Hey! I've been gone awhile, trying to copy some of your guys great stuff. Let me know what you think! http://rides.webshots.com/album/559...cks&track_action=/Owner/ViewActions/FullAlbum
I started on one yesterday. Between this and the tech section here any dummy should be able to pull it off. Have you found anyone who repops fender patches?
What is the proper name for those sheet metal clamps in photo 35, and where do you get them? Looks good so far man, keep it up.
I want to know how high it sits when you are done (with the 3 1/2" space between the frame and cab floor) I gotta have mine slammed and I am not planning on dropped spindles.
Looks good!I just did the same with my sons 54 Didn't take but a few pics.worked well sits nice and low.Sits a little lower now with the bed and running boards http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u70/mikbox/100_5957.jpg
Good show... Makes it look too easy... Am hoping to start putting a '52 onto a modded 86 caprice frame in the next month or so... THAT could be interesting...
Nice job. I still have to finish the running boards on mine ,but it is a great ride. I have a little over 300 miles on mine since i finished about a month ago. This is the first day out of the garage after the swap.
Those clamps are called Intergrip clamps. I made a bunch up and I've only sold one set on e-bay. If your interested I'll sell you a set of 4 for $15 U.S. +shipping. Let me know. j_wyldwest@telus.net
soooo, what was the point of all that??? im totally serious, was your original frame rotted to **** or bent or......???
All I have to say is thank you. I've been working on one and it is just about ready for the frame, and your pictures said a million words for me so thank you once again.
my frame was damn near rusted in half in a few spots. i think i still would have used the s-10 frame if nothing was wrong with it. i guess the good thing about the swap is i will be driving mine shortly while some peoples pipe dreams never leave the garage...
it took us 3 days to get my buddys 52 chevy from the junk yard to zipping down the street... new brakes and a new motor. not bragging im just saying. 3 days compaired to all that......
What rearend are you guys using under the rearends of your trucks? We currently have 2 of these going and the s10 rearends are to narrow for the beds
s10 4x4 rear end is wider and will work. ford 8.8 rear from an exploder is a direct bolt in. for the front you need some 2" spacers to move the wheels/tires out to where they should be.
Wow.... I know of a straight complete 49 chev 1/2 ton 5 window p/u but the running gear and interior are totally shot.... now I'm thinking this is a do'able deal. My dad bought a gmc s15 with 70k original miles on it for $1100 at an auction a couple years ago. So $600 for 49 +$1100 for S15 = $1700.00 roughly 2/3 complete project..... something to think about tombat
im still trying to figure out why a BAD RUNNING GEAR AND INTERIOR = s10 frame.... i mean WTF look at this truck, we got it RUNNING IN 3 DAYS! you can put any 6 banger in them EASY! we put a damn 250 in it, and all the brake rebuild kits were from autozoo.. theres no need for all that work.... and its drives great!
I have a 1980 Camaro on mine..... bolts right in.... Truck drives straight as an arrow.. Power steering, disc brakes, auto trans, 350/350.. lot better than the 55 your old technology... good luck.. frame swap was about a week.. in my buddies garage... doing it part time.
Have a Willys on an S10 - looks similar. P/S courtesy of Speedway components. For motor mount about 2" x 3/8 flat plate w tube for factory motor mount bolt from top of frame rail. 3/8 triangular plate using the rear of lower control arm bolt for attachment and running up to 2' strap for additional support. Setback places the pulleys approx centerline +/- of x member.
You = ignorant. I had a daily 62 F100 last year. Why did I sell it? Cuz it ****ed to drive. ****ty steering, awful straight axle that would shake your teeth out in any NJ construction site, SLOOOOOWWW straight 6. Nosebleed stance. Somewhat adequate brakes, but single master. Really wanted it, but after driving it awhile I hated it. Anyone arguing you if you and your Flinstone friends wanna roll with that? Nope. Go for it. But there is power rack/pdb/IFS/SBC/low stance to be gained from the S10 route. If you cant understand why people want old looks and new driving qualities by now...
eh...old frame new frame who cares as long as the vehicle is saved/ends up on the road. me, I am going with the original frame on my 55 and an s10 frame on the 52. With the 52 I want a old look on modern frame without spending big bucks to update the front and rear suspension on the original frame.
draggin ***: everyone in this thread gets your point.no disrespect but, i don`t think you are gonna be the deciding factor in what people decide to do with their vehicles. you stated your opinion on this. i think if you don`t have anything of value to add to this thread , why post in it? i couldn`t be happier with my swap. i actually have a second one in the works.
no one has answered my question thats all... i asked WHY do all that work... its not like its going to handle like a damn vette or anything. its a ****ing old *** pickup truck, who care how it ****in drives, ive said it before and ill say it again, you want a new car or you want an old car... im not down with anyone halfway in the water.
For me on the 52 I wanted something that I can use as a daily driver to and from work. That is about 100 miles per day on a two lane highway. I want something that tracks straight and is reliable. I could go the M2 front suspension route and use the stock frame. But for a ton less then that I got a longbed S10, new lowered spindles, new bearings, springs, rotors, pads, ford 8.8 rear new leafs, shocks, SBC s10 kit, and ****** kit. I got all of that for a lot less then the M2 suspension. This truck will basically be a S10 with a stock 327...It will have air and a heater and a stereo. It will be a new truck with an old body on it. Why do this rather then just drive it as an S10 with a V8? no smog in california since it is tagged as a 52 chevy truck. I get more leg room as the 52 has more leg room then the S10. I still get the looks of an older truck with the reliability of a newer truck. Insurance wise it will be about the same except with the S10 it would be just liability vs the 52 which will cost the same and be full coverage. I know I could have rebuilt the leafs and steering box and everything else and it would have tracked ok down the highway but it would still have been older and there would have been more odds of things going wrong. If things go wrong mechanically now with the 52 chevy truck I can get parts at any autozone since the 80s to early 90s S10s are pretty much the same.
WHY??? Ok why build an old car at all...hell ,run down to the dealer and get yourself a new truck and be done. If you want to build a clean truck you should probably do a frame off build anyway. As long as you have it off the frame might as well rebuild everything to be dependable...with an old truck I would upgrade to a dual res master cylinder and add new rubber brake hoses...probably needs new shoes, wheel cylinders, and maybe a turn on the drums...and then it still won't stop nearly as well as an s-10 setup all the while it cost you way more cash than using the s-10. Nothing wrong with old cars as they were built...but then I'm not a restorer myself...I like to cut **** up and improve (in my mind) the vehicle to where I can cruise it cross country at the drop of a hat....and I want to be able to do 1000 miles a day and still be able to walk when I get there...so a comfy ride helps. So even if you think its just a ****ing old ***ed truck...it doesn't have to ride like one.
