Don't you hate it when you think you made the find of your life only to find out the owner of all this junk thinks the steel is gold.
I found out about a stash of about 30 cars kept inside a huge steel building outta the weather. Everything from 51 mercs to a 32 Roadster (older restoration), a nice 29 sedan with a neat old fifties interior, a nice 30 coupe, 4 shoeboxes, a 50s porche, etc, etc.
I make the proper phone calls, find out "Sure, Everything is for sale"
I'm in heaven, and I go over meet the old fella and find out he's a distant cousin and all and I think I'm in. After alotta reminiscing and so on I make him a generous offer on the 30 coupe( Everything is there but reality is that the body is the only thing useable). He looks at me like I'm a freaking alien and lets into me about how this is a very rare and fine collectable automobile. I tell him a little about the current asking prices for these cars and I get a diatribe about how "The JEWS are the people that write all those car guides." At this point I knew the deal was over. I watched him turn the lights off on my little goldmine and havent heard anything since.
I'm keeping tabs mind you. I know his son and He's a reasonable guy who could care less about cars.
Darn JEWS and their conspiricy to scoop up all the old Fords for themselves!
    Anybody have a similar experience.

Everytime someone asks "what's my car worth" on this page, the answer that ALWAYS comes up is "whatever you get for it". They are his cars, he has the right to ask whatever he wants,,, you have the right to pay or walk away. Every week, I get someone that drove through my alley coming around front asking me if this or that car is for sale. When I say no, the overwhelming response is,,, "but you aren't doing anything with them". So ****in what, I'm not doing anything with the dog turds either, feel free to grab those.

Isn't there some law that if you are going to post a story like this, you should mention the prices offered/asked otherwise it's all a pointless waste of time?

That's true that he can set his own asking price. It's just that I think we've all heard the tragic story of the old man whose cars went to the crusher because he wouldn't sell or fix any of 'em.

He's wrong, it's the communists that are driving down the prices of his stash of old cars. They have a special secret list of names and he's on the list. It is his duty as a citizen to keep all prices high and not give any good deals to relatives no matter how distant.

The fact it's gold-priced is exactly why guys like that have such a large collection. Otherwise the last 20 guys who asked woulda hauled it all home. Quite simple really.

Huh? I think he was relating the story of the OLD MANS opinion. "You're a bigot" is quit a jump in this instance.

Yeah, you really gotta tell us what you considered a reasonable offer.
The fact that you offered money for the "A" and then said "everything is there but the reality is the body is the only thing usable" makes me wonder--is it complete but the only thing usable to a HOT RODDER is the body, or would a restorer be able to use a lot more.
Honestly, I gotta think that if the car has been in doors for as long as you said, and it's complete, it's not going to be a screaming bargain.
I'd really be interested in what you offered. The reality is, without pics of the cars, 7K might be a fair price, and he was insulted when you offered him $1500.
Hell, what's he want for the '32 Roadster?!

    DUH ...

Why do you think the man has 30 cars in a big building ...
IF ... his prices were below market value ...
his building would be empty ...

IF they are inside ... they are out of the weather and are not deteriorating ... they are appreciating in value. :D

That guy had better get his conspiracy's straight. I know a few Jews, and none of them care about fixing the prices of old cars. Maybe I'm just not looking close enough.

  23. Hell ive tried to get a 30 model a coupe from this guy close to my house, its completely taken apart and the frame and body are outside of his shed,I offered him $2.000 for the car and he proceeds to tell me he had the original 4 banger rebuilt not to long ago,I asked him when and he said about 15 years ago, anyway its a basket case for a car with lots of potencial but he told me that that same car is going for $6.000 on egay,I told him that that was for running cars not des***emble ones with a 15 year old rebuilt mototr that would need to bo gone through again so I obviously didnt get the car and it still sits there 2 years later untouched.

The thing that gets me is you made an offer and he declined it. Where was his counter offer? The guy knows what he has in it and by declining your offer he obviously knows what he wants for it. Yet you still have to play a guessing game with him and be belittled by his comments. **** him and move on. Theres plenty more cars out there. I absolutely despise the "Make me an offer" angle...

Maybe I'm wrong but if you make an offer and its declined the next step is for the other party to counter offer...

^^^ i kinda agree about the offer/counteroffer thing, but if someone isn't even close I wouldn't bother either.

Play the old guys game. You have to figure out what it is. I sold cars for 9 years and you had to do the opposite. You had to figure the person out.

Don't give up. Call him. Talk **** with him. B.S. him. Throw a couple offers on something else he has. Try and buy a part or something first.

If nothing else, sooner or later he will die and you'll want to be there.

They are his cars, he can set any price he likes. Find out what he wants for them or one in particular. Umm, by the way... they really are like gold... they don't make em any more, 'cept for copys and have you priced one of those?

  29. I agree...

A few years back I asked an old man about his '62 Starfire sitting next to his shed and he told me not for sale...
6 months later I went back to ask again and found his son had finished cutting the roof off, gutting the interior, and turning an otherwise 100% complete rust-free car into a f***ing B-B-Q.

    My advice:
    • Don't wait 6 months
    • It's usually worth spending more $$$ on the right car.
    • You'd better hope none of us find out where he is...:D

I ran into one of these guys once. We were dealing on a pile of parts. He thought the stuff was worth far more than the going rate. I think he was trying to impress me with what his stuff was worth - and rob me at the same time.

    I didn't bite. I didn't give up either.

I made numerous reasonable offers on parts & respectfully told him that I believed my offers were fair - & that I understood if he thought different.

7 months later the profits from that pile of stuff put a fine Deuce Fordor body in my garage.
