clark all your gonna need is the ac, a hat to cover your bald *** head, and a set of blue blockers sungl***es. my dad has a set of the gl***es looks like something a blind man would wear
I kinda like the asymetrical bubble.. kinda racy if the taller section was on the driver's side... very Manta rayish... http://www.streetrodderweb.com/milestones/0011sr_dean_jeffries_manttray/
Good Luck Clark !!!!!!!!! I used to drive Starbirds/Puhl's Electra/ Excel in parades and to shows. It was absolutley unbearable in the sun light. There were wierd reflections all over the car from the chrome on the dash to the stick steering. The worst was the heat, the top magnified that to the point that I was just sweating bullets. We put AC in it and that helped a little but I still had to drive with the top about half way open just to be able to breath. That smart gl*** thing that Slade mentioned might work. Some of the window tint films might also work if they could be made to conform to the countors of the bubble. I will be anxious to see how you win this battle. BB
Bob..interesting! wish we could have talked more about this in Detroit. Thanks for the tips on reflections, din't really think about that. Hemi...yeh it ****s it didn't flow to the other side. Evel...don't worry my next one will be more on the styles of the RPU and the 32. The 34 roadster and it will be my keeper. Hemi & Gotgas...I think the Beatnik II was driven too but only at night. If the cooling and venting isn't enough we had some ideas for covering or tinting but we'd like to do it with a nice clear bubble. It's all a game to see what can be done. It must be drivable! Clark
CG...the bubble is about 3/8 thick. We should get some in progress pics on one of them. I'm gonna have a couple made once they get it right. Mule Farmer...Zombies drawing inspired this car. Clark
He ended up cutting the bubble top too though.. at least holes on the sides leaving an arch over the middle.
I have a pic of the BNB on 46 on the way between Paso and Bakersfield in the afternoon.... pretty warm. It did eventually crack and he trimmed it into a t-top of sorts. Haven't seen it in a while.... I would have a plexi shop make some 1 1/2 or 2" round holes in the lower rear to let air out...
We're building two cars at the same time. Jr is building a sorta normal channelled 32 roadster as a twin to mine. His frame is just about done. Mine will be just about the same. We've been cutting two of everything. Sorta makes things easy. Here's the pics of his. Clark
Only thing I can think of for venting would be a patient compartment venting set-up from a ambulance. You vent a cube ambulance pretty damn fast. Punch louvers in the deck behind the bubble and duct the car behind the seats. If you did something like T-bird buckets with a full console, the whole console could be the ducting, right out in plain view. If you do something like this, keep in mind these power vents are loud! Keep the motor as far from you as you can...... go over-kill on your AC too. These really move some air!
fiddy...I was planning on using buckets and doing a console like a 50's vette with the vent there. I thought maybe a heater/ac fan would pull the air out. Might have to check into that system you're talking about. The cowl vents are gonna be real cool. Gotta keep them a secret til it gets a little closer. I figure the cool air can come in there and get blown out the back. Clark
Yep It inspired me too. I have been working on some head light buckets with the 53 buick bezels on them. Zombies one of my favorite artist. I want to build most every thing he does from the tractor roadsters to bubble top and the one I cant look at enuff lately is the woody he posted a month or so ago. It allmost makes it harder Just when you think youve seen the coolest thing under the sun here come something even cooler than the last. I wish I had some of the drive that you guys have to get your projects done. I cant wait to watch this build. Mule Farmer...Zombies drawing inspired this car. Clark[/quote]
I wish you were closer..... I'd LOVE to get a look at this thing as its coming together. 50's vette style center would look sharp! Keep in mind that ambulances are s****ped daily! Cheap parts if you can find one in a yard!
Fiddy...I know where a couple are in yards. Hopefully it will go together quick. We're hoping for the Jalopy Showdown. Might be pushing it though. I've got a few odds and ends to finish up before I can go full bore on it. Clark
Looks like it's gonna be an awesome car, Clark. Have you given much thought to insulation? Lizardskin or Dynamat or sheets of Home Depot bubble stuff or...?
heat what heat ? drive you're lil bit o bubbly at night In daytime wear chrome helmets and reflective suits with remote coolers like a NASCAR driver suit.. OR swimwear and least sunscreen .... or bbq sauce... Set it and forget it! some cads and olds had a flow thru vent system ...big vents around the windshield....BIGGER VENTS AT REAR WINDOW NASA DUCTS WORK THIS WAY TOO .. prairie dogs use a system of the highest earthen mound entrance hole draws out the heat of the others when the wind blows over it.. so a set of caliopie pipes that draw out inside air our side vents on our 57 tbird work great annd you have a cowl vent on your deuce MAYBE ONE OF THOSE BIG SWAMP COOLERS ON THE ROOF/SIDE ...asymetrical is ok on your bubblishious ride the rear of the bubble should elevate a little at speed ... like a porsche wturbo wing m***ive vent across whole car starting at the grill...hood -cowl interior- deck ala 57 chev headlite venting good luck paperdog
Man! I can see that thing crusin' on Saturday night. Fire up a doobie and look like a futuristic Cheech & Chong!
after further review if the bubble why can't a louvered piece of aluminium be added... kinda like adding a chese grater ... heck i bet you could figure out plastic louvers molded right in paperdog
Gary...The car will get insulated sorta by mistake. I'll be using foam to form up the interior. It might be 2 inches thick in places. The foam will be left in and sorta act like insulation. Paperdog...plastic louvers....interesting! Clark
Check around with shops that do home (not car) window tinting. 3m makes a clear heat and uv repeling film used in a lot of commercial applications. Not sure how "formable" it is, thoug.
Or, what about mounting/hinging the bubble at the front. You could then set the rear of the bubble on some sort of "stop-locks" to hold the rear of the bubble up at a desired height or have the bubble top closed. They use hinges like Im thinking of for furniture. Flip a latch one way, and the lid is held open 2". Flip it the other, and its closed. I wish I could remember the name of the hinge style...... I havent worked in furniture manufacturing in many moons! If the name comes to me, I'll PM ya!
just read Big Daddys Roth's Car 's last nite.. a couple had the separate windshields like you are suggesting.. all his cars got smaller and smaller so they were easier to do.. ???are the f- 16 canopies tinted ... maybe with a uv protection ... metallic coating... so they can do the heads up gauge thingie. they have the nasa ducts (top fuelers use these too) what about a inner shade like a older jet helmet where the shade retracts...(back to thr future ) yours done in wedge sections that fit inside each other and hide towards the rear.. tambour door like/Fabrege egg stlye.... ? how about a aluminum bubble that has clear sctions??? or a giant lcd controled shade? good luck paperdog
on the same thought you could do a latch mounted to a acuator so the bubble top could be run open any where fro 0-12 inches.
I think with Beatnik II Roth had little vents the whole way around the bubble. Sorta giving it that 1" raised effect. I'm definately latching it in the back. I'd be afraid of it turning into a parachute if it opened in the front. You guys are all adding great ideas and info. UV coatings would be the most interesting. Clark
uv coating film should be a able to be vacuum formed over / in the bubble wow... die cut flamed window tint ... bronze with silver tips the shape of the flame would allow the licks to be closer together to conform to the curve i was always gonna do the window tint flames in my 55 tudor pontiac wagon and tint front window solid next side window flamed and rear qtr window each lick would end in a horizontil stripe like a ambulance...dark /bronze /mirror and clear paperdog
