you want to BLOW UP MY CAR?

  1. WOOPTY WOOP UPDATE LAST PAGE!!

Im more of a lurker on these forums than anything else. But I think that most of you would feel me on this one:

I work in television production- im often around the studio and sometimes you feel like money is flowing in the air- from the expensive food that everyone eats to the million dollar drop cloth of the los angeles skyline they have in a studio bigger than all our shops put together. so anyhow, this setup leads to something.

A few weeks ago i decided to put my 50 buick super 4dr sedan back on the road. I got the car from a fellow hamb'r. i drove it to a all buick show in the hills of glendale with my girlfriend. aparently there was a guy there who saw it and really liked it.. he got my number from a friend of mine and called me. he asked if my car was for sale and how much i wanted. i told him and he said he like to come take a look.

he gets here, i start it up and drive him around the block, hes looking at it and realizes its a pretty straight car. he gives me an offer, an ok one. i wanted some time to mull it over so i started making some small talk. i asked him why he wanted the car. he said it was going to be in a movie... i dont want to leak anything but its going to be the 4th instalment of a popular action movie. aparently this guy is looking for 4 of them that dr. jones.. i mean the actors will have a car chase with. aparently they want to pack the car with explosives, and roll it down a football field somewhere.

when he said "roll" i thought he meant like drive it on a football field or something...no like "roll as in... flip...destroy...kill...blow up" my stomach tightened up and i reached for my cigarettes.

we talked a little more and i said that id call him, he gave me another offer. i said id think about it and give him a ring back

i came in the house and talked it over with my girlfriend and a few friends.. the general consensius was a big fat no. so its a 4 door, so its got fred flintstone floors so the paint is kinda fading. the chrome is great, the body is straight and its got a rebuilt motor and trans! its an original california car, its been on the road for 57 years. it doesnt deserve to be blown up.... go find a parts car and throw a 350 in it! fuck.

the story would have been a lot diffrent if someone wanted to give me that money if they had the intent to drive it and have fun with it. its not about the money- its about knowing that maybe somethings just shouldent get blown up and forgot about for a 3 second scene thats going to put millions in other peoples pockets.

its about history and its about me having to live with the fact that i turned over a perfectly good car to be blown up. i could stand up and scream in the theater when i see it get blown up "HEY THATS MY CAR" but no one would care/listen. whats the point.

what would you guys have done?

Big fat no! You got it right, the car has lasted too long to be sacrificed.

Money flows in the air huh........

I'd have doubled my price. Would likely chase him off, thus solving the problem. If he bit, I'd use the profit to save another car, thus evening out your car karma.

One way or another, a 50 buick will die. You're not stopping them by saying no.

Hell, if they want to blow one, let them make a model or full size mock up out of fiberglass or something. To much history getting destroyed for "entertainment".

That is a beautiful car. it deserves to die another way than being blown up in a movie. But you know what they say... money talks

If it's not your car, it'll be someone elses. And that may be an even cooler car. If he's willing to pay more than it's worth value and sentimental wise, sell it to him.

Not no, but hell no! that looks too good! Besides, with the money many movies budget they can destroy real collector cars w/o even thinking about it. :( The original Dukes of Hazard series destroyed 200-300 '69 Chargers.

  11. Thank god....2-300 less Chargers on this planet

With the budget these movies have, why can't they build a fiberglass replica, or better yet, computer animate it?!

I always get pissed off when movies destroy old cars. Why can't they destroy some crap from the 80's and 90's that no one wants?

  13. i dont know why they dont just find some rotting parts cars, paint them up and throw 350s in them... it would be easier to start with a car that has nothing... rather than a car with a rebuilt motor and original interior... its wasteful

if someone wants my car- go ahead make an offer... but fuck, if you buy it dont destroy it.

Are they gonna blow it up at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT?
Rumours floating around about a location shot here in CT. I think if I like a car, I would hate to see it die in a movie.
One of our surf bands just rented their VW bus out to a production company, some B movie with Wesley Snipes. Got good money, free camping gear (props) and they didn't mess it up.

This sort of reminds me of back when my ex-wife worked for the AK State Trooper dispatch. People would call 911 to report a moose or bear or some other critter stranded on the ice or stuck in the ice on the side of (or within sight of) the road. They would be so worried about the animal and the suffering because they could see it happening. They didn't wonder or worry about the any or all of the others that they couldn't see...

That being said, if he hadn't told you it was going to be blown up, would you have sold it to him? At least he was being honest with you when he told you his intentions about it. He coulda said it was going to be cherried out more and used as another show vehicle or some such crap.

That being said, you've got to go with what you feel here. Knowing his intentions, and only knowing he'll probably have to do a quickie repaint to match the other 3, I'd see if there's some negotiating room - i.e. swapping out the fresh motor for one that'll work, but isn't as 'perfect' as the one thats in it. I'd also bargain for a bit more money knowing this is one less that'll be able to be restored.

I wonder if you could get an option to buy all 4 when they are through DIRT CHEAP tossed into the deal, or as freebies when they are through.....

No idea if you've already done this, but why not post is in the classifieds here for the same amount? At least it will most likely go to someone that will appreciate it.

oh im sure i could find someone that would want it. 5500 isnt that much money when it comes to finding say... a 2 door 50 buick thats in any kind of running driving stopping shape. the thing is i didnt really even want to sell it. it was just sorta forced at me.

and sure- if any of you guys want to buy the car? offer me 5500 and promise me you arent going to blow it up.

if he had said he was going to just drive it around and fix it up- it would have been his.

he offered me the whole lot of all 4 of them after the crashes. yeah... sure... ill take 4 smashed up, burned, wrecked buick hulks... great fucking idea.

    Screw you Chris!!! :p :D hahaha!

If they were looking for (4) cars and yours turned out to be better than the others, I doubt they'da blow 'yours'......but it'd 'look' like it...

  24. What kind of a car guy thinks it's good to destroy classic V8 rear wheel drive performance cars?

  25. We need something to protect old cars, like they do animals, from un-necessary destruction in movies. When I watch Bonnie And Clyde, I don't really get broken up over seeing the 30s model cars get shot up; it's a good movie and essential to the story. Same for any quality period-piece film. But to destroy a classic car in a flick where the story is taking place in modern times, I just ask, "Why?"

It might just be the entrepreneur in me, but they'll give you $5500 for the car and then give you what's left of all 4 buicks when they are done? Certainly they aren't going to blow-up all 4! With what's left, I've got to think you could still build one car as a project, and have a lot of parts to keep/sell when you are through, and that might get more old buicks on the road. I've gotta think that if they are going to give anyone some clapped-out old Buicks, you are probably the best guy they are gonna get. If they are gonna trash 4 anyway, whether it's yours or someone elses, I might just have to go through with it! Besides, $5500 sounds like a pretty nice price to me for a more door '50 buick with no floor pans! You might want to rethink! Even if you don't want to "Save" what's left, think of what even the clapped-out "movie cars" might fetch on ebay. I know trashed remnants from the General Lee Chargers have fetched a LOT more than they are worth on there. Just something to think about...

You did the right thing bro. They can build their own. My budby works for Rob rodriquez production company, he told me his crew took 3 months to build that helicopter that got destroyed in grindhouse. Let those bastards spend countless hours hunting parts and cars !!!!!!!

  29. ive just been really soul searching this one. they actually offered me 6000 for it, but i still think that it doesent deserve it. its not a punk car. it does have floor pans in it, but the pass side is holy'r than a ghost. sure- i could find something else for 6 grand that would be pretty cool, but i was comparing it with my 58 cadillac today... i dont think any movie would be made where they roll a 58 cadillac down a football field. on fire.

first off- if i was to sell it, id sell it to someone who would enjoy it, drive it and most of all have fun with it. i dont have a problem with chopping this car either- just as long as its not blown to bits so spielberg and lucas' pockets get fatter. i guess it boils down to thinking with your heart or head. im def thinking with my heart on this one.

every time ive told the story today i always start it out with "someone offered me 6000 for my 50 buick" the response ive gotten so far is "HOLY SHIT TAKE IT" then i say "they are taking it to ct, packing it with explosives and rolling it down a field where it will be blown up" response : "fuck that"

    i think i made a good choice

At first, when I started reading the first post, I glanced over at the avatar of the poster and thought, "that would be a shame if they did that to that car"... then I read further until after the last sentence, I noticed the pic of the car what this is all about... And that's a DAMN SHAME if something like that would happen. Let them use CGI for shit like that!

I admire that fact you saved the faith of the car and didn't just go for the money.
