Beat up by a mechanic again!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldfart, Apr 11, 2007.

  1. I took the Belair to a garage that does everything including muffler work.I left a note on the seat saying that I want the exhaust to come out the back of the car and I want them to bleed the brakes. Everything in the brake system is new and I was unable to bleed it myself.(I spent last Monday & Tuesday in Cardiac Intensive Care Unit)I picked up the car & paid the bill($577).After I paid the bill I was told"Oh by the way, your master cylinder is no good, you only have back brakes,You'll have to get a new one and bleed the brakes..And the exhaust comes out in back of the tires instead of the way I wanted it..I am a little upset. What should I do??I am tryin' to stay calm but I am p%#@d.

No offense, but did you drop the car off on teh way to the hospital? If you couldnt stand there in person and tell them where you wanted the exhaust, then it is coming out behind the rear wheels is the back of the car. A lot of ppl dont realize that its not like that on these style cars, but it is on alot of 80s etc duals so cant blame em there.

Also if you didnt tell them everything was new etc on the brakes, I would imagine that they would call you before going further to let you know what the problem was, we always did at my shop. We would never send a car out on only the back brakes, that is nowhere near safe.

All in all I say the blame is 70/30 with them having the 30 only because they should have called (provided they had a number) and shouldnt have let it go out the door with only back brakes working.

Well you paid the bill, if a customer had specific instructions like that for me I would have communicated with them about it before any work got done.

Take it back. I don't know about your brake issue, but you should at least get you exhaust done how you wanted it...

    then beat him up.... :)

uhhh bullshit... the back of the car is the "back of the car"
no way to confuse that, they merely took the easy way out.

  9. I'm not taking sides here, but NEW doesn't always mean it's GOOD. It is possible the MC is bad. So, it sounds like the jury's still out on that one until the brakes are fixed. And i agree that the exhaust is coming out the back of the car. If you didn't tell them exactly, ............. Also, have you asked them to move the tailpipes? What they say?

Uhh, thanx man. Pretty sure I know where the back of the car is...just trying to rationalize a mistake in communication. Customer leaves a note, not even explaining in person, then comes in, pays, takes car, then bitches? Thats backwards. Before money is exchanged it should have been explained.

Besides, these are general repair places, not custom car builders right? Try dropping your car off at Pep Boys or the like with a note on the seat. They think the car is a UFO.

i guarentee they pushed the brake pedal too far down and ruined the seal in the m/c,thats why they say you need a new one,as far as the exhaust,go back and tell them you said the back of the car,not the side, stay calm at first, then if they get nasty, tell them you'll see them in court.

You're old, you're sick, you shouldn't give a good damn what anyone thinks. Next time, raise hell all over the place when you get there!
And, don't drop cars off to have work done with notes on the seat or under the wiper. Always, always, have a good conversation and explain EXACTLY what you want, and have it written up EXACTLY that way on the Work Order so they know what you want and you know that they know. Communication and documentation save both parties from grief.

Go in the shop and raise Cain. Then, have a "cardiac event". You will probably get their attention. Seriously, if you gave instructions on the exhaust, it should be made right. On the brakes, they are screwing you. They should not have spent any time working and "fixing" something thay knew would never be right. Go get a new M/C and tell them they owe you another brake job.

I'd take it back and have them run the exhaust as you specified in writing at no additional charge.

As far as the brakes...They probably did as instructed. It didn't fix your problem but they did what you asked for. Is that their fault? If you asked for a diagnosis, you might have avoided paying twice.

I would say its both your faults for not getting it right. 1 you just left a note 2 he didnt wait to talk to you about what you wanted. Theres no way hes going to eat the bill on this and I doubt your going to eithe. just take this as a lesson and go somewhere else

No problem... :D Even a general repair place should understand the difference. or call if they don't, they were just to lazy to run it over the rearend. slack, slack, slack...

No your wrong! heres the deal Im a hairstylist and you have to be very carefull with understand someone with what they want. People can come in and tell me they want their hair cut over their ears! well guess what that can be two completely different ways. One could mean up over my ears and the other could mean covering/over my ears! the back of your car is about 4 feet wide right? also the back of the car wraps around to the back tires thats alot of room to put pipes! now if you just tell the guy I want my pipes coming out of the back! Well where at in the back? do you want them close together under the lisense plate? maybe behind the tires?

theres a wide range here he shouldnt have left a note unless it was fully detailed not just "bleed the brakes and put the exhaust out the back"

also Oldfart paid the bill and left without saying anything. If i was the shop and he brought it back now I would think he just didnt like the placement and wanted something else. well oldfart should pay the bill to fix it.

"out the back" doesn't even come close to "out the side"
wether it's in front of or behind the tires. I'm sorry all you can try to relate is cutting hair, but if I came in a said take some off the back and you cut the sides, you'd be wrong...

did the exhaust need to be done from the manifold back? what mufflers and how many? Stainless?

Seems like 577$ is a lot for an exhaust job without cats or flowmasters and what not.....

Hey dude, I think you are reading this wrong thats your problem.

He says it comes out behind the rear wheels, NOT infront. That would tell us that they came over the axle, just dumped to the side instead of straight back.

Never, ever pay until the work is right. I'm not sure if I agree with the note or not, but it really doesn't matter - they took the job - if I was doing the work and had a question I think picking up a phone isn't all that difficult.

Yup, you should have said "I want these tips, coming out right here...coming out at this angle...sticking out this far...

Why were the brakes being bled -- was there some braking issue you were hoping that would correct?
