Here's a few pics I took a couple yrs. ago when they passed through Colo. The white panel was running a Jack Roush built flatty. It seems that Roush is a big supporter of the race and still builds a lot of flatheads for the competitors. If they come through your area try to check them out, lots of neat machinery and like all hotrodders, they love to talk about their cars.

Cool cars for sure. Looks like that Mexican ’32 is running catalytic converters!

  11. My budy just finished rebuilding the riley 4 port for this 1930 Riley car for MAC'S ford out of Lockport, New York. They called hime one week before the car needed to leave for the start of the race. He gets the car to his shop. The motor has a blown head gasket and CRACKED block   . One week later a the block is repaired and a complete overhaul, shes running in the race.

That car is cool as hell, love that steering wheel. Want one of them now.

  12. The Riley was my favorite for many reasons. I love the steering wheel. What an awesome piece of machinery!

I raced in the Great Race two years, '98 and '99 in Model A speedsters. It's a really grueling schedule and it's a very competitive rally, it's no cruise night or poker run. I'd love to do it again.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. It looks to me like they must have relaxed the rules somewhat from when we raced. There's a year of manufacture tech inspection at the beginning since the race is handicapped in favor of the older cars. They were very picky about what could and couldn't be on a car. One of our speedsters was a '28 but we had to run as a '29 because we had a '29 parking brake handle. I see some rather modern looking parts on a few of those cars.

  14. Is that a Caddy flathead in that 32. It sure looks like one. You can't mistake the motor mounts and exhaust amnifolds out the top of the motor. The heads are throwing me off a little , they look like flat plate rether than cast heads with cooling.

I was at Jacks place for a party a couple of weeks ago and there were probably a dozen Great Races cars there including his daughters who I hear is a regular participant in the race.

One of these days I'd love to do it in Big Olds....I just need me a sponsor.:D

Thanks for the pics. It is really neat to see those cars and how they are built to run. They have come thru town twice in the past 10 years, lucky us!

I wonder how much it costs and how long it takes. I'd like to do that race one day. I saw it (the end) in Monterey Bay CA a few years back. Really neat machines.

If I remember correctly from talking to a racer one time.....
$5,000 to enter and 10 days on the road.
Megan and I would need another $5000 in fuel, lodging, and food expenses.:D

    Any takers:rolleyes:

I've got some friends who have run it a couple of times. They are husband and wife. He drives and she navigates. She says one of the best parts is that whan they are running, he has to do EXACTLY what she says the whole time!

Actually, I believe the color pictures on that page are also a replica, built by Buck Boudeman maybe 15 years ago. The one in the Great Race looks very lumpy by comparison.

  25. Is a Caddilac flathead and complete drivetrain, perfectly executed.
    We were going to run my Plymouth until we found out the entry fees;
    $2500 southeast "fun" run
    $3500 southeast competitive run
    $10,000 entire event
does not cover anything but entry fees.
    It's a 14 day race I believe.

Last year I took my son, Riley Morgan (ex-wife never caught on to why I suggested this first and middle name for him...), to the race when it came through St. Louis. Looks like they're taking a different route this year...we were hoping to catch it again. You're right-damn good time!!

  28. I spoke to the guy who owned it and he didn't say whether or not they were custom made but he seems to be the type that would share with you that they were.
Buick straight 8, unbelievable machine work. This guy owns a machine shop in Orange County.

Forget that! Unless there was some serious sponsorship going on.
