That frame cleaned up pretty good!

Looked a little closer at the '46 today...realized I wouldn't feel bad about molesting it that much. There is quite a bit restored, and probably alot more sitting around out west.

Its got 88-thousand miles (How? haha) and there is a little rust out in it. Lower cowl has rusted out on passenger side (barely) and looks like it might have on the driverside before. The sun-visor hole things are kinda rusted out, and the cab corners are kinda bent/warped a little somehow. One of the rockers has gotten eat a little on the inside of one door, still...not much.

But I'll do something with it. I've let alot of them go before, then regretted it later.

the weld on the left needs some attention, but ive only been welding for a couple days now so im pretty darned happy with it so far, im going to go bac and grind it down to almost nothing and re-weld it

and last a shot of the "grille", im going to cut the horizontal main bar out and mount the rest to the front crossmember on the frame[IMG]

oh, i forgot to point out in the last pic, laying on the engine hoist is my 38? ford axle, its laying down so you cant tell much about it, but its got 21 1" holes across it, the front crossmember on the frame has 7 holes on the front side and 13 on the back side (factory toyota holes :D) thought that was interesting,

Your welds look like hell......You need to hire a new welder. Or just start paying the one you got
I see the crx hiding back there in the bushes......I think it needs the small block more than the rod.

  11. come on, you can cut up the nice stuff too, there's no stripped bolts or rust to fall in your face...lol

im hoping to get hectorex to come help me out some more being that hes the one responsible for me finally doing this. I had toyed with the idea for a while, sourced some parts, got some ideas going but decided to finish off my nova, I had a good start on it but it wasnt exactly what i wanted so i was going to do some stuff that would be easily swapped to an older nova later on. WELL, i get a call from ole hectorex telling me there is a carshow local that is pretty cool, so i go check it out and in the middle of the showroom floor sits two ratrods like i had thought of building, so i check them out, one was over the top, too much stuff, but i still liked it for the idea, the other was quite cool, ragtop, expanded steel floor, i liked it, bare minimum. So the bug had bitten me again, but this time it was for good. I went as soon as i could and got the cab and started collecting parts. Was promised some help in return for the hours and hours and late nights in a COLD garage helping with some suspension and frame work on a little tan toyota....lol and hopefully that someone is going to help out real soon there hectorex...ha ha. I'm hoping to start making the rear frame rails soon, once the nova is gone im getting the steering components for the frontend and it should be close to a roller...... should be... ha ha

I'm going to try an use a '55 Ford Pick-up frame. Already has the straight axle and pretty much everything there...and it was cheap.

Kinda tired of the bottomed out look anyway.

whats wrong with the bottomed out look? roadkill removal service, should charge by the pound for everyone of them you scrape off the road with your oilpan and have the state d.o.t. pay you for it, least thats my plan..... think it will work?:D

antihuman81 looks like that things comin along pretty good

i gettin ready to pull my buddy 40 chevy pu cab into the shop here in a couple of days, this guy is somewhere around the 400 lbs range and is wantin a traditional style rod something along the lines of my lil model a so we scoured the entire state of tx looking for him something and 2 blocks from my house we run across this chevy pu cab for 125 dollars well to make a long story short im finishing up a disaster build on a 56 plymouth for the same guy and we got lots of parts left over so i said lets build something off the wall

gonna chop it, channel it, custom build a frame use leftover crysler rearend w/ super low gears, leftover 70's dodge dart 318 and runa suicide 40's ford frontaxle, some kinda late 30's early 40's Mopar grille and shell, custom build a bed with a chopped up dodge tailgate

on the body we are gonna add a body line or two, use an old international back window (split), shave the firwall you get the idea basicaly take all the reckonizable chevy stuff off the body and call it a 1940 Whatzit

should turn out pretty cool and pretty unuseual and definatley blow some mind with all the weird kustom work

oh fo sure anti ill get some pics up on my site

in the meantime check out the site, it needs some severe updates(hasnt been updated since september)

the disaster was it was a real pos when i started it and to tell the truth it isnt much better now, too many people had there hands on it before i got ahold of it and all the guy wanted to do was clean up the riggin of previous owner and try to make it look nice

    you know the ol sayin
make a silk purse outta a pigs ear

i should be able to have the truck roll outt the shop under its own power in about 3 1/2 to 4 months but thats not including body mods

Those welds are scary, and you need some sort of brace or gusset from the cross member to the frame, or, better yet, bring that crossmember all the way across the width of the frame and weld it right it in.

What's supporting the motor mount bolts? Is there a bushing welded or pressed into that piece of tubing?

That sounds like a healthy engine you've got there--just want to make sure it doesn't tear your car all up when you get on it. I'm building a '39 myself right now, though not quite as radical as yours.

Sorry for these pictures. best I could do. This is my American Austin in 1964. Started it in around '59 when I was in high school. It's a pickup cab with a trunk from some unknown doner car brazed on. kind of an early day "Bobber" I wounder what some later cabs would look like if someone wanted to turn their pickup into a three window?

How about stick welding that stuff? Its a little easier to get started with, and the welds usually turn out better.

Get a chipping hammer and a good wire brush too, some $5 leather gloves would help too.

Darby.... this is from an earlier post from me
there is a bushing welded in, the gussets arent on yet there going to go from the "down tube" of the crossmember to the frame and motor mount essentially extending it all the way across, thats tomorows project, that and start on the trans crossmember. Im planning on taking the truck when its a roller to hectorex and having him burn the mounts in with the arc. best i can do on an extension cord and a mig... do appreciate the concern though. the motor is pretty healthy, i'll try to post a pic of the carnage on the 4sp saginballs tranny. main gears on the input and countershaft are eat off, one corner of the trans is almost cracked off... a little too much? nah... just got to get a stronger trans, or less weight. the truck should weigh alot less than the nova i had it all in though, so im hoping not to break the 3sp manual thats going in for now.....
