Glad to hear you're gonna be OK and the family is safe. Sheetmetal is the easy part.

Watched a guy many years ago at the Muddy River Run trying to start his T-bucket, blown big block, slicks, the whole 9 yards. Luckily he was sitting in it, there was no one in front of him, and it was on grass because he hit the starter 3 or 4 times with the thing in gear, apparently couldn't find neutral. Naturally he's blippin the thottle to start and spins up the slicks up on the grass....total moron.

Also, watched a car parked on a hill come out of park and roll down into another car when the owners wife slammed the trunk. No flesh injuries, only bent metal and wounded pride.

Working neutral safety switches and working park brakes should be on all of our to-do lists.

I’m glad things didn’t turn out worse.

I’m surprised more of ya’ll aren’t saying this guy needs to be more responsible. Shit, who gives a f' if it ruined his day, he should get his ass kicked for having the nerve to try to be a victim....

I hope you talk to his insurance, and a good lawyer, because his insurance will shaft you if they can... I’m not saying make the guy go bankrupt, but at least get a fair amount of money for the damage to you, your stuff, your car, and for your pain, because I can’t imagine that feeling good... And since instead of coming to see you and apologizing, he expects sympathy, I wouldn’t feel the least bit bad about talking’ to a lawyer either...

And what ever happend to being responsible? Why dont we just blame the car... "ban low performance driving, not high performance car" and "guns dont kill people, people do" are two sayings that come to mind, simply because of the lack of responsibility being placed on this guy, instead its just getting pawned off on his car....

Hope your doing better. I saw this happen at the local show and shine a couple years ago. A young mexican boy shows up with a big blocked mustang. Roll gage the works. His dad was with him and couldn't speak English. Neither of them new anything about the car when I tried to talk to them and they confessed that they had just bought it. So, we walk away and start talking to some other folks and all the sudden Whoop..smash. The kid had reached through the window and started the engine in gear, it jumped forward and smashed into a 66 Chevelle. Needless to say, a few words were exchanged and the kid and his dad never came back. Stupid ass people do stupid ass shit!!.

Steve - glad to here your OK - moslty - and super glad to hear about your daughter getting out of the way - speedy recovery bro

  13. Firstly good to hear it wasnt worse and that you will get better. He was from Ohio wasnt he? Had one of mine slip into reverse while idling, made a mess out of dads garage. I would leave the dent, it gives it character..

I used a lever actuated micro switch in the drag car, the shifter has to be in park for the engine to start, that way there is no linkage slop causing it to start when its in gear rather than neutral. The shifter lever itself actuates my switch, but you could mount it from the pan rail with a simple bracket so the quadrant hits it.

Damm..Hate to hear this..i hope you are all right..this si such a simple thing to correct..one guy said it well..lets stop being careless..that would help! but for those that need some one to hold their hand..there are lock out switches and safety devices that do this job very well..I installed a LoKar floor shifter for my car just for the safety devices..26o bucks ..small price to pay for every ones safety..too many people take short cuts when it comes to safety..old cars that dont have these devices..they have no excuse for not installing them..doesnt take a rocket scientist to do it..i know because im no rocket scientist...
Good to see you had quick reflexes..saved the kid and mom..good move dude..sorry about your injuries that sucks..the man who did this should get you cophensated..fix your car..and pay your hospitalization and medical bills..please dont tell me he was one of those UN INSURED ??? thats another one of my rants..for another day
    heal up

I'm with "smalltownspeed" on this one.
I don't care if you have a neutral safety switch or not. NO ONE should try and start a car without being IN IT! Where is the common sense in these people? I can't believe he didn't just for a second think to himself "maybe I should get in the car before I start it, just incase something happends".
Or maybe he was just SOOOO sure of himself that he didn't need to think about the safety of those around him.
Yeah, everyone makes mistakes, but DAMN, don't make them while others are in harms way!

Not only did you ruin the MG drivers day, but you ruined mine too. It was pretty crazy to get a call from a friend saying that Steve had just been run over by a car.:p

Glad to hear that things are going to be OK, even though you are casted up. Like I told you last night, be glad it wasnt a big old land yacht.... that could have been ugly!

If you need anything, call me.

  18. Hey, at least it's only the fibula.
    Here's to a speedy recovery.
As far as a settlement, that's what insurance is for.
You were definitely touching your car, so your limits may apply as well (The bulk of my settlement came from my un/under insured part of my policy).

Thanks for all the well wishes guys...
I'm feeling quite a bit better today.

I can at least put a little weight on my left leg today, so I've been able to hobble around on crutches a little. Yesterday, if I tried to put any weight at all on it my knee tried to buckle!

I had to "modify" my cast a little though (that's what guys do, right?) because it was putting a bunch of pressure right on my heel. About 10 minutes with a utility knife and we're great!:)

    Anyway, thanks again guys!
    Steve

Dude, I've been bummed all day. Me 'n the missus have been workin' on our house all day the last two days, and today, this has been on my mind all day. So many thoughts run through a fella's head. I'm glad Steve, and Eddie, and Steve's family are well (I guess, if you wanna call it that...), Steve's tough, he'll weather the storm. He and Eddie have good friends. If they need anything, they'll be well taken care of. But this dent in the fender, has me fuming. I realize that a busted appendage can cause a fella to miss work and such, but a piece of hot rod history has been permanently mangled! Neutral switch or not, this guy was just plain negligent. Two people were hurt, thank god not life threatening. But a car that has endured the last fifty years, and has preserved it's heritage, thanks to Steve, has now been compromised because of one dingbat's carelesness. I'm sorry that one of the greatest day's I've ever had with friends and cars was followed up with such a tragedy. Maybe I'm being meladramatic a tad...but what a stupid situation...I just can't stop shaking my head and sayin, "That sucks..."! I'm just in plain dumbfounded disbelief...dumb. Sorry I wasn't there guys...

Sorry to hear about your legs - hope they heal up quick.

For 49RatFink, here is a Lokar neutral safety switch that will work with any shifter setup on a GM trans. It mounts to the pan and is only $24 bucks. Should be able to adapt it to others as well, with a bit of work. I used one on a home-made shifter setup I made and it works well.

  24. Sorry to hear about your injuries. Good quick thinking to get your family out of the way. Sucks to be laid up during summer, but hope you heal up fast and can get that cast off sooner than the doctors predict.

I know several others have mentioned it, but it sure seems that the other guy (MG owner) should have his insurance covering any of your med bills and lost income from not being able to work, in addition to your car repairs. Just does not make sense as the guy was 100% at fault here.

  25. glad to hear you & your family are ok && i just added something to my "never to do list"...........joe

Between you and your dad the Flint hospitals should be declaring a nice stock dividend this year.
Not to make light of this as I'm sure glad you aren't worse as it sounds like it sure could have been. Don't forget the lawyer side of this equation, the doctor part is already in motion.
Hatch clued me in about the accident this noon as I hadn't seen the thread . Been preparing for my wife's return from Florida and HAMB was taking a back seat for a change. just picked her up at the airport and decided to look the thread up before i went to bed.
Keep us informed and let everyone know if there is anything we can do.

It's not just at the shows that you gotta be careful. Years ago was working on my sister's Ranger p-up truck in the parking lot. Standing with my knees against the front bumper and my heels against the concrete parking curb. She started it up, and let out the clutch with it in gear. Knocked me on my ass, tried to bend my knees backwards. Luckily the curb stopped the truck from going any farther forward. It only takes a minute of not thinking to have something happen.

Keep your head up, and way to go with the reflexes keeping the family safe.
