Hi guys there is a B&M 177 blower down here for sale but I cant find any good info on it. Does anyone have any useful info, including applicability to a nerar stock 302 W. Thanks guys.
most blowers like that started life as Detroit diesel (GM)blowers.so if it needs resealed you can get most seals through detroit deisel parts places,i think the one your looking at is a 4-71 blower, then you need a intake, top plate for single carb or dual carb, the good valve stem seals and carbs for blower apps, might be a good idea to get a cam ground for a blower ,if the engine is in good running condition shouldnt be to much problem with blow by from the blower, some guys will rering a engine with the file to fit rings(gapless rings),because if cylinders are worn or rings are worn,it will blow all the oil out of the breathers at highway speeds.
They used to sell a 4 bbl adapter, so if it is without manifold that is something you can whip up. But if it looks like a standard blower, it won't work on a SBF. B&M had an offset snout on the Ford blowers to clear the distributor. I suppose it could be spaced up. Pulleys should still be available through Holley. You would just need a longer belt.
Thanks guys, hopefully have some pics in the next day or two and would appreciate comments then if its OK. Apparently been run on a windsor previously and comes with 2 x 650 holleys.
So your question is not will it work, but how well. B&M printed a manual and a stock 302 with a 144 went from 205 HP to 275 at 5#. Gauge read 8 as small cam and heads restricting. With a Super Street Charger cam (get it from PAW) it went to 366. Porting the exhaust 20% made 377.
i have the catalog and all installlation instuctions for the 162 on my sbc. they list 144,162 and 174 all with single 4bbl and the 250 with a single or dual top plate. the only application for sbf is the 144. i have 40k miles on mine with only having to replace the drive seals. pm me if you want more info on these.
I don't believe the 144 is a GM part but is a propritary B&M part. I also believe the early ones did not have replaceable teflon strips on the lobe tips and tended to wear . Look to see if yours has the replaceable strips. Maybe check with B&M and see if anything I have heard is true.
B&M has merged with weiand, and weiand offers the B&M blowers with weiand badges today, I have a B&M 144 lo-profile with weiand badges. So they'd be the ones to turn to for parts. Regarding using it on a stock engine....Absolutely, but be aware that without low compression and blower pistons you cannot get greedy with the boost or timing. My 144 went on a stock 350 chev with larger heads installed to lower compression, ran awesome for a year and a half, then I got greedy with boost and timing and rocked the cast pistons in the bores. Poof! Have fun!
there is no 177 listed. the 144 and 162 are the same except for case length and use teflon lined rotors. the 174 uses gm 4-71 rotors
The 177 B&M was an all new Blower that was sold as alow profile blower that would fit under the hood of most V-8 Chev and Fords. Shifty's right B&M was taken over by Weiand and they are still making them. So you should have no problem getting info on it.
The 177 and 144 are similar in the way that they "look", but thats where the similarity ends. The B&M, Weiand, and Holley 177's are just what the number says.. 177 cubic inches per revolution of the blower, as is the 144 being 144 cubic inches per revolution. Lain
Hey Jetmek, not trying to disqualify any info you have here guy, just shooting this up here to give people a bit more understanding on the blower number and size thing. Jetmek, you did say it right in another way, the case length along with the rotors make the difference in the 144 and 162 blowers. I noted on my last post that the 144 being 144 cubic inches per rev and of course the 162 being 162 cubic inches per rev (although I am not aware of a 162 blower from B&M, Holley, or Weiand, but doesnt mean it dont exist...shoot me a pic of this thing! I am interested in seeing one. May be they dont make it anymore?). However, just to correct you, the 174 does not use the GM 4-71 rotors. The 174 uses the same 4.975 diameter twin lobe involute rotor design as the other smaller blowers being the 142, 144, 174 and the next larger blower the 177. The 4-71 uses a 30 degree twisted three lobe rotor and is physically 5.470 diameter for small bores, and 5.770 for large bores and the rotors for both the small bore and large bore 4-71's being 10 inches long. The 4-71 lastly, pumps approx 220 cubic inches per rev (small bore) and 280 cubic inches per rev (large bore) Lain
see if it looks like these http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=400053+308756&autoview=sku and don't expect to put a chevy mini blower on a 302 as the distributor is smack in they way of the drive snout...
Hey Squirrel, I 'm a looking! I am also going to check out Holley's web site.. I know they have images and some uhhh...piss poor descriptions of their blowers there. But they may have the 162 blower there... I just never heard of one... And as anal as I am with blowers, I am just plain flat curious now! Hahah!! Lain
I put a 144 on a 302 in '95. With a mild cam and ported heads it runs pretty good. If you're using a 302 with a serpentine belt, you have to modify the tensioner (remove the spring tensioner, cut off the bracket, and addapt one from, I believe, an early 80's Ford V6 (Granada maybe???)). I also had to put a longer necked thermostat housing on, as the upper radiator hose comes up and over the blower snout, which is raised and offset to avoid the distributor.
Way cool! Jetmek is sending me some pics of the 162, yet another blower I had no idea that was made! I will add that to my web site http://www.fordflathead.com/basic_measurements.html Also, to all of you, I would like images of strange, different blowers on or off vehicles if you have any... I will be updating my page here that has all the "blower images" as I have ohhh like over a hundred images to add to that page... the page is here http://www.fordflathead.com/just_blowers.html Thanks everyone!
