I can't figure out what this was used for. It is on the drivers side of the bed in front of the fender.
I'm gonna go with the road flares idea, although I have seen some round gas cans that were runningboard mounted.
kinda looks like a spare trailer tire holder,my grandfather had one simular on his 47 chevy pick up and hauled his spare boat trailer tire in it,he used the inside of the bed to sleep in,old fart put wooden polls up and a canvas tarp over the bed.
I have to go with the shovel idea... Any holes further up that might have been for an upper bracket? Flatman
It is definetly not big enough for a spare, even a small trailer tire wouldn't fit. To deep for a shovel I think. Flares or gas would seem the most likely possibility. Anyone have any pics of a gas can or flair container that might fit?
It's probably something a farmer added that was specific to the type farming he did. My grandfather's had a spare tire mount bolted on just above where yours appears but I believe it was a factory item.
is the wear real? maybe a clue maybe this kept a hose or rope .cable from draggin on the ground coiled flattened hose tanker truck should it be open to the ground under it ... like a salt -sand dispenser .(removable to refill.) before the tire for traction some old fuel /water cans were round for ez pour ask squirrel
road reflectors they folded up in a metal case think a vintage version of those orange reflective tri angles
