Hey there every one, Thought id share my proudest moment of all time with every one here on this forum. I was lucky enough to get to meet this hero of mine a few months ago when NZ's Scroungers and other friends flew him over. He is officially my idol and my main inspiration for building my custom. So he was bought over to my freinds workshop at the time and looked over my car, he had some great comments about the lines of my sled and the roof chop and some advice for my Grill and he also notice the spinner window wasnt sitting right so he hammered away and got it just right.
Well Congratulations, how lucky you are. Thats what dreams are made of sometimes we forget how fortunate we are to have Gene and many other legends right here in our own back yard (practicaly) we get to see them many times a yr. You should be proud, love the Leadsled!!!! Keep us updated on the progress
There's not many legends that still produce the volume of work Gene does. It's impressive to be a legend. It's even moreso to still be hands-on. Thirty years down the road, each and every one of us will look back and feel like idiots for not getting a second mortgage, and hiring Gene to do a car.
Well said, Kirk! I have talked with Gene for quite a few years now in the swap meet of the LA Roadster Show.....have seen him race *The Thing* out at Elmo....always gracious and conversational..... He could demand a Celebrity Booth and just sit there and sign autographs and suck up the adulation, but he is a humble guy who rolls in the swap meet with his unassuming panel van and sets up just like any other *regular guy* to sell his parts and posters, etc. I love the guy and respect him for the way he chooses to conduct himself.......just one of the really true living legends in this world! Brucie
If ever you hear that he is at a swap, race, etc near take the time to go see him. He is one of the biggest legends we still have around, who is still hard at work. Thanks Gene!!
I took my then 11-yr-old son to the Starbird show in Tulsa in '99 and Mr. Winfield was there, with a booth selling various items. I introduced myself and my son, and asked if I could take a picture of David with Gene. He not only obliged, but took my son into his booth and talked cars with him for several minutes while I snapped photos. Very gracious man to give a ten-year-old kid that kind of attention.
Hey.. Yep.. Gene is what we call "good people" up here. I met him about 10 yrs ago and we talked for a long time. Saw him each year after that. Last year got to park my hot rod next to his booth at an event. He had me run'n the booth for a bit while he did an errand. Kinda made my day... Pontiac Slim
He he he we dont talk funny, every one else talks funny, sorry i mean rear window out of a 51 Ford Sedan, there you go does that make sense
Gene Winfield amd his custom Caddy, "Maybelline"(and many other famour customs), will be at the Rock N Rods custom show in Bloomington, Illinois on July 21-22... http://www.rocknrodson66.com
the guy still races at el mirage, amazing... lots of old timers on the dirt and salt. id be the luckiest guy on the planet to be 80yrs old and still racing.
A spinner in Kiwi speak is a 49-50 Ford - the name comes from the grille centre that looks like it should have a propeller mounted on it. And following on, '51 Ford is a twin-spinner. So HRG is talking about the rear window that is out of a 49/50 Ford. Cool pics HRG !!
Hey thanks for that Simon, Hope fully your down at the Hotrod Club tonight for a catch up and a beer, Cheers
I used to work for Gene and He is one hell of a great guy, He is as real as they get, the way He is at shows is no act that's the way He is every day. Gene is the reason I can't just build a simple car and have to kustom build'em instead. Oh and Gene will out live Us all ( I hope). Von Doc
Its nice to see how much people still appreciate good talent and history. Gene is a great guy and always has been. At 80 years young he has more energy than 90% of the people on this board and doesn't look like he's going to slow down for a very long time.....My hats off to you Gene........Lucky
