    Hey Guys,
We did the Ghost cruise for the Broiler in late Feb, and The Coalition to Save the Broiler is prepping for the Holy Ghost cruise for the summer season, The date has not been locked down but this would be a cross country cruise.starting at many points east of Downey CA. and would need to involve many car clubs as a "Harveys Baton" would be shipped to to whoever could make the complete trip or just a leg of it,then passed on to an waiting participant who could make sure that it could do another leg @ min. If there are any clubs out there that are willing to take the ride west for a worthy cause, let us know.
    Thanx,
    Kevin

Roadside Peek : Harvey's Broiler Ghost Cruise
Here are the pics from the Ghost Cruise.
This was something that needed to be done, as well as what I posted above. We're talking about a nationwide deal along the lines of Americruise but only coming this way, Do any of you guys have any thing to add, we made progress with this fight and are always open to ideas.

Let me know by way of pm or just email. The perp goes to court on wed 04/04/07. I hope that they give him special circumstances for damaging a piece of Americana which he as a lesse didn't even own or even get permission from the owner & the city to demolish.

If ya can, give it a looksee and see if we can improve upon the idea. If you're in the area on wednesday, come & make some noise!
    Thank you guys.

  3. So whats the latest from the government boys on the status of the building.......curious minds want to know???

    Meatball,
I have been working with the Modern Commitee Chairman-Adriene Biondo as well as Analisa Hungerford=Coalitition to Save the Broiler, Ron @ Burnco=HAMBer and many others including the City of Downey-Kirk Cartozian(City Councilman).
We went to court prepared, The perp showed up w/o legal council, which according to City of Downey Prosecutor James Eckhart,
This is a normal stall tactic. Figures!

We definitely need all of the help that we can get with this deal.
I will say that we have learned about how commercial property & the city functions.

Still haven't got the guy to "Shout out a Price!" I even called him out on the carpet-publicly in the editorial section of The Downey Patriot when he said that no body has made him an offer, Where do I call???

We go back on April 18th @ 8:30am in Downey Superior Court-Div#1. If any of you can show up, please come & voice an opinion.
    Thank you,
    Kevin

So today I get a call that Someguys are walking around the site of the Broiler yanking wire out from the rubble. No OSHA there or City Knowledge. Again this is still a crime scene and is posted keep out!
Clean up can only commence upon acceptance of a city/property owner designated impartial-knowledgeable 3rd party in order to sift through and rescue any thing that may be restored.
Luckilly one of the Coalition members was driving by & noticed these people on the cite again with no truck in site.
Awaiting an update as this just now happened, will report back later.

    Axle,
Here is where we are @ with the Broiler. We have a court date on June 13th, @ 8:30 am Downey Court for a pre-trial hearing.
Ardas Yanik=The accused finally obtained an attorney the night before his last continuance, He now has one who didn't even know what the Broiler was & has become due to his clients negligence.

We are currently planning the The Holy Ghost Cruise.
We are going to need a lot of Nationwide help as well as participation.

This is gonna be alot of work. Adriene Analisa, Burny & I are going to be having a meeting this week in order to get the artwork finalized & get it to R&C Lee so that it may be put in coming events.

We have a start date set for Oct 7th to for anyone in the east to run the route out west so that they can drive All Roads leading to the Broiler, Arriving by the 14th in Downey. Taking in the sights along the way, look for old roadside cafes, diners & drive ins and take as many photos as thay can to share with us to show what is still off of the main interstates and what progress done to them & how it affected their way of life.

We are open to others help as well if they would like to.:D
Go to Harveys Broiler Ghost Cruise for pics. We'll most likely do this run for again, cause I have had alot people ask about it and for people that are local to the So-Cal area this cruise was quite informative as well as took a good part of the day to complete.

Keep checking in here as I will. If the Shifters would like to lend a hand we'd sure appreciate it.

    Thanx,
    Kevin

  9. I got a email from a city concilman...they are not letting this go away! Maybe they are using this for election fodder,so what ever the reason.I thank them for the effort and that of Kevin and his people....I will come from Arizona for the GHOST CRUISE any body else up for it?...remember its the same weekend as long beach swap meet!

    Hey guys,
If any of you go past the Broiler, do me a favor and keep an eye out for vandals, the intact glass in front was 1st graffitied then broken out. Some of the key structure that remains is being compromised near the signage. It is going to take our eyes in order to make sure that someone doesn't torch what is left.
I even drove by and walked around it @ 3-4 am this morning and noticed even more damage-Christos is probably a happy camper, because he doesn't do anything to save what is left.
Any HAMBers willing to keep an eye on it?

Beat their A**es! this place should be respected! I know the city cares, but Christos would torch it in a hot second if given the chance!
Just keep an eye out and if you see anyone call the cops!
THere is a moratorium in place that states that nothing can be damaged and the city would be the ones to prosecute if anyone is aprehended.
BTW, thank you for the cool comment re: Pat Ganahls article, just trying to save the place.

Any chance if the city is REALLY interested in saving whats left, that they'd spring for a fence around the place? Maybe even some plywood to cover what's left of the windows?

  15. There IS a fence. But, like locks they only deter honest folks.

I thought the same thing, Just throw up boards over what is left, meaning 2 panes of glass. Gal Pal Patricia & I took a walk around it again today, kinda took a good look @ the rubble and 2 things that we noticed was that a tree that had been damaged in the demo was coming up through the mess, then my eyes looked to the left of it and several flowers were peeking right through too!

I thought kind of like when a rod/custom gets wrecked and while the owner is bumming, they look over & they see something on it that says, All is not dead here, You busted your a** to build me, so get to rebuilding so we can cruise again.

We're getting ready to put together this national cruise to this spot & looking to hear stories of how people who have traveled across the country and found places similar to the Broiler and what has transpired on their way here.

We'll do our part, hopefully we'll get participants to do their part too.

    Thank you John,
Believe me, we are really going to need help when the Holy Ghost Cruise gets near. Yesterday Jun 7th was the 6 mo. anniversary of the demo, That means I haven't been conducting my speed equip business in a normal fashion, in as much time:eek:.

Anybody who wants help is more than welcome to come on board.

I agree. Wood isn't the problem. We've just finished re-roofing and putting in a new stone floor in our 200 year old woodframed barn. You can still see the pencil marks on the wood where the original carpenters marked out the cuts 200 years ago.

Burny & I passed out flyers @ LARS in the swap & show area,
One of those shiny rod owners threw a flyer in the trash, I retrieved and handed it to a friend right in front of that guy, Once that he heard the excitement in the other guys voice, he then wanted a another flyer=Wierd huh?
We need people to get excited and become aware of the "Demise of American Car Culture Icons" We doing what we can with what we have.
If any one in the East would like to help & possibly make the ride out, let us know. Other than the one guy @ the LARS, I gave Billy G. & Bruce Meyers the info, both said that they would do what they could about being there?
Court day with Ardis Yanik on Wed, ill see if any new transpires.

    Kent,
Went to court again, Ardis did not show up again, his attorney did though. We have had this case continued 4+ times already.
Vocal support would help as well as court attendance.

I did though spend some time talking with both attorneys.
Ardis Yanek will have to appear on July 3rd @ 1:30 pm or a bench warrant will be re-issued.

Went to the city & pulled many permits re:this property, They told me a story of when exactly Harvey's transfered over to the Johnie's moniker. That seems to have taken place in 1969, Not 1965 like Christos stated-(I knew this already as my aunt used to cruise Harvey's with her boyfriend and I remember looking up @ the sign-That was 1967).

There seems to be a waiting period for all of this to go down, I would like to see it sped up a little bit. We need to get the cleanup started, so that when the Holy Ghost Cruise, participants can see that the damage to it is extensive and we as a colalition require assistance in its rebuild.

Spoke with the city planner, we went over some info, I found that the original blue prints are on file and that they may be accessed in the rebuild process. So that is a good thing.

I'll keep you guys informed. If you can, please try to show some support by attending the run. Email me for the info.

    Thanks NoSurf & Meatball,
Really appreciate that. Will have to wait until the criminal case is over until I can even see the blue prints, but The L.A. Conservancy does have them copied for the landmarking, I want to personally see what the city has.
A shirt as well as bumper stickers & decals are in the works, infact the artwork done by HAMBer BURNY was completed a few weeks back, now we just need some bone$ in order to get em made. Working on it.
Is $20.00 bucks a shirt too much?????
Will file another report when I go to court on the 3rd of July.
