so the big question is.. where do you get a neutral safety switch for a home built car? I tried to get one for my 49 at the auto parts store and they all seem to go to the shift linkage on the column shift... where do you get one that is universal for like a turbo 350 or 700 R4 that goes on the transmission?

Theoretically, you shouldn't have to have a neutral safety switch, but you should be able to wire the brake light switch on some setups to work the same way. Wire the ignition to only crank at the key when the brake pedal is stepped on. Basically cures two birds with one stone - you have to at least have the door open and your foot on the pedal in order to turn the engine over.

Wow! Sorry to hear that, and hope you heal up quick.

Sorry to disagree with some of these posts but I'm not blaming
the car or an apparent lack of a late model interlock. The way I
see it is operator error plain and simple. Whats next, rods that you
hafta step on the brake to put in gear? I apologize for the mini rant,
but damn it,what happened to just being responsible?

that couldve been ugly, not that it wasnt..

  6. Reading this, I'm really glad to hear that you & your family & friends are not hurt worse.

I have a friend whose father retired at 68, after a long, productive career, family, etc. Rarely took time off; spent his vacations working on the home, or the kids' homes. Retired on a Friday, did the retirement party, and so on.

Went to a farm auction the next morning. Walking along the parking area to the auction, he got hit by an elderly gentleman who was trying to park & lost control...crushed him against a car & killed him instantly. The guy was "sitting sideways"...just trying to move it forward a bit....

Hope everyone who reads this thread thinks a little farther next time they get behind the wheel just to move the car "a couple of feet".....

  7. My son and I were standing in front of this twin, blown engine T at Long Beach swapmeet, and the guy reached in the window and started the thing, and it took off. Went through the nylon fencing and hit two cars. It pushed a S10 into a Caddy. Since then,I never stand in front,or behind anything when it's running, without someone inside. I don't like it when guys stand there and rev their motors, outside the car. At least you saved your daughter from harm. Could've been deadly!

Happy to hear your family is safe and you will recover.
Would be happier to hear your story of a tort award which bankrupted the sorry slackoff jakenapes that caused the whole thing by his absolute contempt for common sense. A trip into the ballbat room for an hour wouldn't hurt the worthless slug a bit either.
Then again, there is the Karma thing, isn't there?

I JUST watched a "trauma room" show on Discovery last night, and two women were pinned between their car and an out-of-control car.

You don't want to know how much worse it could have been. I actually had a nightmare after watching the show.

Glad you and your family are relatively OK. I would need to recover some money from that other driver if I was you.

Sad times when we aren't safe at car shows.

  17. Sure glad wasn't worse!Get well soon,so you can see your lawyer.I don't know about there, but here if you have the keys, you are in"care and control"of a vehicle. If you start it you must be prepared to"control it"!

I know exactly how you feel. I was in a buddies shop when the gear shift fell into Drive as we were all standing in front of it, looking into the engine bay. I was the only one that did not make it out of the way. come to find out the car was known for having a worn shifter. So I decided to play a mean joke and ask for the car owners name and the name of both of their attorneys. It was worth the laugh after being ran over and pinned between both cars.

Wow Steve I'm really sorry to hear that. Glad no one else was hurt.

Otherwise it was a great show. On Saturday we had 13 hot rods meet at the tatoo parlol in downtown Flint and cruise over to the show. No gunfire or bodies in the steet or anything which is unusual for Flint.

WOW! Sorry to hear the news Steve. I'm so happy though that your Mom and daughter are OK. I've never seen your Dad angry but I bet this was certainly one time.

I hope you get better soon. I hate to hear things like that happening. It just gives the anti car people something to use against us.

You do not know how many cars I get in my shop that do not have a neutral safety switch. I will not pass them with out one. I ussually end up splicing a micro switch into the small wire going to the starter. You can only start the car in park but I know that the car will not roll away when they start it.

Back when I was in high school I was working at the gas station pumping gas. One day I was walking behind a car that was being started . The car started and it was in gear. It hit me and through me into the overhead door and the car went across the lot and took down the sign in the corner of the lot. The car started and the person inside frooze and did not know what to do. It happen so fast no one had time to react.

Everyone when building a car there are some things that should not be over looked. like the neutral safety switch. It can also be used on stick shift car. hook it to the clutch linkage. It is every simple to do with a micro switch.

Every car I building I use the NSRA 23 point safety inspection form. It is very handy when building a car. all of my cars pass the first time I take them for the NSRA inspection.

Take care and I'm glad the family is ok. I guess you are there hero. You can be proud of what you did. (fast thinking)

man. I'm so glad you are able to tell this tale. I'm glad it wasn't worse. I read Purple's post first and he mentioned this. I found went right to this post.

Funny. Even before I opened it I knew you would mention your family before yourself. You are that kind of guy.

Steve, glad to hear you are ok. You never expect that to happen at a show, but it does. I'm really glad you got your mom and daughter out of the way, that could have been even worse. I like your idea about leaving the dent, it will be a conversation piece!
Have a speedy recovery, I'm sure you have great nurses!

I was that guy. I reached in to start my car in my own driveway and it ran over my ankle then right through the garage door. Looking back that was a pretty cheap lesson.

I start my roadster all the time, standing out side, just to warm it up.
    NO MORE, after reading that.
    Get well.

Sure glad no one was real seriously hurt.
Broken bones are bad enough. Unbelievable.
How many of us have mistakenly hit the starter with the tranny in gear. We all need to be careful.

Ouch! Glad to hear that you got your family out of the way, but that is horrible what happened to you.

I was pinned to a wall by a buddies mustang once because he started it in gear. (freakin idiot) but it was nothin like what you got.

Let us know if there is anything you need from us. Also, like the idea of signing the dent, classic!

I took notes from the race car guys years ago for this very reason...
    these cars have
a key operated starter switch- that runs through the neutral safety switch.
    an ignition switch-stand alone
    a fuel pump switch-stand alone
and here of late, alot of guys are installing "brake lock out"
switches, that will only allow the shifter to be moved out of park if the brake is engaged. complicated, but seems like a pretty good idea, all things considered.

    Glad to hear you're o.b.k.b.

I think you should get "It'll buff out" tattooed on your shin!

  30. Get well soon Steve.
