The problem isn't necessarily going 200mph. To get in the club and wear the hat, you have to break a record in your cl*** over 200. Apparently more people have summited Mount Everest than have made the 200mph club since its inception.
You pick a cl***, and then go for it. If the record in that cl*** is 219mph, you have to go faster than that to get in the 200 club. It's not just hitting 2 bills, it's doing it faster than the record, which is where the really hard part comes in. Brad
Hooley has done it more than once. Last year we got him into the 200MPH club but it was a lot of work. Go to this site for the whole story. http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/hooley/hooley-2006-Story.html also go to the other links on that page for more iformation on building the car and our previous runs. As far as going 200 I have done that and it wasn't to hard. Big motor in a small car. The record and club is something else. I did get into the Hop Up Magazine 100 MPH Club. Pre 1935 Flathead Four cylinder powered cars. Much more exclusive.
I know a guy who did 220+ in a '29 A roadster. 366 C cl*** record holder. Takes some serious TQ/HP to push a barn door 200+. I'm aiming for a D/STR record with my '30 roadster. Working on the plans now and then the work begins. I know another guy with a 370 FE/Cammer who has done 220+ as well in a deuce roadster. Note: turtle decks cause rear ends to lift at about 210 as I've been told. mike
I work for Gene Winfield and I'm a member of the Sidewinders and even though we not trying for the record this year there is alot more to it than just going 200 the salt is like ice at thoughs speeds just my .02
Gee ... thanks zombiehut! Because I'm a member of the North of 49 team; it's great to see that run ... over, and over, and over, and over!! Couple more MPH's and Ted or Don could be "sporting" one of those RED "fandangled" pieces of head gear!! (best in 2006 = 202+ MPH; record stands at 215 MPH - Barbee Boys) 1149 B/STR - '28 "A" Roadster Pickup.
I spoke with Gene a couple of weeks ago and he mentioned he was starting a '32 to race this Aug. When you get a chance could you start a new thread here on the HAMB and fill everyone in on the details. Gene mentioned that with having two cars there this year he could use some help in the pits. Perhaps a post on the HAMB regarding this new build could generate some interest and committments from folks.
There are several 200mph culb guys on this board that got there with a old engine . Last year onna them ran 300+
I made the club in '04. Took 41 years to get a red hat. I had to go 230.8 to beat the club minimum of 230. The hardest part was staying in the gas on the run with the wind that was pushing the car hard right. I didn't know if I was going to hit the five mile sign or go behind it. Bluto's driver said his run at the same time was the worst conditions he ever drove in. El Mirage 2 club member in 1992 also. DW
That 15 dollar red hat has cost some several thousand dollars. The car I helped crew had to go 232, he went 235, but the record had been raised to 238, the next year he went over that, but the guy who held the record raised it again. We went through that for six years, the car has been 247, the record still just a little higher. It looks easy, it is not. A/GMR was the cl*** we raced in. The car has more in it, but is for sale now.
There are very few "soft" records anymore. You really have to worrk your *** off AND be lucky to raise an existing mark. We'll be excited as hell if we can go 200 mph. Our cl*** record is way beyond that.
can you send me some pictures of the truck? 200 mph is a life goal of mine and i would rather do it in a truck.
What kind (resolution/detail) of pictures would you like? I've put a heck of a pile of 'em up on http://1149.ca over the past few years, Build shots through to racing. If you see any in particular you'd like better copies of email me at mike@1149.ca and I'll dig 'em up and send 'em. As far as the 200 mph question that kicked off the thread, I've seen 183, and am looking forward to perhaps attempting A this summer now that dad and Ted are there. mike
I was looking at the records and there does seem to be some soft ones still. blown fuel lakester with a 500cc engine seems pretty soft at 115. I know of some reliable and available 140hp 500c engines. that should be able to push that number up ALOT
Do you have the hood scoop extended out so far to keep salt out of the engine, or is there some aerodynamic advantage to that placement? That is seriously bookin'-it in a truck BTW. Congrats.
i was told more than a few times from record holders that speculation is BS until you get out there and do it. lots of good advice here, from actual racers. you are on the right track by asking questions, but think of it this way... the record you have pointed out may be soft but the build cost for a blown fuel engine would be high, (even for 500cc's) not to mention tuning it, and perhaps by the time you have built the lakester, someone may have put the record at its proper MPH as well.... i dont know what a blown fuel 500cc motor in a lakester should do. the advice i have is the advice iam applying to myself and seems to be working so far... although everyones skill levels are different. build a car for fun and learning, learn the ropes and break your lakes cherry.... perhaps you can then start thinking about records. would this be a cooperative effort where the cost is spread a**** a few people or will the burden be on your shoulders? are you financially capable of building a 200mph car? although, im building a 32 tudor to run **F/VGALT and im not rich by any stretch of the imagination.. go for it!
Quite correct. The salt can be tricky. Traction is iffy and especially as the wind resistance intensifies at higher speeds. It isn't as easy as "this car will do 200"...even the logistics of getting there, getting your gear there, having everything you'll need, and having no gremlins. I was a Sidewinder, now a Rod Rider. Now if I could just find the time to work on the Bonneville Indian Chief...
The concept is to get cleaner air and avoid the turbulent air coming off of the grill. So far the scoop appears to be a bust. The truck has made it's fastest run with the air cleaner peeping out of a hole cut in a spare hood. Mike
like you said speculation only. The motor is already built and dynotuned to bolt onto a stock snowmobile setup. already propels the sled to about 110 on snow. based on my dirt track experience I would guess that 140hp will get you 120-140. believe me, if I was closer to utah I would already be there. I even have the bellytank already.....
The ONE thing about Bonneville is; No matter if yer going there to race, or to watch; once you've been there - Ya never get the "salt" out of yer blood!!
The only way I am gonna be going 200 mph in any car I currently own is if it is dropped out of the back of a plane @ 60,000'...
