so i found a Borg Warner Super T-10, complete from hurst shifter to bellhousing. supposed to be in decent shape. (i have not physically seen it yet) the guy wants 450$. he told me to make an offer, so i turn to the trusty hamb.

(this would be going behind my 292 in my '53 chevy)

first, is this trans worth it? i don't know a ton about them nor have a i seen alot of them either.
what would be a good price to pay for that ***uming it may need a rebuild?

    thanks.

  2. $450 is a pretty good price for a ST10 with everything.

Is it all aluminum, or does it have a cast iron main case? How many rings on the input shaft?

  4. Likely its a Z28 from mid seventies...I paid $500.00 for one from a 79 Trans Am with the shifter.Seller had the side cover off so I could inspect the gears and syncros. If its okay then its worth the $450.00

A new Richmond ST-10 will cost you over 1500.00. I was real happy to pay 400.00 (****** & shifter) for one with the 1st gear ratio I wanted!

my biggest problem is this guy apparently "can't" get me pictures of the insides and "hasn't looked at the gears" AND he wants a 100$ deposit "NOW" without me even going to look at it....just sounds weird.

i guess i just answered my own questions...hehe.

  8. One of my buddies recently just went down this road, but with a Muncie.

Paid $350 for what was supposed to be a good transmission. Turned out, even after looking at the gears before he bought it, that it was worn out. Was gonna' cost about $750 in parts and labor to fix it.

He bailed outa' the project and re-sold it for $325.

    These aren't a cheap date.

What's the bell housing worth, $50? Do the math.

yea, i just can't imagine paying 400+ for something i may have to turn around and rebuild and dish out more $$$$$ for....
    thanks for the input.

Believe me, if I was asking $450 for a transmission and you appeared to be genuinely interested in it, I could damned well find the time to back off the nine bolts that held the side cover on....unless, of course, I had something to hide.

    my point exactly!
actually he emailed me again and he seems more interested in giving me more info on it now. we'll see.
i'd wanna go see it in person first and check out the "guts".
i guess i'll just check it for worn and broken teeth.....i don't really know what else to look for....

Checking the gears is a good start - chipped or broken teeth are obvious.

Rotate the input shaft and "feel" for binding/grinding. Next wiggle the input shaft in-out as well as side-side - a little play is normal (very little) but excessive movement is not. Synchro ring to mating surface should have about a credit card's width when pushed towards gear - less and they're worn out and probably need replacement.

Actually if he holds off pulling cover until you're there - check the condition of the fluid - a fine bit of br*** is normal - silver is not, and chunks - well you ought to run...

When you check the gears look at the dog teeth on the side that engage the synchro. The main gear teeth are rarely worn out, but the dog teeth get worn down from speed shifting. If they are worn too far it can cause the trans to pop out of gear, or not engage at all. I'm not sure how far is too far by looking, but new will be a crisp point.

I just got a T-10 for $200.00, one of those the guy needed cash and came by my shop ... mine is an older unit so it has the 16 spline
output shaft , found one on e-pay
sometimes you get a deal , sometimes you get "such a deal "

  16. There is a huge difference between a ST10 and a T10.

That one in the pictures looks like a 77' model year unit, most likely from a Z28 or similar. It should be a 2.64 first gear and its in an aluminum case. That is a good trans if the guts are not worn out or busted.

i could be wrong, but last night i ran the numbers and it came out as out of a corvette.
but we'll see. i'm supposed to go out there and check it out and see what it looks like inside....
    thanks.
