Three p51s and a b25 just flew over my house at no more than 500 feet headed south.... Man, that sounded cool...
The ole' 909!!!!! The only time I ever got a wake turbulence warning I landed behind it!!! The original nose art is hanging where it was restored near Pittsburgh, PA. That B-17 was restored where I used to fly at Beaver Falls airport west of Pittsburgh. There's a little restoration facility there called Air Heritage that has had in various stages of restoration just about any warbird you can think of! I did some work on what will be the only airworthy Douglas A-20 there. But back to the 909.....one year at the Beaver County airshow the 909 went off the end of the runway and was repaired at Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics where I'm going to school now. Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, the P-47 ace was from just north of here too. Lots of cool airplane stuff around Pittsburgh! BTW a book called "Thunderbolt" is some good reading if you're into P-47's! Johnny
I love planes...Especially "my" C-130's! Bet you've never seen one ready to pick up the wounded soldiers...a whole different monster... -Jolene
I don't know what it is about "trash haulers." For some reason, while everyone else is oohing and ahhing over fighters, I gravitate to the bombers and cargo planes. I just got done reading a couple of books about Spooky. AC-47s and AC-130s are just nasty. I would love to see a C-47 done up like that at an airshow some day.
There's two on display in the Ft Walton area - one at the Hurlburt Air Park the other at the AF Armament Museum just outside nearby Eglin AFB - the on on display at the Armament Museum was the first production C-130A & dubbed the First Lady...
Kevin's Essex is named Azreal after one of the Spectre AC-130 gunships stationed at his airbase during Desert Storm.
you can. http://squadron14.com/...and I'm sure they'd appreciate your donation to keep it in the air (they lunched an engine last year$$$$$).
Just happened to be looking out the window and just saw the Collings Foundation B-24, B-17 and B-25 touchdown at Long Beach Airport. They are supposed to be parked over on the west side at the Signature Air facility on Spring Street. If you get a chance, go take a look.
Pardon me for jumping in here, but I have a GE Turbosupercharger from a P-38 Lightning sitting in my garage. I would like to find a good home for it. Is there any one reading this thread that might be interested or know of someone interested in acquiring this unit? JB 472
If you aren't into making money and what it to go to a good home, might want to donate it to a museum that needs it. I'd think it cool if I saw a restored 38 and knew that my turbo was in it. The Eaa is were I'd start.
My buddy at the CAF sent me pics of the B-24 rolled outside for the first time in 8 months, to run up the engines. My Dad leaves for Texas on Friday and the unveiling is Saturday. It looks killer. I'm excited to see the pics outside with the nose art! http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c60/retroaviation/B-24A/B-24A-2/IMG_0894.jpg So after Saturday, I'll be able to post lots of pics.
[quote So after Saturday, I'll be able to post lots of pics.[/quote] Looking foreword to finally seeing your work. The perseverance and persistence that Gary (and his helpers) has shown on the B-24 & B-29 should be inspiration to all of us that are undertaking major projects.
Up here in BC we get treated to a couple of warbirds, that are still in use.The 2 remaining Martin Mars flying boats being used for waterbombing.

As always, every film on our web site is showing for free. This month At the Matinee, youll see a new film premier, 354th Fighter Group Color Scrapbook, featuring top P-51 aces in living color; Thunderbolt (color) the rock em sock em P-47 fighter/bomber classic; Combat America, (color) Clark Gables tribute to the B-17 crews of the 351st BG; and Bombers over North Africa, where B-17s and B-25s of the 97th & 321st BGs strike the retreating Afrika Korps. 354th Fighter Group Color Scrapbook Drive-In Premier -- Exclusive! Rare color film of the legendary 354 Fighter Group, with over 700 Kills, the highest scoring American unit in Europe. Youll see great aces like G. T. Eagleston and the amazing B.W. Carr at work and at play in their newly captured base in Germany in Spring, 1945. Nice scenes with the groups well known P-51Ds too, including Margie Maru and Angels Playmate. This was the first group to fly P-51s in the ETO, so they were known as the Mustang Pioneers. Thunderbolt! A Drive-In favorite! This exciting film chronicles the exploits of the P-47 Thunderbolt pilots of the Fighting Gamecocks, 65th Fighter squadron, 57th Fighter Group. Based on the island of Corsica off the northwest coast of the Italian boot, they flew from behind the enemys flank. As part of Operation Strangle, they attacked highways, bridges, ammo dumps, railroads and just about anything that moved. This film not only features one-of-a-kind P-47 combat footage, it also shows day-to-day life on a MTO forward airbase, including vintage pilot slang. This has to be finest combination of great photography, a hard bitten, realistic script, stirring music, powerful narration and full bore Pratt & Whitney R-2800-59W Double Wasp radial engine roar I have seen or heard in a World War II documentary. Truly memorable and highly recommended. Zeno Clark Gables Combat America This warm hearted documentary was produced, written, directed, and narrated by movie star Clark Gable while he was on assignment with the 8th Air Force, developing a gunnery training film. Though it contains plenty of combat footage and doesnt flinch in showing the high cost of war, in many ways, its more of a Kodachrome album than a war information film. Gable chronicles the experiences of the men of the 351 Bombardment Group from the morning mists of Colorado to the frigid skies over Germany. His affection and admiration for these men comes through loud and clear. Though he doesnt mention it (and generally keeps in the background) Gable flew combat missions with the Group until he was ordered to stop by the brass. He was 42 and a Hollywood star, but he felt he couldnt accurately portray the air war unless he shared the experiences of the men who fought it. He did. It shows. Bombers Over North Africa This is a rare look at early war US Air Operations in North Africa. B-25 and B-17 bombers of the 321st and 97th Bomb Group help cut off Rommels retreat from Tunisia. Part of the North West African Strategic Air Force, these groups were initially tasked with preventing men and material from reaching the Afrika Korps, and later with preventing them from escaping. The missions for the day of this film were to strike from bases in Algeria at the junction at Manouba and the air field at Sidi Ahmed, where a large number of JU 52 transports were based, a vital element in German evacuation plans. This film is notable for its up close and personal look at the aircrews. Youll see real pre-mission and after action debriefing sessions with the men who flew them, including one B-17 crews account of an FW 190 shoot down and the water ditching of a heavily damaged B-25. If you havent stopped by Zenos Drive-In before, we also feature 1940-45 vintage WWII Army & Navy films and pilots manuals on how to fly the F4U, F6F, P-38, P-39, P-40, P-47, P-51, P-61, TBF/TBM, AT-6/SNJ, B-17, B-24, B-25, A-20, A-26, B-26, B-29, and Stearman N2S .
