Just wanted to send a prayer to the families that lost their homes and possibly loved ones in the recent KS tornadoes. Hope it wasn't anyone we knew. I got sent this link today that shows how levelled the town was - the trail is two miles wide. http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/050507tornadoaerials/ Car related - looks like some folks lost their cars.. My house was hit years ago and my heart just sunk when I heard about the damage. Any HAMBers in town?? Let me know what I can do to help. Happy Trails, Mick
I can't make out the cars, tri 5 chevy and a mopar, like you said cuda or challenger maybe. Sad day in Kansas. I grew up there and it happens all the time. A town not far from Corpus was wiped out here in Texas a few years ago. Other Kansasans remember the Derby tornado years ago. You're lost for words to see a whole town wiped off the face of the map. These people need a lot of help. Were there any HAMBers in that town, anyone near there know anything? This is bad, real bad.
The good ol government is doing their part to mess it up as well. two of my co-workers grew up there and their folks still lived there. Going to help, getting into town itself was a major ordeal with lines waiting to get into and get out of town. They are not allowing trailers in town so they had wait to take a pickup in (around 4 hours!), wait to drive it out of town to take it to a trailer five miles to unload, and then try to get back in. trying to stop looters is one thing but this is rediculous (sp). As it was, the officials did not let residents back in for several days. It rained bigtime in between ruining a fair bit of what many hoped to salvage. A tough situation all around.
Hey Stray Kat.. Greensburg is about 30 miles west of me... I don`t know of any HAMBers; but there were a few nice cars there...
Your info is all wrong - they have been able to get in every day, but had to leave at curfew, when other tornado laden storms were coming, or lightning was in the area. Also - trailers were allowed starting today. Further - there will be no more bulldozing, no officials allowed on private property, and Hiway 54 (the main thru 4-lane) is closed 5 miles each way because clean-up of the area continues. There is an AM radio broadcast set up just for Greensburg residents info (out and in), and help is coming in every hour from other Kansans and corporate donations. Greensburg's recovery has begun in earnest!
Sunday my friend Robin and her folks had to wait 6 hours to get in because of governer Sebelius. They kept telling the folks in the line to get in, "just another hour". Sunday She and her father made it in in only 40 minutes but her mom and sister waited in the incoming line for nearly 4 hours. Sure it's been open every day but it's been a PAIN. Yes I know trailers are allowed in today. A long time to wait since the tornado, don't you think? Since Highway 54 has been closed five miles out each way, that's how far folks have been parking their trailers. I'm not saying the recovery isn't happening. I'm saying the zeal of the government doesn't always work out best for the victims.
My prayers are with them..... It gives Me chills to think of finding myself in that situation. The officials have to control the entry and exit of the affected area, if they just let everyone loose there would not be any thing left for the residents to come home to.( remember the film of all the people floating stolen merch down the street in New Orleans)... And then someone would be complaining that the Gov did not seal off the area quick enough. The Mayor has been sleeping in the front seat of has truck (according to his statment on the radio yesterday) that is a serious commitment to has job. May God bless them and help them in their time of need.
My grandmother and aunt and uncle live in greensburg. They are all okay but both of there houses are gone. My uncle had a 2 car detached garage that he stored a model a in and also a 41 ford, both of which he bought while he was in high school 35 or 40 years ago. He sold me the model a last year at this time and I brought it home a year ago. The part of the garage the model a was in is completely gone and the 41 ford has the rest of the garage on top of it. I was there around 8:30 saturday morning after the tornado hit and the devistation is unbelivable. I have been going to this little town for 40 years and it took me awhile to just find there homes because I couldn't tell one street from another. I am going back on friday morning to continue the digging out process.
three or four cops got caught looting - sumsabitches. Go eat at a Kansas Pizza Hut Thursday (tommorrow) night, they are donating 20% of sales that night to Greensburg.
just saw pictures today of the mayors 32 ford pick up/rod with his garage collasped around it and a vw, his wifes new t-bird and their daily driver. he a good ole boy car guy
Actually it was 4 Nat. Guard soldiers from Junction City, 1 part-time sheriff from McPherson, and 2 idiots who dressed up as Red Cross volunteers. The 4 guard guys and the cop were stealing liquor and cigarettes from the destroyed stores. They're all gonna do time, and soon! Their hearing was today. By the way - the number of companies and people making donations is amazing!
I live in Augusta Ks and my neighbor's sister lives in Greensburg, or did. She finally found out that her sister is safe and ok! Its a tragedy that so many lost so much and I hope they all keep their faith and trust that all is NOT lost and thier lives will progress on. Its terrible that a tragedy of this magnitude is what is needed to bring the community and state together but all of the surrounding communities have banded together. President Bush was there today and they have announced that the schools graduating class will still hold their ceremonies amongst the rubble and debri.
