Hello All...Well, I'm planning on going to the Salt Flats to watch..Never been..Where can I stay,,thinking of renting a RV or motel..When in Aug.. Thanks Duane...
Im going this year also.. I have a stepdaughter in Ogden so ill be there and im gonna try and get a room closer for a night or 2 and drive down.. Dave
There are other threads regarding rooms in Wendover for Speedweek. Better get moving as there is a big golf tournament there the same week. Most old timers reserve rooms for next year as they leave Speedweek.
As far as I know you may as well forget reserving a room during Speedweek. If you get there on Monday or later you should be able to find a room. Plenty of people camp at the bend in the access road a few miles from the pits.
Going to the BSFs is a goal of mine too. I want to go within the next couple years. I was thinking about driving the truck out but, I think it would be too much and too long. Anywhere in the US is along way from South Texas. Takes a day and a half just to get out of Texas. The second method I thought about was maybe an RV. I'd have to rent or buy one. Might be the most expensive method. Next option would be to fly out. Probably the least "fun" method of choice with air travel such a h***le and the limited mobility on the ground. If there are no hotel rooms available I guess I'd sleep in the rental car. No way, I'm not twenty anymore and sleeping in a car in the desert, in the summer...no way. Hum...am I missing anything here?
If you start looking today, you might just find an available reservation in Grantsville or Tooele, they're both about 65 miles from Bonneville. I'm in Salt Lake and usually make two or three trips out every year. 112 miles in the '37 goes by quick. Be sure not to miss the Hopup weenie roast at the bend in the road on Monday night. Also, like someone said, there's plenty of free RV camping at the bend. If you must have a room in Wendover, you better get hooked up now for 2008. . .
One thing you may be missing is the World Of Speed meet in September. Not as many cars. Rooms can be had. You can run your street car. Look up the USFRA web site.
Going again this year too, only missed one since 99 so far. Going to do it different and drive out this year, take a car trailer or dolly along and maybe find something rustfree to bring back. uses up more days driving what what the hey?, it's vacation. May visit some yards along the way, have to dig up all my old Cars and Parts to find some good ones along the way. About looking for rooms for 2008, I don't think anyone takes reservations until the first of the year. Any other Michigan folks going?
I'm leaving Livonia Friday Aug 3rd at 4pm and heading west in my 1947 Olds convert. Siteseeing and hooking up with HAMB folks along the way. Will arrive in the Weddover area on that Thursday, the nite before tech starts. Ratster is having a HAMB BBQ that nite then into Wendover. Like the others have said, reserve one year in advance BUT if you're a last minute Joe you MIGHT be able to cop a cancellation a day or two before Speed Week starts if your LUCKY.
Everyone needs to experience Speed Week. But World of Speed gives you a whole different perspective - and it's interactive. Check out the "Salt hero shirts are ready" thread - my take on doing B'ville on the cheap... Either way, you'll get burnt and blasted, but will come back for more next year - the very definition of insanity, right?
if its bikes ya want, there is a bike only event. http://www.speedtrialsbybub.com/2007_event/index-2007.html AMA national records, true WORLD records certified by the FIM. Ya might even see the worlds fastest motorcycle run, or a challenge for that record.
Hello All..What is the "BEND"..What is the actual start day 12th of Aug.. If I were rent a RV would I find a place to park, that would be fun.??? Duane..
This is a pretty good site for general information. http://www.roadsters.com/bonneville/#Links Another place for some information http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Bonn_main.html John
Be aware that SLC rental companys know what is going on. Your rental agreement will say "No off road driving" They will look for salt and charge hundreds of dollars if you come back with salt in and on your rental
Not always. Call "Rent-a-Wreck"; (in Salt Lake City) he is a "hot rodder", will pick you up at the airport, and return you too. (if your lucky, - and alone - he might pick you up in his '32 Coupe!!) All he asks is that you give the car a GOOD cleaning before you return it. (inside and out, especially under the fenders) BTW - it's "BONNEVILLE." P.S. - Denise, so far so good!
I'm planning to stay at the Bend in the Road, hopefully I can pick up a last minute cancellation at one of the hotels. I guess I should get cracking on the ElCamino so I have something new to drive out.
The Bend (AKA "Roads End") is just a bend in the little access road that runs out to the salt, from the freeway. Free camping and all night bench racing, sometimes with celebrity appearances - Ed Roth used to be a regular. Be sure to bring your suit of armor, for when they break out the fireworks (tradition is to burn a magnesium VW block on the bonfire) - yeow! Never got a wink of sleep there, but always had fun...
Sleep is available a few hundred yards up the road going west. Attend the party then move west to sleep...or not. Be ready for radical temp changes with the weather, it can get quite cool at night or even cold if it rains. Winds can come up that will move your tent to the next county along with scary *** lightning & sometimes hail. Be prepared for anything is what Im saying, it changes in a hurry too
I plan to camp at the Bend in a tear drop camper (with a/c!), is there any way else to "traditionally" do Bonneville? : ) I'll be in HRLC's shower line...
We have the Motorhome rented and the vacation time booked - staying at the bend in the road also - My first time out. We'll throw another mag on the fire.
