So... I was at the Sloan museum car show in Flint today.

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but apparently some guy across the way started up his car, which was apparently in gear, and it took off like a rocket!

Fortunately, we were able to get my mom and my daughter out of the way; but it hit our cooler, took out a couple of lawn chairs, FastEddie got hit, and both of my legs got pinned to the rear quarter of my '55. My legs caved in the quarter and bent the bumper of the '55, and the guy's headlight shattered and cut the hell out of my left knee...

I talked to Ed, and he says he's alright, just cut and bruised and a little sore, but I didn't get to see his legs before I went to the hospital...

My right fibula is broken in three places, and my left leg is pretty trashed, but they don't think anything's broken. I'll be picking glass out of it for a while, but I can deal with that.

Things could have been a lot worse... I'm just glad my mom and daughter are alright.

So please guys, pay attention to what's going on around you and PLEASE!!! Don't start your car if you're not in a position to shut it down, or hit the brakes, or whatever.

    Thanks....
    Steve

Holy Shit Steve!!! Good looking out for the family. Unfortunately Heroes are generally the ones hurt the worst!!

Was the guy starting up his car thru the window or something?!?!?

Get well soon and lets us know when the HAMB party to rebuld the '55 is going down.

    Hang-in there.

Well, I didn't see it, but according to witnesses he was sitting side-saddle.

The '55 is still drivable, just banged up. I think I might leave it, and date and autograph the dent!

I'll see if I can talk my wife into taking a pic of it so I can post it.

wow that sucks! we have a "no starting the engine" policy at our car shows, after a guy started his in gear, he was standing outside the car, but he got it shut off before it moved.

I hope you have a full and speedy recovery, and I hope someone learns something from this disaster.

Same thing happened at Lead East a few years ago.
Luckily nobody got hurt that time.Smashed a couple nice cars because someone didn't have a Neutral Safety Switch.

  16. Sorry to hear it bro. I understand legs being bunged up and I feel for ya.

Real glad to hear Mom and the girl are OK ; it damned sure could have been worse.

And I'm right behind ya, it just aint cool to carnk one if you can't get ahold of it before it gets away.

    Get well friend.

  17. Damn!! Heal up soon. Good to hear the ladies and children got out of the way.

These stories make me queasy. I know I'll be having a neutral safety switch in the automatic cars and a clutch switch in the manuals.

I'm so glad your family is safe and you are doing okay. That's just bad news! What happened with the guy that had his car get away from him? I'm sure he feels way awful.

The driver was fine... a police officer came to the hospital to give me the accident report number and she said "That guy feels really bad. He had to leave the show early, it ruined his whole day!"

I guess I should apologize for getting my legs smashed!

Here's what my legs did to the '55...

This same thing happend last weeked at a swap meet we were at. This guys brakes went out and he almost tool out a crowd of peopel sitting in lawn chairs. The onll one he got was a 15 year old kid asleep in a reclining lawn chair. He was ok, but it could have been much worse.

    BE CAREFUL PEOPLE!

Man, luckily your cat-like reflexes saved the day. Glad it wasn't worse, but sorry to hear that you and Eddie had to pay for this guys education with your bodies - he's probably down at the store, buying a neutral safety switch right now. Hope you guys heal up okay and don't get burned on the doctor bills...
