Here's a quick update. I just got a report from Jim (my main squeeze) out at the County garage and Buck (who's part of the committee) just got down in the vault to check it out. Evidently the gunite DID NOT HOLD! There is sediment in the bottom of the vault and there is evidence of water marks on the walls of the vault. Don't know if the water penetrated inside the plastic around the car though.

I was there and I will post more pictures as soon as I can get them resized.
The whole thing was full of water to the deck lid and evidence that water has been over the roof!

From the articles I have read, the wrapping was a heavy paper soaked with a "high tech" rust inhibiting coating backed with aluminum foil. It was not plastic and the paper looked to be disolved and all that was left was the alumimum backer.

My guess is that car will still be worth a fortune.

Or it'll make someone a nice ratrod.

I updated the pictures on our site.

    http://www.tulsachevys.com/Images/buriedcar/index.html

They were going to open the vault today and figure out how to get the car out for Friday's celebration in front of all the VIPs.
I have not heard what Plan "B" is now.........

They should be able to lift it with the steel beams in place under the car providing they aren't rusted in pieces. The company out of Kansas that is lifting the car said they have a plan A, B & C. One of the plans included placing new beams under the car in case the originals were destroyed. Should be interesting!

  17. From the looks of the walls the water level has been deep at one time or another,,,,and it appears it is still sitting in water.

I was always told hind sight is 20/20,,,I can hear the ghost of the past saying we should have sealed it up inside the courthouse.
    HRP

Not all ideas can be brilliant.

  19. That just freaking sucks. Maybe (fingers crossed) the plastic or whatever the tarpaulin was helped to keep the water from intruding the vehicle. My best Judy Tenutta voice IT COULD HAPPEN!

Doesn't look to good does it...looks like it is sitting in about about bumper deep water right now. 50 years of being immersed in water (in a concrete capsule that is not going to breath well), I wonder if anything on it will NOT be rusted?

I hate to say it but it does not look good for this one. I would guess that the water has been in there off and on for most of its life. Hope fully I am wrong. I would like nothing better than to see them pull out a prestine automobile that is worthy of the finest museum.

I would guess with some of todays materials you could do a better job at conserving a car, but there really isn't any of them that I would want to see in 50 years!

It would be funny to see them roll up in front of the "Winner's" house with that! Just like publisher's clearing house, without the enthusiasm. ha ha ha

  26. I have to agree, looks like most of the water stains on the walls suggest it's been fully submerged on and off. I kinda doubt the cover could keep that out. bum deal. I love history, but this kinda sucks...

I'd put it on ebay as "0 mile unrestored" with no pics and see how high the bidding gets :D

dam the vault that they burried her in filled up with water..and as you can see it looks like there might be rust residue on the concrete walls(unless thats mud) ..im skeptical of what the underbody condition is..
