are fast and safe but they lack "cl***". The car builders of old tried everything the builder could dream up. Some worked and some were disasters but, they were interesting. A big engined, VW powered HA/GR would really hook on 6 inch tires and kick all our ****s. Is it in the "spirit" of HA/GR's...I'd say so. If everyone built their cars/engines the same, why waste time racing, just draw straws every week to see who wins that week. Ron
