ok, so on the way home from school I ran over a nail in my Plymouth Sundance, and now I have a flat tire (got the doughnut on there now, yuck!!!) how should I go about fixing it??? I can either go to Wal-Mart and buy one of their plug kits (at 10% off, cuz I work there!!!) or take it into weber tires down the road and get it fixed??? I have about $15 to my name now, and am wondering what route would be better!

  2. Don't let it suffer. You'll have to shoot it, 'cause it's lame.

Got to the car department in Walmart, or even a real parts place--get the tubeless tire plugging kit. This is a screwdriver shaped rasp thing to scrub out the nail hole, another tool with an eye in the blade, and a few rubber stips. Clean well, read instructions and follow carefully, ram one of the rubber things into the hole and reinflate. Cheap, and you still have strips for the next several nails...

Just put a plug in it and see if it holds air. If it continues to leak, you're gonna need a new tire (or at least, a different tire).

You could also go to the junkyard and probably buy a rim with a tire on it already mounted and balanced off of a wrecked Sundance for the $15 if you're not confident in the plug kit.

Easy fix. Buy the kit and you'll be ready next time you get a flat.

Didn't notice this was a sundance---keep the nail, scrap the other stuff.
Actually, there's lots more you can do at the $5 level if plugs are inadequate...I did some amazing repairs of horribly ripped rubber when I couldn't afford a new one. Next step will be the "Witch's Hat" plug and the really fun job of R&Ring a tubeless radial with tire irons...

R&R ing is easy.. Let the air out and drive on the tire to break it from the rim.. Once its broke loose get some of mom's dishwashing liquid and plaster the shit on the tire . Get a couple of big screw drivers and pry it off. I know he doesnt have tire irons cause he dont have a plug kit.. Fix or replace tire then go in and make dentist appointment to repair broken tooth from screw driver. Make mental note that shit happens while dismounting your rubber :)

Hey, it's OK for young people--there are lots of people nowadays who have never had a flat. I've fixed plenty, but I don't think I've had one in 15 or 20 years. Modern tires are damn good, and many people will wear out set after set and never get a flat.
However, he officially losses all cred points if he had to call a filling station to get the donut on...

The Discount Tire stores around here will fix flat tires for free, zip, zero, nada. They do it so you'll come buy your next tires from them.
Give them a shot if there's one near you.

Skajaquada, thanks for the help yesterday. Dylan and I got his F-100 fired up last night. He was really excited to hear it run!

Call your insurance company, its most likely totaled...

Dont waste your money on the straight handled plug kit. I know its a few bucks cheaper but when it breaks (guaranteed) you'll be buying the "heavy duty" T handled one anyway. Plug it and take the kit back to walmart and tell them it didnt work. They'll take anything back...especially of you work there

There hasn't been a "filling station" that would change your tire for you around here in probably 30+ years. I can't think of a single place that sells gas and fixes cars in the same building, unless you're counting big truck stops on the highway.

So the guy got a flat and he ain't got the money for a new tire. I don't think we gotta beat his head in over it. Happens to everyone once in a while, you gotta learn how to fix it sometime.

yes, I know its very sad that i admit to owning that lame ass sundance, but at leats its not a toyota or honda or somthing like that shit! I changed it myself without any problem and even found a beer rolling around it the spare compartment. Its not that i have never had a flat tire before, i just wanted to know if the plug would be worth the effort. yes walmart takes almost anything back, and i could care less if people are ripping walmart off, as long as I get my paycheck! now if I was driving a sundance around that had a fart can, clear taillights, and a wing fit for a B-52, THAT would be lame. its only my daily driver untill I can get a Grand Prix with the 3.8 as my daily driver. at leat i can still beat hondas and toyotas with the sundance too (of course the 4.09" stroke helps me with the torque aspect), so at least its not totaly gay, and its reliable. I just wish I never got rid of my '87 dodge W-250, but the 10 mpg was killing me.

I guess only idiot teenagers build hot rods and other cool shit insted of hanging out with ricers. of coures, then again, only a real idiot teen would be going to get their degree in mechanical engineering, and then open their own Rod and Custom shop. I guess your right, i am and idiot teenager!

I know quite a few people who would be wasting their breath asking their parents for advice..................cuz even dear old dad knows precisely dick about how to fix a car outside of call AAA or a tow truck. It's becoming a fact of life these days.

Is mounting and dismounting a radial really that difficult? I always though I was just doing something wrong! I have changed them with what most people call a "tire iron", that hockey stick thing you use for a handle on the bumper jack. Got a proper set of tire irons now......................but I still break beads with a Hi-Lift.

I've had people tell me you can't plug a radial. Done it. Been told if a plug don't do it, you're screwed..............I just put 2 plugs in the same hole after running over an errant fender bolt. Drove the car for a year that way! Daily driver 25 miles each way to work 6 days a week.................then put the tires on my next cheap ass driver for another year!

Learn to fix it man! If ya got nothing that needs to be fixed, break some shit! Then you'll learn to fix it.

I would agree, most peoples dads dont know shit about anything car related. I'm just a lucky little baster, because if my dad wasnt into hot rods or building a '38 chevy 2 door sedan deluxe with a 348 chevy outta '59 Impala, I wouldnt know how to to anything. maybe thats why i took off all the cabinet handles in the kitchen when I was 3 and then put them back on!

Radials, especially if rusted to rim, can be real bastards to dismount and mount with hand tools--ain't no stretch in that bead, and I did one that held up an Impala at the top of the jack I was using to break loose the bead for two hours til it popped...
Hand tire irons in place of a tire machine are really from the days of tires that stretch.
I once fixed a radial that had a four inch rip in the sidewall with a whole row of overlapped witch hats and a radial tube--all against reasonable rules of fixing, but it was a new tire and I couldn't even afford a junker to replace it.
The tire went close to 40,000 miles, and when I threw it away it had worn down to steel with that desperate repair still holding.
