<P>Amen timebomb. What is not traditional about getting rid of the undependable things that slow the car down and putting something in there that will last, makes easy horsepower and is cheap to soup up? Sounds like about every one's dream at any point in time. </P> <P>Sure, you could put a fatty in there and spend 3 times the money for 1/3 the horsepower. Not to mention the cost of maintenance and price for parts. </P>
I tend to agree I do think it's wrong for the car . I like to keep it ford though or keep it chevy , I do understand though the reason behind it , a SBF will not go into some of the engine compartments where a SBC will fit fine --The ford is longer and with the chevy and a short water pump --well it will go in and you don't have to move firewalls and things like that were you would if the ford was transplanted into it . and yeah I'm not preaching a flatty , but to each his own --I don't have anything against them but I won't search for one to put it in anything . Yes I know someone will disagree with everything I wrote , but it's only my opinion and that only means something to me --
That is an awesome awesome AWESOME car! I think that car is 100% right on. I wish I had an A-roadster (Can't afford a Doooooce) that has as good a vibe as that thing does, regardless of what engine is in it!!
i like it. for 69K you could buy it and put gerbils in a wheel in the engine compartment if you wanted. bitchen ride no matter whats under the hood.
simple, reliable and fun car.........just finished a 1900-mile run from Albuquerque, NM to CA for the LA Roadster Show – no problems at all............ We ran 75+ mph all day................................... With the tall tires was getting over 25mpg. Sounds like a terrible idea to put that reilable, simple, fun powerplant in there. JUST TERRIBLE! My 35 runs fast as hell and gets a lovely 8-11 MPG! Im so Happy, I get giddy each time I pull into a Fuel station, which is all the damned time! Yup, really in Heaven over here! I can barely get to the next town and back on a 14 gallon tank. So, so happy!
i feel like i just walked into the salon.. bunch of old ladies "did you hear what engine he's using???" "mmm.. positively shameful if you ask me" "certainly now how I would have done it" "didn't he get a copy of the rules?"
Why ya gotta put down the flathead ??? Its clear you dont like people putting down the small block Chevy. Why is is that when one of us NON~SBC guys puts down a chevy, there are 50 guys to tell us that we suck and dont know shit... But then will turn right around and tell every one how fucked up flatheads are, or unreliable an early Olds is, or how stupid we are for chasin EXPENSIVE parts for our Hemis are ??? FUCKIT... its his car & all the chevy boys love him for his SBC.... BUT... how fuckin cool would that car be with a full dressed STROKED FLATHEAD ???
I would like to know the ratio of that !!! Then i'd like to know the ratio of REAL '32 fords to all the fake ones
I am with 39 Couper...run something that is reliable!!! Last summer, I bought a 40 Tudor with a 48 Merc and added Sharp Heads, Meyer intake, new 97's, etc. Spent a ton getting it "right" and I was left with a turd which damn near caught on fire twice (stuck floats) and could not get out of its own way (150hp maybe!!!). I decided to follow a buddy's advice and replicated a 1958 Corvette small block with dual quads, etc and now I have 300hp+, reliability and I do not give a flying F%#$ what anyone says. Why have 'em if you can't hop in them and GO?!?!?!?!?
My brother had a 32 tudor sedan in the early 60s. When the 327 came out we pulled that flathead in record time. Lighter and much faster. Thats the way we always did things, if it was new and cool we fought like hell to be the first!!....We was hotrodders!!!!!!!............OLDBEET
I thought I had a copy of "Rules regulating the modification of vintage Fords" around here somewhere, but it seems I've misplaced my copy. Is there someone here with a copy I might scan and print out? I know it's now out of print so this is the only way I know to get one. PM me and I'll get some money for postage off to you and I promise to return it in like condition. Frank
Shoulda put a Wankel in it. That'd show 'em. I can't afford to bid on it so I really don't care. And yet I bothered to post on it... quite curious indeed.
Exactly.... as unpopular as this may be. The first chance to upgrade to something newer and faster, it was in there. It would be cooler I guess if it was a 283 based motorinstead of a 350. Back in the day my dad pulled the full tilt injected Ardun out for a 301 SBC and never looked back.
I've got a garage full of Chevy shit I've been collecting for 40yr's, not economically feaseable to change now!
This is a pointless thread, and a waste of my time. I don't care if they dude put a mazda rotary in his roadster. Why don't you but it and make it like you want... Whoever said that there should be more project in progress pictures and less bitching about something as subjective as other people's tastes, should be made president of the HAMB.
Heres a side by side sound test. Pick whatever tickles your fancy. Flathead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udYW6bOG3LY Sbc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VNYuv5SA10
Well Josh, Looks like I need to apologizes, in fact to you all ( but just a little ), When I read my post I was a little shocked myself at the tenor of it,.... Been really red lining on stress lately, guess I should quit drinking the "Turbo Brew Coffee" as well. But this elitist thing just grinds me. why is it that every other engine that was built from 55 to 59 is acceptable other than the SBC ?,.... Nail Heads, Y-Blocks, Hemi's, Oldsmobile, Caddy's, even Stude's are acceptable. Seems some folks would rather see a SBF in there traditional Hot Rods , and they didn't come out until the early 60's. I've used a lot of the engines mentioned above in Hot Rods way before it was cool. and there are always those that tell you what they would do differently "if it were there car", no matter what you build, and what your idea of the perfect period Hot Rod is, there are always those that try to impose there ideas on you, or tell there buddy's where you screwed up. just build what you want. In the early 70's a buddy of mine and me were building a couple Deuces with Flatheads,.......... everyone thought we were nuts ! they were busy replacing there dropped axles with corvair front ends , and thinking anyone that didn't build a "Resto-Rod" or heaven forbid,... chopped a top was a idiot or a butcher,......... The fact is, we built what we wanted. Taken in 1973
I read some of this stuff and wonder--how many people on here have a running, drivable car. Not putting anybody down, but I've had LOTS of people pick apart my cars--but they don't have one of thier own. I like most anything that's got a engine in it--but like I've heard before:It's OK to build something ugly! If it's yours--then it must be great--I don't have to like it,it's not my car. I've got almost 100,000 miles on my 37 Ford--got a SBC in it--and I'll keep using em--just got done with 29 Ford roadster--and Damn--it's got one of those bastard SBC in it too. When you build your own car, you can put any GOD DAMN engine in it you want---and I think it will look great.
. We see a fair amount of That Style of 32 up here... They are the ones with the hoods closed. Yep, It's a crime. .
Haahahahaha That what I was exactly thinkin!!! Don't get me wrong..I love both of those cars..But even an early SBC with an alternator it seems wrong. An easy change..Yes..Tri Power..Getting better....But a Flathead Caddy would fucking kick ass!!! NO? How about a 49 olds? 331 Caddy??Ummmm good.. All just as reliable...If done right.
I have a friend whos Dad built his Rod in 1956 and bought all the pieces to put a 265 V-8 together then put it in his 31 Model A coupe channeled over '32 rails. Also losts of guys in the 50's pulled the Flatheads for Y-blocks,Dodge-Chry-Desoto hemis,Olds,Pont and Cad engines. I like a Ford in a Ford myself--so eather a Banger,a flathead or a Y-block for a 50's car.
I like cars... sbc, bbc, fhf, dohc, bfd... Just build the crap and drive it down the road.I myself own a 1927 ford with a flathead, and a 1932 ford with a sbc. Oh yea and a 94 subaru with a hambster on a wheel.
I got a whole swag of early 60's rod magazines off US ebay recently, and if every one of those small block 'Corvette' mills shown stuffed into cars from T buckets to 40's Fords was the genuine article, then I reckon there shouldn't be a single late 50's early 60's Corvette left on the entire planet! Let's face it people, the SBC looks like it was THE choice of most rodders back in the 60's. Cheers, Glen.
Who Gives a flying fuck. Iam a ford guy but my favorite cars a chevy . I love the fords starting system and love chevys charging system. If It was mine I would have a built flatty but If I had to drive it across the country and back and my life depended on it I would run a small chevy over a Y Block or a flatty. But I would carry some of them chezzzzy chevy rocker arms .
I think the topic here is this late 40's early 50's era correct car with a newer SBC in it... It OK to have a SBC and I agree to put it in and drive the shit out of it,, But if your going to be perfect on capturing the pieriod..It should have somthing diffrent. We know SBC were in every thing and every combo has been done...But the question is dose this SBC look wrong in this car.....Yes.
