    Cool.

With the roller cam engines, you can swap out the cam and use the old roller lifters - no need to put new lifters in like a flat tappet cam. I've used the Ford Motorsport E-303 cam - it works good with an automatic, no need to worry about piston-to-valve clearance, and it has a nice lope at idle.

Just a little more, hopefully useful, info....

Good to know about using the old roller lifters, and I was looking into that E-303 cam as I bought one of those 5 liter mags yesterday and heard good stuff about them. Thanks.
If I was to run headers, I would have to more than likely make some as I tried 3 differnt sets and none were a direct bolt on app as the steering and motor mounts are in the way.

  3. Run the manifolds....they look great.

Tell me about those old exaust manifolds? Year? Casting numbers? The one shown on your old engine looks like it would clear my motor mount and leave room for the steering. The one that came on this 69 Torino engine I have has the passenger side manifold that would dump right into the firewall on my A coupe. And of course the driver's side was broken. Clearing the engine mounts, steering, firewall, and not frying the starter or passenger's feet would all be plusses.

Joe, the manifolds are 1971 351 Windsor units and the passenger one is like the one you have, but it works OK in the truck as I recessed the firewall anyway. Got both motors out and laying side by side now, so Friday I will get back on the changing of parts.
Hudsoncustom come on down, Friday it's on!

After trying to find the right distributor gear I just found out it was easier to buy a new Duraspark unit for an 85 Mustang (carb'ed).......
    It is part # 30-2831

If you run into trouble on the lower pulley, there is a harmonic balancer out there for this swap, 50 oz balance but looks like a 28 oz balance with the 3 or 4 bolt pattern. The Mustang parts places have them. It's a pretty popular swap in the Mustang world, glad to be OUT of that world myself, bunch of damn snobs.

Almost forgot to add, 1982 is the cutoff for 28 oz balance, 50 oz after and ALL 351W motors are 28 oz regardless of year.

Thanks, got it all back together using the 50 oz. stuff. Did not use any after market pieces, all stock Ford.

1-old style front covers have the dipstick. Use an old style pan with it.
2-old style covers have the fuel pump boss. Mount an eccentric.

    3-You need a 4 bolt-vee belt style bottom pulley. (Think aftermarket/aluminum.)

You need a correctly balanced flywheel-C4 to 5.0L (Think aftermarket.)

You need a steel or bronze dist gear. (Aftermarket)

Ford makes it all, just harder to find...heh.

    You'll be good to go.

    1. I put a plug in it!
    2. I used one of my 72 302.
    3. I used the one off of my 72 302 4 bolt!
    4. I used a 85 Mustang duraspark unit, # 30-2831 new from the local auto parts place for $70 bucks.
Do not use a bronze gear, RACING only. If ya like to spend money they now make a compossite one, but WOW, big money!
Not all 5.0L's have the 351w firing order, only High Output or aftermarket cams.
